Nice to see you testing the networkcable with your electrician tool.. But i believe you need to put the master on one side, put it on, let it run 12345678, then go with the remote to read from that side to see if your connections are also 12345678 to see if any of them are in the right order and make good connection.. Keep up the good work 💪 😎 greetings from Fryslân (The Netherlands)

No, you dont need to because it's on a loop. This particular tester is useful as you dont need to go from one side to the other to check. Many of them can only be checked on the main unit.

15:50 I was testers are OK. But some thing I learned from having access to about four different ones is that some of them will show the fault on one side and some of them will show the fault on the other side so it's good to know which side you're particular unit shoes on and then label it. Otherwise you could be thinking all your cables are good because you're using the end with the battery when it's the other side that's showing the fault or vice versa. Also I have thought about using nail polish (probably clear although a color would indicate that it was protected) on the ends of those pass-through connectors to just add a little bit extra protection. But as you said if you have moisture problems in that Jack already you've got bigger problems.

Small comment on the network test at 16:00 - you really want to check *both* the master and remote ends to make sure that both are reading in the correct order - for example if you've not crimped the right pairs at both ends, the master side will send signals down all of the strands in sequence, and the slave end will display out of sequence. I know from painful experience of making up CAT5 cables and doing many cable runs as a network engineer!

It looks like he had the sender unit in his hands, which will always go in the right order (unless it's not working). You need to see the slimmer receiver device to see it receives all signals, and in the right order... You'd unfortunately see the same results as here, even with nothing plugged into that end...

How much is a proper tester than can certify a cable, often they can have good continuity but other issues.
@WelbyMcRoberts
@WelbyMcRoberts 8 күн бұрын
@@edc1569 Certification is upwards of £8000-9000 for a certifier, and in almost no case would most people need to do certification. It's useful if you're a telco, or if you're doing 100's of runs, but honestly a good tester is more than ample as you usually only need to do a Qualification test. The likes of fluke make the linkiq testers that will do qualification style tests for about £2000, but even then i'd make an argument that for *most* jobs, even this would be overkill. Most lower end "professional" testers are 'good enough', the likes of the nettool, or pocket ethernet are even then usually overkill, but will do confirmation that not only the cable is working, but an end to end test works (check that packets can go back and forth)

I totally agree, I paid an extra £2.5k to have my solar done by a local company had to wait 10 months due to how busy they are and it was well worth it the attention to detail and how they explained everything and put decent bird protection on the panels. A year later the system has saved me over £1500 in the first year with cheap charging and sell over 2.500 kWh to the grid and saving 4.200kWh in energy used. Cory is spot on save up get a good system from a local solar panel fitter better service, will have customer support and better after care as these local companies will be around when the nation ones have gone bust.

10:00 solar panels need a decent clean every 3 months or so. depends on how dusty or how much lichen grows on them. i dont have a lichen problem, i get dirt and dust from the paddocks all over mine, really drops the production. ive also noticed if i can keep the panels cooler, i get far better production. (i'm down under, so it the panels real toasty in summer.)

Very interesting to see the differences between the US and UK installs. Being an expat from the UK, the US way does seem a lot different, and I'm not sure which I actually prefer, especially when it comes to the way which grounding is treated. For the most part homes here are closest to a TT system (not quite, but close), which for a solar+storage makes it a lot less "complex" with no active PEN fault detection or similar needed. However with the amperages that are in use in most American homes, and the reduced voltage per part of the phase, it makes the cable runs quite large. In my case I have 4x PW3's - one is the leader, the rest followers, but all are wired into a CU. The CU is something in the region of 45cm x 90cm x 15cm, and has a 60A breaker for each power walls, a 'main' breaker at 200A, and a breaker for the Enphase AC Coupled solar (I think 80A?). The Enphase goes off to the combiner, the main breaker goes over to a cut off big-ol switch. That then goes off to the gateway, where the main feed is connected to, as is the house, and the feed from the renewable / storage main breaker. It takes up most of the side of the house, and the cables are ... not small. With it being a 200A circuit, and there needing to be 2x 200A legs (as most homes are Split phase, L1Low, Neutral, L1High - where if neutral is 0V, L1H is +120, L1L is -120) and then a neutral + earth. I think, if memory serves me right, the cable for the main feed, and the feed in/out of the house is 4/0+4/0+2/0+0 AWG which is 2x 120mm2, 67.5mm2 and 54mm2. Each power wall has a slightly smaller cable, I think 25/25/25/16mm2. If it is of interest, I'd be happy to send photos so you can have a look at a US install

I love my PW3, but the annoying thing is the warranty, everyone publicises it as unlimited cycles, but if you - even once - engage in grid arbitrage (e.g. export from battery having charged when it is cheap) or participate in a VPP (e.g. intelligent flux) then your warranty is 37.8MWh which is 0.76 cycles per day for 10y.
@LtShifty
@LtShifty 9 күн бұрын
I don't see the issue? They offer an unlimited warranty for standard low stress usage, and a still respectable warranty when pushing the unit to its peak power rating.
@richardskinner6391
@richardskinner6391 9 күн бұрын
@LtShifty other unlimited warranties are unlimited. It's not made clear that limit is in place. You could easily do a cycle a day charging overnight or during the sun and exporting at peak rates, which exceeds the warranty. Most people will want to export at higher rates, at least once ever, so for most people it isn't unlimited.

Great video. I’ve installed a few PW3s now and I’m continually learning. EV Ultra will work, but page 84 of the manual recommends a minimum 0.8mm conductor for the 12v runs due to potential volt drop. The cat5 in Ev Ultra is 24AWG/0.51mm. I use Doncaster Powerwall connect and rate the mcb and output accordingly. Also, those in line fuse carriers are a nightmare. They are now only needed if the kA is above 10 to a max of 16kA. Easiest thing often to do is put a switched fuse upstream leaving you loads more room in the gateway. 16mm trirated works a treat in those gateways too. Hope this helps.

)UK version of PW3, at least mine, has three inputs for panel strings with a isolator switch included in the housing. The US version takes 6 strings with no isolator. Looking inside the box it looks like the space for three terminations in the UK box has been taken by the included isolator and presumably the electronics count reduced as well. One issue is the Tesla APP for 'control' of the PW - has a nice graphical interface etc. but it does not tell you the generation level of each connected string, only reporting total generation. In my case I would like to know how much each string generates and for how long so, when I have funds, I can determine which aspect to add more panels to. The Tesla One (Installers APP) does show each string generation but it is not easy to work with - assuming that the owners should be working with it. The Tesla Fleet APP does however report a load of stats should you be using Home Assistant so all is not bad (though it also does not report per string generation)

@barrieshepherd7694
@barrieshepherd7694 9 күн бұрын
@@corymac TBH I think is probable a wise design decision. Few UK installations would justify 6 strings, but I'm advised many US ones do. Reducing the number to 3 is probably a compromise which has allowed a string isolator to be included (the RH side of the unit) which saves on the install of another external switch (s) and no doubt saves on internal electronics. I've read that US codes require external isolators for all panels and strings accessible to firefighters so the internal one would probably not comply in the US anyway. The APP capability is, for most, more than adequate and PW3 can also be used with NetZero - it's only the inability to see only total string generation that annoys me. I've had my PW3 for 4 months now and no issues - all I need now is for the DNO to get their finger out and authorise feed in etc. (can't sort out the G99 or G100 issues) But I see you also have experienced DNO issues 😂

Cracking install mate. Regarding the foot note about the Tesla Powerwall - your opinion is exactly the same as mine. As a ecosystem, powered by an excellent app it is excellent. But when used outside of the US in terms of wiring and norms used outside of the US it could be way better. I installed the V2 in HK (same electrical rules as the UK basically) and some V2 in Mainland China and honestly I would had preferred to have a different system developed to outside the US instead of a one size fits all approach we have now. But their app and integration with everything Tesla is very good. But for outside the US I would prefer a Haier Smart Cube (OEM system that SigEnergy also uses), the MyEnergi one or the Solar Edge one. Or even the customizable to your needs Victron (that I really like a lot, honestly). But that is my own experience, since at least on this side of the world there are tons of manufacturers, some that develop their own systems, others that just rename others with their branding. Same with Solar Panels, same with battery backup units.

@imark7777777
@imark7777777 9 күн бұрын
@@edc1569 yes split phase, so we're actually dealing with three wires 4 if it's a subpanel. never actually installed a gateway just sort of know what the process is by watching videos. I've done enough electrical work that I'm starting to get annoyed that I'm not licensed when I'm finding other peoples mistakes. That's one of my goals for 2025. The conductors that are running in from the meter are fairly large capable of 200A they're quite thick I can't remember what the specific sizes (probably about the size of a thumb if not bigger depending on insulation), and they're usually aluminum which is bigger to save money that's about the only place where it's allowed. (aluminum can be used on branch circuits for specific appliances over certain amperage greater than 40 amp assuming terminals are rated for it and deoxidit is used. And is approved for service entrance conductors which is usually where the savings comes in otherwise not worth it ). but they definitely look bigger than the 100A meter tails over the pond. So that's 2 cables and the bear conductor twisted together for the neutral which tend to be a little substantial. Most of the transfer switches I've seen are about twice that size to have adequate working room throughout everything. As far as the power wall I think those are the same but definitely a different transfer switch/gateway. Although a lot of new houses are going to 400A service which basically consists of coming in and splitting off to two panels 200A each. and as each leg needs to be capable of 200A at 120V per leg or 400A at 240V across both legs. It makes for some thick cable to bend around trim, strip and land. I wired a habitat house under the supervision of a electrician from incoming lines to receptacle. and replaced (as a homeowner allowance) my electrical panel from a federal fire Pacific panel (the company essentially slipped a check under the UL certification companys door to get approval. After things stabilized in the country UL came back and said no these don't actually function properly and aren't safe. Yeah no kidding you can touch wires together an arc weld without them tripping. Unfortunately they were installed almost everywhere ).

Elon musk is a hot topic right now. I think you’re right about the PW3, great product, but could be a lot better if they just spoke to their installers

Also with cheap installs comes more likely to fail. Fails can cause fires and I’ve already been asked by the house insurance if I have solar. Save in electricity, house insurance swallows the savings 🤮

From what I have seen of Tesla for solar and their EV charging is that to a client they know the brand so think they must be top of the range in terms of quality etc. but exactly as you said at the end they are more suited to American market where they are still in the dark ages electrically. No PEN fault detection, No load managing as standard has them miles behind other EV brands. I haven’t used the solar kit though I am trying to stick with Fronius and BYD
