I would like to ask, sir. What do corydoras fish eat outside of the natural environment? When raised in a tank, what do they eat?
@belowwater
@belowwater Жыл бұрын
pretty much any food that sinks to the bottom and fits in their mouth. they are not difficult to feed.

Sadly, Brazil has a history of ignoring ecologists and only listening to economists. All previous governments have demonstrated a complete disregard for the species diversity that exists in their country, and have been motivated by greed and corruption by the ranchers and industrialists. Saving a tiny catfish that has no commercial value is not on their agenda. Those of us who live in Europe where, by comparison with the tropics, we have a low fish diversity, seem to have a greater appreciation of the fish fauna in another country than the national government. We must do our best to conserve this species in our tanks, it may be the only chance it has.

the world has a history of ignoring anything that does not bring profit. Don't forget that most of that destruction in Brazil, brought on my giant companies, supplies beef for Europe (and China and North America), bio-fuel for European cars, contracts for European hydroelectric turbines, and gold and other minerals for European investors. To think that Europe and all of the Northern Hemisphere countries are not a big part of the destruction and not entirely complicit in it would be false.

@@belowwater Agreed, Oliver. I am aware of the part that big business has in the destruction of the rainforest, and that it stretches back to the northern hemisphere. I still think it's sad that, apart from a handful of dedicated people in Brazil, it may be up to those of us in the European hobby to work to maintain this species in captivity. Thanks for sharing this video, a rare glimpse into the habitat of corys.

@@majorbruster5916 that is correct NO COMMERCIAL VALUE. I am also part of the species destruction industry as a land owner. When you first live on a farm you think that it is about YOU, ie people (farmers, graziers) trying to make money. You soon realise that the Government is driving the whole machine. Taxes mean land must be productive - commercial. It is not as simple as blaming land owners or primary producers. It is much more complex than that. I cannot afford to own a national park. It is as simple as that. My land is zoned agricultural and you have no choice but to use it that way - unless you are rich and can afford a park.

@@thesolaraquarium Agreed. I understand your situation and can identify with you to an extent. I was brought up in a farming community, worked on farms, lots of farms, small husband and wife lots, to large estates with 5 farm collectives. I cleaned pig sties, milked cows, milled dry feed and harvested crops before I moved to the University of London. So I understand that a small, inedible fish cannot halt the business of food production or mineral extraction. Having kept and bred cory species for years I have an affection for the little guys and think it is sad that one of these might disappear in the name of progress. I'm somewhat frustrated that I'm powerless to do anything.

@@majorbruster5916 sorry didn't mean to sound like I disagree. I agree with your post. You nailed it. No commercial value. That is the problem. As an aquarium enthusiast (conservationist) and land owner I am torn between my interest in nature and commercial reality. Your post was 100% correct. I simply wanted to point out the role of Government in this. Our Government is the land owner. Everyone else must comply with their system. They talk climate change/conservation/diversity - but their actions are commercial. Peace brother. On a positive note land owners have an interest in terrestrial weed control - invasive species (most of my time is spent on this and ferals). Invasive species (terrestrial) are bad for business. Natives are far better to have. Unfortunately the aquatic invasives have been ignored completely by agriculture. Large amounts of money are spent fighting terrestrial weeds. But of course we are the ones who introduced these weeds in the first place - unintentionally.

Not sure about Brazil, but as a land owner part of the problem is 'land taxes'. Owners of land have to pay taxes which mean that the land they own must be productive (grazing and farming). These taxes are quite high - it is like paying rent. This is a cost to you regardless of how you use the land - it must be paid. This is what is driving the extinction of species where I live. The places where the natives can live are being used for other things which are not compatible with them. Cattle is a prime example. An animal which is very destructive on water spots, but the world needs to eat. Farmers and graziers cannot afford to own a national park. This is the terrible reality of conservation and agriculture, primary industry today. Aquarium keepers get blamed for species destruction which is completely false. We are preserving species whose natural habitats are dissappearing. We are like zoos. The many fish that die in our aquariums don't matter. Fish die in the wild as well. It is about preserving the species.

My tank atarted with 3 corydoras and we got two babies. The corydoras were usually scared of me when I got near. But since the babies are there they are more trusting. Theybalso like to hunt for food on the surface if I leave a block of worm food. The adults never dared to go up. But now that the babies did, they all go up and eat together. Learned behavior. ?
@belowwater
@belowwater 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe just instinctual that if a fish is feeding at the surface and not getting picked off by a bird it is safe to go up, the baby fish have grown up in the aquarium may be less worried about it, and that entices the other fish to go up.

I planted 25 of these 1inch in my pond where I pump river water daily about 18mos ago. I was concerned the frogs got them until last week I saw a 7inch fish feeding on the rocks. I'm excited to see if they flourish. Not sure how long it takes for them to bread or how big they can get.

If these fish will be gone then we need to go in there and capture as many species as we can and spread them to the fish keeping world to preserve them in our tanks…….

I completely agree with you on the preservation of these fish.. and there are already so many in the aquarium trade, with professional and hobbyists already breeding an abundance of them. So no need to collect more, but to make sure to preserve what we have so that if and when we can recreate or fix the issues in their natural environment, we can re introduce many back into the wild. This method of conservation is and has been used for the reintroduction and saving of many different animal species. It is one of the many good things about this hobby.

There is a strong chance that what happenes to specialized small creek fish species today in South America happened European specialized small creek species too, just 200 years earlier and nobody noticed. It makes no sense at all that the number of small, creek dwelling species in Europe is so low and the few existing species are all spread to every suitable creek all over Europe. Most likely there were many more species before rivers were converted to waterways and reservoirs. But how could it be proven? Very similar species are hard to distinguish when dried or in alcohol and many are impossible to distinguish by their skeleton only.
