Did the Maura in the simulation takes over the body of the real Maura (presumed in spaceship)? Because she it looked surprised. I think this spaceship is also a simulation & True reality will be revealed in the final episode of the series.

Ref Dark … The cigarette vending machines at bus stops were spot-on. The sadism of the 50s (post war reaction) was spot-on. The inaction of the people- breathtaking. The joke about the elephant was the only time that Germans cracked the surface on humor, the rest of the series was too deadpan - although hey for me it’s clear why Germans aren’t funny (I’m Dutch-Jewish). The absolutely accent-less German was not believable. Nobody locking their doors was not believable. The police fArce in winden wasn’t believable. Apparently no time machines work between 1921 and 1953. Hmmmm, I wonder why.

In my opinion they were astronauts headed to explore the universe. Due to the long journey, they were put to sleep and hooked up to a simulator to pass time. She accidentally woke up, so now she's stuck awake in a spaceship. There's actually an old Twilight Zone episode with the same concept.

I think laura did not wake up to reality but rather to another simulation! As you mentioned. Read these lines from episode 8 when Mr. Singleton is telling Elliot a memory of his daughter: One evening she came to me and said, "If it's true what Plato argues, then how do we know if anything is real?" How do we know that the actual reality isn't outside the life we're living?" It was a mighty big thought for a girl her age. I looked at her and asked her, "Isn't that what God is? The creator of our reality?" She thought about it for a moment. And then she answered, "But then it's the world God is living in that's real and we are just his doll's house. And then again, who created God? Doesn't it go on endlessly?"

There is one thing that bugs me, which is why the technology they have in the modern era looks very much like its a more advanced version of the 1970s or early 1980s tech. Like someone grabbed the tvs, computers and appliances of 1978 and blended them with the tech of the 2020s. Yet its also more advanced than our current level of technology by a few decades, due to the virtual world being so realistic. It's possible we may find out this ship is a seed ship sent from earth during the Cold War with 2000 people from NATO nations and allied nations like Japan, to ensure human survival elsewhere if earth was destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. So perhaps, it's an ark from our past. One which used advanced experimental government technology to create this virtual world they are put in. The ship is possibly heading to alpha centauri to seed a suspected earth like planet there with a human population. Maura and her husband perhaps the British IT experts who built the simulation. This would mean that the ship is 120 years in space and nearing its final destination. Time would probably move slower in the simulation to allow for the long journey to feel short. The stasis they are in whilst plugged in halting or slowing aging dramatically. Mauras brother may well be mentally ill and he was originally in an institution back on earth. But he was brought being her family. Perhaps he has broken out and has been controlling what was initially a calm peaceful simulation for the 2000 passengers on board, into his own little experiment. He could be awake for years or decades (possibly no longer his sisters age physically having left the simulation and could look old) but for Maura and others in the simulation this may only he months in the form of dozens of repeated prometheus simulations. Think about it, why would you choose 1899 as a simulation if everyone is convinced they are also in 1899? Why put the racial minorities, gay passengers and women through a simulation that sees them as second class when they come from a more equal time? This is her brother hijacking the system. Inside some escaped his control at the start, including Mauras father, her son (who I'm guessing is a digital copy, just code not a physical person as his body is dead) and some of the crew. They have found a way to interfer with his simulations but are trapped in it just like those who don't know they are in his simulation. They may be aware they are living in the 21st century but are stuck in this 19th century nightmare. Maura having designed the system, may well have an escape key built in that allows for all to wake up instantly like she did, that's what her father wants. Without it they are under the control of her brother in the real world. Only her backdoor escape code can free them, unless she herself can stop him outside the simulation. But so far I'm thinking a big twist will be this is a ship launched by NATO in the 70s or something, using experimental computer technology, carrying 2000 passengers to Alpha Centauri to ensure the survival of modern democratic society in the event mankind went extinct during the Cold War on earth. A back up for mankind. Hence the technology looks late 20th Century at times but has modern elements like touchscreens and 3D mapping or coding which was all in early design phases back then, but secret projects could have even decades ahead in funded by anti USSR governments like the US, Japan and UK.

I still feel like so many occurrences are unexplained by the fact it's a simulation, and don't make sense retrospectively. For example: - Why does Elliot remain mute for the majority of the show, and only begin to speak towards the end? - Who sends the "Sink Ship" orders, and how do the crew members and passengers on the Kerberos know about the missing Prometheus ship if these are all just loops? - If the First Mate knows it's all a simulation and is working for Henry the entire time, whose purpose is find the key that Maura has hidden, why does he spent so much of the series "in character" (as it were) as the First Mate, and not more time trying to find the key? This only really becomes his focus in the final episode. - Why do some characters in the simulation (Henry, First Mate, Daniel, Elliot) know about the looped nature of their reality and the fact its a simulation, while the others (first class passengers) do not, and are unable to comprehend what's going on when this is revealed to them? And Why does being injected in the simulation wipe Maura's memory when it's just a simulation? You don't actually die when you're in the simulation, so how can you be made to forget if the real "you" on the outside isn't having anything done to their brain chemistry? - Why is there is "physical" archive of all the ships if it's just a looped event? - If Maura and Daniel just wanted to create a "home away from home" in the form of the simulation, why was it created as an expedition with a storyline, and one where all the characters die each time?| - Why was Elliot originally found on board the Prometheus, and why, if this was a previous version of the simulated journey, does it exist in the same environment as the Kerberos? - Why is Henry observing everything from a monitoring station inside the simulation, and not part of the loop? I hope all of this will be addressed in Season 2, but my suspicion is that most of these odd elements were just there initially as red herrings to keep the audience guessing, rather than part of a consistent and coherent narrative which make sense even when examined in retrospect.

If it’s anything like Dark the previous show they made they will explain these things, though some I feel are already answered. He stays mute because Maura’s dad is watching and listening and doesn’t want to convey information to him, there were probably past iterations of the loop where he tried to talk and it didn’t work out. The sink ship orders were sent by Maura’s dad or maybe brother, and the passengers have implanted memories about the Prometheus the same way they do about their backstories. Since they really live in 2099 those flashbacks can’t be what really happened to them, though they might be similar. As for the first mate, it’s not as if we see his every move, he very well could have been and probably was searching off screen when he could. The people like Daniel, Elliot, and Maura’s dad that are exceptions know about the outside world and aren’t reset each loop. I feel like there is a good reason for that we just don’t know yet. As for the syringe, just because it’s an object in the simulation I don’t see why that leads you to believe it can’t have any real effects on the actual person. Sure it’s not real medicine or whatever, it’s more like technology being manifested in the simulation. The same way Daniel manipulates the boat from that control panel. The physical archive just looks cool visually and though it seems to serve no practical purpose in world I don’t think it’s a stretch that they would create something like that. About the dark storyline of the simulation, that is something they will definitely explain further, but as of now I think that was all her brothers doing after he took over when she went in the simulation. I think every single ship with passengers looped in the simulation is the Kerberos and the Prometheus never had any real ones, it was just set up to look like that for the experiment. I also assume that the inside of the cupboard is Elliot’s starting place in the simulation though he seems to keep his memories of previous loops. I have no idea about her dad watching the simulation, maybe it was initially done to coax him into going into the simulation. Like her brother said “watch over these guys as part of the experiment” and just trapped him inside. You are right to an extent though, some of these things were done create mystery and as red herrings, but it’s not like they have no logical reasoning for happening the way they did at all.

My interpretation... the passengers are all on an exploration ship thru space(pretty much revealed to us in the final scene) and judging by the lightyears they're expecting to travel, need to be placed in deep sleep to make it through the trip. And to successfully achieve such a prolonged stasis, the mind has to remain continuously stimulated, so as to not permanently shut down(basically tricked into thinking it's still fully active), hence simulations... so, you plug every passenger into basically a man in which you can run them thru a continuous simulation that provides the necessary stimulus to keep their minds from shutting down until they reach their target destination. And if you consider the simulations from a programming standpoint, everything within the simulations is simply manifestations of code written(i.e. the archive of all the previous ships is just a physical representation of data storage). So, it can be possible to "wake up" within the simulations, becoming aware of the mainframe and still remain linked, therefore able to modify, scrub, write code from within. That would explain Henry, Daniel, Elliot, etc. being "awake" within the simulations. It's also why all the passengers seem to be migrants on a ship traveling to America in 1899... the shared simulation is a manifestation of their actual reality... an illusion created to keep them engaged while in deep sleep, rooted enough in their core desires/motivations/memories/conflicts to sell the simulation as real. Otherwise, it'd be rejected by the mind. As for the reason for the space exploration... Henry recounts the story of when Maura, as a child, supposed that reality is out wherein "God" lies, and if so, what lies outside of that... so this trip is an exploration/settler mission led by Maura(whose driving objective is to answer that question), the passengers are volunteers(whose objective is looking for a better life)... but the mission seems to have been hijacked by her brother?

I enjoyed the show very much, but there were a lot of seemingly illogical things that happened in the show. What was the purpose of presumably Daniel killing of people? Was the purpose just to provoke the mutiny? How about when he first tampered with the "ship computer" and the subsequent mass hypnosis where almost everyone went overboard? What was that all about? Was it just to confuse his enemies or was it an attempt to make Maura realize that they're not in the real world? I don't understand the motivation behind most of his actions. :D

The upside down triangle is the elemental symbol for ‘Earth’ my assumption would be it has something to do with the 2099 reality maybe have to do with migrating from or saving Earth? I also feel the use of Prometheus must be very relevant to use twice, the closest relevance I can tell is that Prometheus was the God that gave the gift of divination to humanity. With all the talk of who is the creator and god. The idea of divination and trying to contact an higher being or the next level of simulation up seems like a possible link. As young Maura says if god created us who created god. Side note too I think the room numbers may be possible passnger/patient numbers. With Maura being 1011. With the amount of crew/passengers being identical on both Kerberos and Prometheus it seems like none on the boat were just simulations/Npc’s. Even the Danish bunk beds had numbers which seemed like an odd detail to highlight. Let me know what you think, loved the series!! ❤

Another quick thought, I have a feeling the relevance of the hypnosis clock was to show how they can force people to do what they want, maybe the usual use case is to get people to use the bunkers under their bed and relive nightmares. It would explain how they have the same nightmares over and over and why all the main cast had the rooms that didn’t otherwise get any screen time of the actual trapdoor. This might be a reach though.

I liked the series, thought it borrowed heavily from other shows that have already been done, but being a history wonk, I had a couple of major problems with them calling it "1899" - "1909" would've been much more historically correct. The ships are models of the Cunard liner "Mauretania" which first sailed in 1907. There was only one four-stack ocean liner in the world in 1899, the "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse" which was very different looking from the "Prometheus" and the "Keboros". Why did none of the ship's crew, especially the officers, have on period-correct uniforms? It's an ocean liner - fine jackets, gold bullion stripes on the sleeves, and visor caps were worn all the time. The ship seems to have an amazingly small number of crewmen and passengers - if there are 1,500 people aboard, we only see the same 25 over and over again. The third class quarters weren't correct for any ocean liners of that period, the wardrobe for the passengers was a mixed bag of three decades worth of fashion, and if it was supposed to be a simulation set in a particular year on a particular ship, they got just about all the details about what was and wasn't historically accurate for an ocean liner in 1899 dead wrong. Interesting show, just showed a remarkable lack of attention to major details.

This is the most satisfying show I've seen in years. Kept me guessing right until the end. I was riveted and I can say that about almost nothing else from the last few years. Dark is a masterpiece and so is 1899. At this point I want to know more about why they are all trying to forget what they've been through. It feels like they all had some kind of collective trauma and it would make sense for their consciousness to need a place to reside during a long space voyage so they can not take up resources while in suspended animation. I don't think anyone can guess exactly what their mission is, but the simulation aspect can go in so many directions at this point.

As a super fan of Dark I didn't think 1899 could live up to the first show but WOW! They really blew me away. While I do LOVE the concept of 1899, I have to be honest in saying there are more than a handful of scenes that really make no sense to me. What was the purpose of the mystery of the simulation? Why would the simulation be filled with so much conflict. What was the point of the little blonde girl dying first? Was Jerome part of the future ship? What role was Maura's father participating in? Was he really aboard the space vessel or just part of the simulation? I don't mind plot holes but some of these questions are gaping. lol Overall I loved the first season but there are some massive questions that I'm not sure actually have answers.

I’m new to this collaboration (haven’t watched ‘Dark’), and felt slightly disappointed after watching season 1. At the risk of sharing a potentially unpopular opinion (no offence intended), I found the storyline to be poorly thought through and often wandered in its own self-indulgence. I think perhaps the over-use of simulation potentially aids in disengaging it’s viewer, and indeed sabotages it’s own plot credibility. A lot of the symbolism felt cliched, which is a shame because the actors seemed to be working really hard to counteract this. I can’t help but compare it to the likes of Lynch and Kubrick that execute confusion and hidden meaning so deftly, after watching this.

Sorry to copy, but I just LOVE what I read here: Friese and bo Odar have ideas for two more seasons, with increased complexity compared to season 1.[2] The planned three-season structure stems from Friese's and bo Odar's film background, where films have three acts.[7] The first season served to establish the theme and characters and pose big questions.[7] If ordered by Netflix, the second season would explain the symbology of the triangles, and Maura's brother would be an important character.[7] bo Odar described this second act as "all about the fun and games, where you play with the theme, and maybe get a little bit more megalomaniacal and crazy, and then resolve it in the third season into a hopefully satisfying resolution."[7] SOOOOO HYPED for the next seasons, no question Netflix ordering them ! 🎉🎉😂

It's super obvious that they're is cryosleep on a spaceship if you're paying attention this is a sci-fi series. Even named the ship Prometheus.

The ending certainly fooled me. Reminded me of an episode of SG Atlantis where they showed crew in suspended animation and linked to each other where they could dream in parallel. Just noticed the picture above the passengers at 4:23, weird, looks like a bunch of naked guys.

Could be an excellent pure horror, the setting was amazing first few episodes. Eventually it was not the type of series i expected, but good nevertheless

The last shot we see Maura's eye the triangle 🔻 so she is in another simulation. And the real ship or a simulation? This 1899 series is amazing

I love it too because it's a twisty sci-fi mystery box and I couldn't predict where it was going. Loved the ending. Honestly it doesn't need a second season.

A "social experiment" meant to enrich a group of travellers who are on their way to find or reach their creator/home(perhaps the last humans) with rationality to make tough moral choices(sink the ship) in still tougher and potentially reality-breaking situations. Space simulation next season if the creator/home is already found.

According to me this movie will have 3 seasons. 1899 -> the past, simulation 2099-> the future, simulation 2035 / 40-> where they will really wake up to present

I’m confused…. When the ship archives: I thought the characters reset and had another chance to get out. So why are those few characters still sat on the ship in archive in the end? 🤔
@jonfreeman9682
@jonfreeman9682 Жыл бұрын
They were about to be reset. After the captain swims to join the others they tried to escape the ship but you see the charcoal dendrites spreading and dissolving the ship which is the resetting in progress. They will die and be reborn in a new simulation and the ship will become part of the ship archive graveyard kinda like data fragments stored in disk storage sectors where data recovery specialists can sometimes undelete and recover bits of destroyed files.

@@jonfreeman9682 i think it's the outcome of daniel's hacking ambitions and the several interventions and not intended. I like your explanation with the data archive for further analysis. But why is the data of former archives rendered in the current simulation? And why analysis at all if the simulation was benevolent for passengers in their kryolike sleep? More questions than answers :)

A new simulation can still start with a "new" them. Even if they survive, the whole thing will restart and start another loop. They're not real anyways.

Just think of it liked inception's limbo.. the more times you die the deeper you get stuck in simulation..

This entire series so far is completely pointless in the context of the series itself. It is a lot like time travel shows; where you begin in one place with one state, the time travel occurs and at the end you are right back where you began. Except in this series' context you don't get to see the "before state", all you get to see is the useless time travel, then the beginning state. Basically, the entire series the characters are suspended, asleep, during interstellar travel, that is how the show begins(although you don't get to see it) and that is how it ends. If you ask me, there are two directions this goes. Either the simulation had malfunctioned, and they somehow worked out a way of escaping it, which would be the premise of the show. Or, their experiences are just them dreaming while they were asleep, likely being just the last few moments right before they all wake up, and they are all waking up at a prescribed time, in order to fulfill the purpose that brought them out to space to begin with. You don't build a ship that enormous because reasons. There is a purpose to it, a very important purpose to it, as something like that would cost *_TRILLIONS_* of dollars, or the equivalent of dollars in other currencies. And using the resources to build it would put every country on the planet in a tight spot. It isn't like steel grows on trees, there is a finite amount of steel the world can produce each year. To build this spaceship, all of humanity on Earth would have to give up new creations that included steel for many consecutive years. So this ship's purpose would have to be immensely important. I mean, what would it take for you to give up new cars, new phones, new computers, new tables, new chairs, new dishware, new anything that has ANY amount of steel in it? There would be no new construction or manufacturing of any kind for many consecutive years. Only this ship, and projects that aid in its construction. Honestly, such a thing would inconvenience you in ways you cannot even comprehend right now. Building such a large spaceship as that, would change this world, it would be the end of life on this Earth as you know it. Heh, all just to send almost 2,000 people into space. Man, their objective would have to be vital to humanity's continuance.
