The bend in the wings was due to ground clearance issues with the big propeller needed for the engine. Then the mains were able to be shortened to fold into the wings. The extra performance in handling due to the bent wings was more or less an accidental benefit.

So many WWII pilots reported very poor visibility over the nose during taxi and flare to landing. I wonder how the pilot perspective is on this!
@ceebee2 Жыл бұрын
It’s a tailwheel so probably not great, but that’s why taildraggers have to weave side to side when taxiing so the pilot can see in front of them. A wheel-landing, where the throttle is kept open just enough for the plane to stay on the front two wheels until it slows enough to drop back onto the tail wheel, usually negates the landing visual issue.

I wouldn't call it so much a Corsair as I would say it's a gull wing ultralight. Nice aircraft. I like that so many ultralights are looking more like aircraft than just a powered sheet with tent poles. Neat and I believe you could actually do a full solid body sleek fast plane within 115kg but it's a bit of an artificial limit to chase because part 103 only allows 55knot level speed and requires 24knot stall. Plus it requires no training so how far do you want to push that. But I'm all for pushing how efficient a plane you can make. GA has been quite complacent ever since the earth was cursed by the existence of Cessna :) funny twist is you can have retractable landing gear on a 103. And I believe it can have a jet engine too, even two. And because a jet engine of fitting power can be very light, it's organic to the category. You could imagine a part 103, speed limited to 55knots yet actually capable of 500km/h cruise at FL400 :)
@DanFrederiksen4 жыл бұрын
and it seems part 103 has no MTOW limit. Maybe it has a 100kg cargo capacity and that cargo happened to be a fuel canister :) although an ultralight might go far on 5 gallons.

with a fuel limit of 5 gal and speed restrictions under FAR103 it ain't going very far/fast anyway. But yeah, seeing the aircraft complete minus control surface skin is odd. But it does show off the frame construction well enough.

Flawed LOGIC Alert!!! the Motivations for the design of the f4u were SPECIFIC to the time and to the components available. there is no reason to think that as an ultralight, this design is a good idea or safe to bet one's life on. there is a shortage of information, here. including, no flight video. googletranslate en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_F4U_Corsair
@rowanwills96984 жыл бұрын
The reasoning for the wings on the F4U was to allow it to run a larger prop to better make use of the more powerful engines without needing to make the landing gear needlessly long to compensate. I see no reason why this logic should not be applied to an ultralight as well thereby making the mandatorily fixed gear protrude less for lower drag and also making them lighter as well. To top it off the F4U was a well liked and popular aircraft so why not make your product in its likeness whilst taking advantage of its design features.

Nose is too long. Better get Verner 5, 7 or 9 cylinder and shorten the nose, move pilot little back. Steeper front windshield. Bigger and beefier wheels. Larger vertical stabilizer. Also fabric could have less wrinkles. Otherwise will be awesome american WWII F4U! Just make wings swing up and fit it all to a trailer named USS Wolverine.

Mate...this aircraft was designed and engineered to comply with Part 103 in multiple countries. Your suggested design changes would make the aircraft substantially heavier and it wouldn't comply with Part 103. Do you not understand that?
