Today we will talk about cosmetics and beauty in ancient Rome: how did Roman matrons apply make-up and what substances they used?
We will focus on the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, based on the depictions of the time and the texts of ancient authors.
I would like to thank Eugenio Nocciolini for lending his voice to interpret Martial's epigram [Martial, IX, 37 - Italian translation by the author].
Please note: Many creams and products from Roman times were made from toxic substances: don't try them at home!
