I mean, I like all these guys in various combos but this performance was something else. What I particularly liked was that it was free flowing, moving around feels, small solo sections, changing it up and down. This is a special form of music with less form I think! You're going on a ride with them, but they are also taking you along, not leaving you behind.

on the drums there's a kick on the and of 3 and on 4 leading into a stick click on the and of 4 and a click on 1 but it feels like the two kicks are on the first two eigth notes of each measure its all just different ways to groove, try feeling songs in "nontraditional feels" to find new grooves

He wasn't snapping on 1 and 3, he was most definitely snapping on 2 and 4. To get a reference where beat 1 is, listen to the very first snare stroke the drummer plays at 0:29. That is beat 1. The groove he's playing isn't traditional 2 and 4, his emphasis is on beat 1 and the + of 2..
@louieatkins-turkish13497 жыл бұрын
I disagree. *Every* queue they play since that point suggests 1 and 3. Just listen to when things drop out/drop in, when phrasing begins/ends, etc. Besides, they're jamming, who cares about the first stroke, the beat is defined in the moment.
@demac2096 жыл бұрын
then somebody should tell mono where the 1 is, because his one is the someway everybody is hearing it cory tweeted about 1 and 3 clap and said theres nothing wrong with it.

funny, ive seen cory henry & the apostles recently and i think i have never enjoyed a concert more. but by the end i somehow thought to myself "i think i can play like that too" and now i'm asking myself how i could come to that assumption, i guess it was the euphoria, and maybe some booze. shame mononeon wasn't with them, the other bassist was dope as well though. the only other thing i was kinda saddened by was that cory always says the same things to the crowd like the how many bodies and of course they wont come up with new interactions each gig, but eh, sometimes it felt like he was totally somewhere else mentally as he said those routined lines, not to take away from his or the band's performance though, they were all very much in it and you could feel the energy in the crowd too.

Thing is, if one of them said 'Let's play a groove in F', they would just start and work it out. The choice was Superstition, which I know is a Cory favourite, but he chose at the time how much, or how little of the original he used. You're seeing a particular way of improvising here which is free to move in and out of different feels, depending upon how they....feel! They knew exactly what they were doing, but mostly as they were doing it. Has your perception changed in five years?
