It's not THAT bad actually - handling external wackiness is never an easy task, and when you're developing a library, each quirk of the way you implement a solution to the problem will ultimately be depended upon by your users, preventing a fix to be easily made (or sometimes at all). A much less grim example of this (for most of us) is how dictionaries are now ordered, and they will probably never be unordered again because (obviously) people have started depending on it as soon as it became a thing.
