Fascinating! With that amount of storage and your three phase connection, you'd be killing it energy trading by charging low and selling back later. Or, get a high power DC charger for an EV for fun. Or, just stick some wheels and motors on your house. 😅

When the biggest problem is deciding where to put the second battery you didn't need, you're doing well. Also consider using bolts rather than welding a steel frame. Welding isn't always necessary and bolts are a better job in many applications. Some 50mm box steel tube and 5mm plate steel and you're off to a winner. You're right though when saying "it could be fun".

Fortunately these sort of projects do have a payback. Good shout. Bolting is a good option. I had the idea of the frame being powder coated. It would actually be easier to get powder coated in sections. Thanks for commenting

Brilliant work congratulations how are the batteries coping with the cold?
@TheOfficialBatteryMan
@TheOfficialBatteryMan 9 сағат бұрын
So far so good. It’s been cold recently so the cells have only been upto 20c. Cooling down to 5c when idling. This is with slightly below 0 temps. I do see slightly warmer temps from the partially insulated battery. Ideally I want it running around 25c constantly. Potential to have a coolant loop that takes heat from the inverter and shares it all between the packs in winter. Just working out how to do that neatly

In terms of your battery cover. You could make a wooden box the size of your cover and then fill it with moulding silicone (like they use for making molds of body parts etc. This will give you a negative copy of your battery cover that you can use to make a more stable positive casting. Use heated perspex then to make the actual clear cover you require. Sounds quite simple in my head 🤣🤣

Loved this video. It was wonderful to share the excitement of it first working. I am curious what you did to "get it working", did you just disconnect and reconnect and hope? Secondly, what was your plan if it turned out the battery was a dud? What would you have done? Thanks :) Regarding mounting the second battery, have you considered ceiling mounting inside the garage or external on the flat roof of the garage?
@TheOfficialBatteryMan
@TheOfficialBatteryMan 14 сағат бұрын
Initially it was a parts battery I could potentially revive or repair in future. Worst case I could do strip down videos. Make good from what would be good. Or work to understand or break down how the internal BMS works. It still hasn’t been open source documented. In an ideal world I would have a 10ft container. I don’t want to loose to much garage space
@DaveW-h2r
@DaveW-h2r 14 сағат бұрын
@@TheOfficialBatteryMan Right, but if you mount on the external roof of the garage you wouldn't lose any space? Do you feel the flat roof could bear the weight and the exposure to weather would be ok? 10' container would be nice, but then you still lose ground/garden space.

I do like the idea of digging down. My worry is dampness. So far little experience with watertight underground holes. There is a 3D scan online. I’m trying to see if I can make a mold from that design. But you’re suggesting almost like a rectangle box ? Hmm. That’s uhh outside the box thinking
@xtwistedsanityx
@xtwistedsanityx 9 сағат бұрын
@@TheOfficialBatteryMan tbh I was planning for it be sat on a wooden frame laid on the floor with some kingspan in the gaps then decking over the top. No digging, that way I can still use the space above for storage etc... and don't have to worry about the wall, toppling or my lack of welding skills
@xtwistedsanityx
@xtwistedsanityx 8 сағат бұрын
@@TheOfficialBatteryMan For the cover, imagine a 5-10mm thick wall following the outline of the metal casing all the way round than just a bit of perspex traced and cut to the same shape but flat on the top. It could be etched and back lit to make it look a bit prettier.

Why do you need those battry for storing that ammount of electricity?
@TheOfficialBatteryMan
@TheOfficialBatteryMan 9 сағат бұрын
Good question. A few reasons. As a business case for buying and selling electricity. Buying when the grid is under the least strain and selling back at peak times. Proving what can and should be done. Reuse rather than recycle. There is a lot of value in EV packs that have come out of fairly new vehicles. Also this is KZbin. Go big or go home 😂

for my case (just a single 62kwh tesla model 3 LFP battery pack) we chew through 50 kwh a day (or more), so mostly the battery stops us drawing from the grid (less than 1kwh/day for the last month). We have two electric cars, electric ride-on mower, electric self propelled walk behind mower, 3 hot water systems, various battery chainsaws and trimmers (etc) - almost no fossil fuel on our property (except diesel for the tractor, and that becomes electric in a year or two). On the plus side, we never visit a petrol station (except for the diesel) - so almost all our energy is electric. Add to that, we are in Australia, dealing with occasional bush fires, so battery backup for our mains system gives us more options for staying safe. Think of the dollars you save if you don't have gas bills, no petrol station bills, etc - that is all part of the equation.

Ev batteries have been sold for many many years. But usually people open them and connect directly to the cells with a bms of their choice, like jk, instead of all this silly fuss. Byd car batteries are sold often from china in smaller pieces but still in the heavy metal casing. I bought a 12v250ah for 190$ 4 years ago. I can barely lift it. Its encapsulated in a metal case that have interlocking features for series and parallel connecting of more blocks. Anyway, it works great and was true to claimed capacity. They also come in much larger sizes but that one was fine for me. I just gave it a 200a jk bms and called it a day. Few minutes work and done. Can you not just do the same?

google ev burns down the house. Info seems to suggest the most dangerous time for these is batteries that are old, unbalanced, possible problem with the battery monitoring system that balances all the batteries etc. I wouldn't put these batteries in or anywhere near the house.
@johnbarlow7524
@johnbarlow7524 45 минут бұрын
The Tesla batteries self balance (via the built in BMS). Ask any fire fighter what causes the most grief - EVs or household items (such as kids battery scooters, etc). The later causes far more fires, even after you do the math of number of EVs versus the number of houses with built-down-to-a-price battery devices.
