Corsair Virtuoso XT review and unboxing goodness

This is a review of the ‪@corsair‬ Virtuoso XT, a flagship gaming headset from Corsair that's an upgrade from the original Virtuoso ( • Corsair Virtuoso Revie... ) with some nice new features that includes a broadcast quality microphone and Bluetooth with Qualcomm aptX HD for hi-res audio via your phone too.
Note I used the headset's mic for the voice over of this video.

It has wired USB-C connectivity, Bluetooth® with Qualcomm® aptX™ HD, SlipStream wireless connection and 3.5mm too. It's designed to work with PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, but is also compatible with Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and
mobile too.
The highlight is definitely the dual-connectivity options. You can connect both Bluetooth and Wireless at the same time and then adjust volumes independently. This means you can listen to music on your phone at one volume and game audio via SlipStream wireless at a different level. Plug in the 3.5mm and you can adjust that via a control on the cable as well.
This headset has spatial surround sound via Dolby Atmos when you use it on PC. The licence for that is included with the headset, you just need to download Dolby Access:

The best sound for the Virtuoso XT comes when plugged into a gaming PC. Go into Windows sound settings and set audio to 96Khz/24-bit audio for the best quality sound.
However, sadly for me the comfort just isn't there and it's sorely lacking in padding and depth, making it hurt my ears after a short period. It's lighweight and nicely designed both aesthetically and technologically but just doesn't stand up against the A50 for comfort.

A month before the pandemic I purchased the original virtuoso headset and found that it was terribly uncomfortable as well and my ears would be very sore after using it, but over time with the wear and tear on the headset you get used to it and the discomfort goes away so I expect the same from these. Im using the same headset while watching this video. I dont really play video games as much anymore but the sound quality isnt as bad as everyone says it is, plus the mic is fine for streaming/content creating. You get an all in one package for just under $300 so good imo. Probably gonna purchase these so I can have the ability to play audio from my phone while im editing on pc, that’s going to be super helpful. The premium price tag is justified

I actually enjoy this headset. Though admittedly I had to swap the ear pads which made it good for me. Though i got it at a very big discount. So for the price I paid (less than half) it was super worth it. I did note some people saying the audio quality was bad, but maybe I got a good pair? A few EQ adjustments and it was allstar. @@Seventh_Son I just got them off amazon, you can basically plug in corsair virtuoso XT into the search engine and find a selection of them. They have different materials and types. I grabbed a material similar to steel series because its really hot where I live so pleather is muggy.

Just a heads up to anyone considering these - the sidetone by default is almost non-existent, and you need iCUE installed to get it working reasonably. It's a widespread issue and Corsair Support are not doing anything about it. (They just write back and say "install iCUE" - which doesn't work if you want to use them with a phone, Linux machine, or a company machine where you can't install software.)

I get the gripe, but it's marketed as a gaming headset, not sure it not working on a phone, Linux machine, or company machine are viable arguments lol. Unless you game on your company machine; which I've admittedly done, but most people can't/don't (if you don't have admin rights to install iCue I doubt you are installing games either).

Purchase Dekoni Elite hybrids, have to peel off the original earpds from the ear pad frame, then 0ut on the dekoni Elite hybrid, changes the headset completely

@the provoked prawn I’ve recently purchased this headset for PS5 and I’m very happy with it. Just one question however. If the microphone connect to the ps5 via the wireless dongle I have to set the headset onto the wireless switch. Does this mean that I can’t get the best audio from either the 3.5 or usb cable option if I want to play online and chat to friend with the mic turned on? Sorry if this sounds stupid this headset is kinda confusing and the user manual isn’t that informative. Many thanks in advanced

What about the cushioning on the headband? I've previously owned an Audio Technica M40X but that really hurt my head because there's barely any cushioning on top. Did they improve this in the XT version?

Is the 3.5mm jack’s mute switch the only way to mute it when your using that as your primary connection? Can you use the mic’s mute button when powered off in other words?

Awesome review, very detailed as usual. I have the original Virtuoso and use dts:X for spatial audio that came with my ROG motherboard for free. I have the trial of Dolby ATMOS and this does sound good in it. Is the difference between the old and new version regarding the spatial audio side is mine uses the 7.1 option in icue and the new one uses Dolby ATMOS. Though hardware wise they are identical in that sense so did Corsair just prefer users to use ATMOS on the new one because it’s a better technology or have they actually changed something in the hardware that makes it require ATMOS. Tricky Q I know but basically if the original and the XT both use ATMOS would the XT sound better or would they be identical. Just want to know if I should buy the ATMOS app or stick to dts as the 7.1 icue setting is a bit rubbish.

I'm curious here. I just got these and alot of reviewers recommend using the Dolby app. But atleast on my pc if you use the Dolby app you can't run the 96000hz setting. Only when using the corsair app is the 96000hz allowed. Jumping from app to app the corsair seems to sound alot better especially with the 96000hz on

No difference really. The main changes are Bluetooth and Dolby Atmos.

it's a real shame that they didn't address the biggest concern: ears touching the speakers. Also, the regular version with the small mic sounded so much better. It's a shame they didn't include that mic.

I think the ears touching is really an individual issue. Some have that problem while others don't. Not everyone has that issue.

From other reviewers I've learnt that they actually have tried to address the issue. The have changed the headband itself so it is much wider than the previous model which means there is less clamping force and so less pressure on the ears. They have also increased the padding on the headband (not the earcups) to reduce the weight on the ears too. Its something, but the issue here seems to be with the depth of the cups. Shame really.

I currently own LG G Pro X and I find them somewhat uncomfortable. The top and bottom of my ears are JUST inside the cups and they don't seem to touch anything, but the front and back of the pads are too narrow because of the more oval shape of them and so the back of my ear is slightly being squashed down onto my head. Are the Virtuosos going to be more comfortable?

@@TheProvokedPrawn hey, I thought I'll give an update: I decided to buy these and I'm super happy, they definitely are more comfortable for my head/ears. I can feel them slightly touching my ears etc but nothing too bad, I'd compare them to the old Razer Kraken 7.1 V2 although I feel like the padding on Krakens was better than on Virtuosos. Also I remember you mentioned creaking in either this video or the bts one. I can definitely hear it when you squeeze the ear cups, especially the right one

I dunno about that but I did a by the book install, tried with iCue, with Dolby Access ( which did manage to improve them ) , tweaked the IQ to make it a bit less bad but at the end of the day the sound was still bad. I have 15$ Sony earbuds that sound vastly better. Not acceptable for a 300$ headset. Returning it.

Yeah it’s same one from what I’ve read, I have the SE (with firmware update) and it sounds the same. If you didn’t update the firmware the SE will sound much worse, so update that if your having mic issues

i personally have the a50. I've been looking around for new headset because my job doesn't have the xt version of this headset and now I'm thinking about the arctis pro wireless. I need the wireless capability but I also need to hear people around me. I feel like the a50 doesn't have the same audio positioning as my old corsair void pros wireless. It could be me but I feel like a "player's dot", the area I hear and could pinpoint where a player is, is a lot larger to the point where i don't know if someone is at my 6 vs 7 or my 5 vs 4. With my void elites I could pin point those differences and adjust accordingly. I'm going to pick up arctis pro wireless tomorrow and hopefully i can give you an update but atm i cannot recommend the a50 for the price that it is. There are pros and cons to everything and this is the first time i have ever felt i genuinely disappointed about a headset. Perhaps that is may work for you but atm I cannot recommend them.

I read that the Penrose is basically the Mobius without the head tracking tech (and the HyperX Cloud Orbit S is basically the Mobius without wireless). Is 3D head tracking good for gaming? Unfortunately it is a pain in the *** to find the Penrose in my country, so I am down to Virtuoso XT and Cloud Orbit S. I can get the Virtuoso Xt for 209 euro, and then Cloud Orbit S for around 310 euro. I am curious whether that 100 euro difference is worth it for the headtracking tech. I just want amazing sound quality. Dont care about mic. Thanks

I bought this headset and there is one big problem with it, when you turn off dolby atmos, windows recognize 8 audio channels, but on corsair icue you can´t change between stereo and surround, so the audio sucks, but if you turn on dolby atmos, windows only recognize 2 channels and dolby atmos try to put some surround there, so the audio sucks anyway, im really disappointed with these headsets, i have the virtuoso SE and bought this one thinking that will be some improvement but the audio is just terrible for gaming. I play competitive Apex Legends and with this headset i literally can´t tell if the enemy is in front or behind me, top or bellow, im using the virtuoso SE again cause this one is going to refund.

If you like to monitor your voice when talking, don't get these. Sidetone is non-existent. You almost have to put the mic in your mouth to hear yourself... and that's after you boost it to max level in the software. Returned these on the same day and went back to my Arctis Wirless Pro (because the sidetone is nice and loud).

Cmon Corsair this is the 2nd time that there is no chatmix on the Virtuoso, not to mention that the sound quality isn’t better than the Astro A20s, I have both the SE & now the XTs a chance, the sound stage is just flat awful, and from what friends tell me via discord & PlayStation party chat, the mic is just horrible, this is just not worth the 270$ asking price, not even the 200$ asking price for the SE, and I still refuse to put down my Astro A50s, heck I even returned these to buy another pair of A50s (One pair of A50s for PC, and the new pair for PS5) im not really looking to replace my A50s but I’m looking for a good solid contender, the Arctic Pro Wireless are very nice, but it’s something about the A50s that I can’t seem to let them go 🤔

I dont know why most youtubers are giving this Virtuoso line of headset good reviews, it has an horrible sound profile, which defeats its purpose as a multi use headset, you need to dabble the software EQ to dial a good sound, which is only for PC, because if you use bluetooth or 3.5 you are stuck with the horrible, unbalanced and flat sound profile, all of that for $270. There are $50 and $60 headsets that sounds a thousand times better than this one.

You can't fix those with EQ, they just sound bad. When some frequencies play, I lose some others, like it interferes with itself. I listened to songs I know very well and some details that should be there are just lost in audio mud. No matter what settings or EQ I used, these did not work for me.

@@TheProvokedPrawn I blame the icue software...they definitely need to overhaul it...I noticed the gpu was warming up more than normal during gaming and only one fan was spinning. Msi afterburner was locked at 40%

For 280€ it was the worst headset i got in Years... I also can give you photos, my usb dongle come brokened! The RGB come soo Weak that one weak later, on Corsair they check that the product had factory problems, i ask for a refund! The pads have the same size of the previous SE, they are hot and unconfortable was fuck! The range for 30 meters is soo weak, doesnt work fine to me... Im using the Hyper X Cloud II Wireles and they are fantastic!!!!! For only 155€

Yeah, I had one and sent it back the next day. My $80 MDR-7506 sound leagues better

Agreed, I was terribly disappointed, I was disappointed with the Virtuoso SE, waited and gave these a chance, I see nothing has changed other than Corsair adding Bluetooth to them and hiking the price tag 🤦🏾‍♂️ long live my Astro A50s
