Make Your Own Leather Skiving Knife Sheaths
Skiving knives are an important tool in your leather crafting toolbox, but they're also one of the sharpest! It's a great idea to make some nice leather sheaths for your skiving knives to protect both the blades and yourself from catching an edge accidentally. We've made up a full free set of patterns for the 3 different size skiving knives our sponsor Weaver Leather offers, and in this video we go through making both a simple slip sheath and a sheath with a snap closure.

Funny, this was my very second project last week! I improvised it, it's less refined and without the button, I just wanted to get my nads dirty on something simple and I'm happy I did. I learned a lot from your videos and have a couple of your patterns ready for making. This weekend I plan on making the flap card wallet! Thanks for the informative videos.

I made my sheath after watching your skiving knife video. I did a couple of things differently than seen here. I designed mine with the strap already attached to the back piece, so the strap and the back are one piece of leather. I also put a liner in mine to cover the snap so I wouldn't run into the snap with my blade. Just to be fancy I dyed the welt piece blue, so my sheath has a cool navy stripe running down the center and blue stitching cause I love the color blue with the natural veg tanned. The only thing that I did completely different was stab the ever loving sh*t out of myself with an awl because I couldn't get the punches to go all the way through the leather. I marked the stitches with the punches but had to use the awl to go through all of the layers of leather... Keep those fingers out of the way of the awl's path..

@@MrFreeGman you are answering to a year old comment. It's not about the easiness of the project, it's about new people to the hobby looking for resources. You say you are gonna provide something, least you can do is be true to your word, be it a rectangle or a circle, some people may not have the 3d spacial awareness to come up with the shape. Again. Not about how easy it is, but rather saying you'll do something and then not doing it

Interesting approach skiving the welt at the opening, I've never thought of that. Do you think that would work well on a large knife sheath? I make chef knife sheaths for a knifemaker friend (usually 2-3mm thick blades and I aim for 75% of that as my welt thickness). Skiving it at the end might give it a little extra "grip" on the blade, but maybe too tight sliding in. I'd be interested to try it but would be a risky one given the time that goes into a large sheath. Cheers.

I’ve watched a lot of videos of leather crafters and everyone seems to waste a lot of material. For example, in this project, why didn’t you make that first “rough” cut with a straight edge and use that straight edge as one of the sides of your pattern? Although it only saves about 1/4” or so, those waste cuts add up, and the material isn’t cheap. Is there a reason?

First off, I just started leather crafting and your channel has been a huge inspiration to me, so thank you. I'm making a larger modified version of this sheath for a nikiri chef knife out of 4.5oz - 5.5oz veg tan. I'm noticing that my stitching holes are nice and tidy on the side I'm punching through, but they meander all over the place on the back side. Also, I'm having a really hard time extricating my stitching chisel from the 3 layers of leather I'm punching through. Do you have any insight?
@lbdeuce
@lbdeuce Жыл бұрын
conor im its been a year since you wrote this and were ignored. youve probably found a solution but i will share mine since as far as i know its original. melt some carnuba wax on your stitching chisels and buff off the excess. carnuba is a uniquely hard and durable wax that creates a shell around the material that its applied too. ive found it to be extremely effective in aiding the extrication of chisels and it doesnt need to be reapplied that often. good lick dog.

I followed along and made my own skiving knife sheath...only for my knife to cut through one of the faces because I didn't put it in _perfectly_ straight. Is it normal to have to be that careful about the precise angle of the blade as the sheath goes on? If not, is there a mistake I may have made?
