in better times I got to play with them on the same stage as part of the festival, our band played in the middle of the day and they closed the day with their wonderful atmospheric performance, accompanied by a colorful fire show, and all this took place in the middle of the forest. I wish I could go back to that day

The instrument @1:30 I believe is a Trumscheit. He's just holding it instead of it resting on the stage. You have to remember that WIM the founder of the group also makes the instruments. And there just isn't a lot of information on medieval musical items. This time was roughly from the 5th - 15th century. Here's a link if anyone else would like to read up on them. www.corvuscorax.de/tw/cc/band/musicians/

I think that the instrument at 1:29 is the TROMBA MARINA. There is an article about it on WIKIPEDIA. It is said to take its name from its sound which is that of a trumpet though it is obviously a string instrument.

@cathar1209 I'm talking exactly about that, I think François Villon's "Ballade de Mercy" was heavily inspired by the XIII century cantigas of Alfonso X "the wise". There are many similarities and at that time minstrels of Castille were travelling all over Europe. French troops have been in Spain also for a long time and the cantigas were very popular...

They speak many different languages but most members of the band are from Germany. They speak french in songs that follow importance to the theme of the album, which is usually Medieval times.

@bluechao Just seen your comment. It has recently been confirmed that Corvus Corax has been performing a live rendition of their song "Ballade De Mercy" in the pilot episode of the HBO TV series A Game of Thrones. This has also been confirmed by Norri on the A Song of Ice and Fire fourm back in 10/2009. The series is now well on the way in the USA and UK, not sure about rest of the EU. Hope that clears it up a bit.

@raonipaes: aah, ok, didn't understand what you meant in the first place. Yes, it's true. The "Cantigas" had an influence in music since they were written until some centuries later. And their mix of western and eastern influences was very attractive and offered many possibilities of creation / "re-creation". Minstrels and troubadours travelled around, as you said. In fact, people travelled a lot more than common belief may suppose about the Middle Ages, still greatly perceived as "dark" ages.
