I grew up in an inner city church and only 4 decades later it's truly representative of the area, well actually probably over 60% black, but more African as well as Jamaican now. I actually left over 25 years ago to start my own journey away from being the 'son of'. At the time Jamaicans represented about 5% but I truly benefited. There is something about black folks that connect on an emotional level with worship. I think us white folks were always afraid of getting too out of control. It helped being in a Pentecostal church I joined a cell church inner city plant and we again had Nigerian, Jamaican . I lived with a Nigerian for a couple of years and that started my journey of love for African music.Salif Keita 'Soro' was the first African Album I heard and I was blown away. I had the privilege of being pulled up on stage by the man himself at The London Festival Hall. I will always remember him stopping the music and getting people to dance - Another one of my gripes is why is there no dancing in church. In the 80s we had what we coined the Pentecostal hop. What's wrong with us white folk. I know going back years dancing was deemed to be of the devil. I wish there was more integration in churches.
