This is Cors Y Gedol, situated in the old parish of Llanddwywe, the name Cors y Gedol comes from the name of the 16th century manor house which is close to the site. But in some old books, we found references to it being called Arthur's Quoit or Coetan Arthur, a name that has been given to an incredible number of these monuments.
Wales is the home to a lot of Arthurian tales, and one theory is that the name is derived from the fifth century Welsh word 'Art' which means 'bear' and ‘ur’ meaning 'man', therefore Artur is said to literally mean bear-man. The bear influence for the name of king Arthur is supported by late Latin writings which give the name Arturus, which combines the Welsh for bear - art with its Latin counterpart - ursus.
