Yes, you need to consider both level and tone to get the right color. Level is how dark or light the hair color is; like level 1 is black and level 10 is pale yellow. Tone is how warm or cool the haircolor is: like ash is cool, blue is a cool tone, and red, yellow and orange are warm tones; hope this helps.

@60jeanne In general, it all depends how much orange and gold is left after the lift. If the orange is too strong, then I will use a violet base toner alone, but, sometimes I mix it with a little natural beigh to not turn the hair purple. For example; the Redken Shades EQ has the 09 V (violet), that is an excellent toner, but, it might turn the hair gray or too violet if the hair is very pale blonde, that's why it is sometimes mixed with 09 NB (natural brown )to lessen the violet.

@medusadoll The complementary color cancel each other to shades of brown depending on the level and intensity of the colors. Example; Level 8 gold (yellow) and level 8 violet (blue+red) would make a level 8 or 7 beige:the lightest shade of brown; why even level 7, because color over color makes it darker. If we have level 4 red and we add level 4 ash (green=yellow+blue), it will make a brown color (level 4-3), since it has all primary colors in proportion; red, yellow, and blue.

Just keep using your blue black color, but to make it look more blue, add a shine, like proclaim or any silicone shine styling aid, and your blue will bounce back with the light. Black haircolor usually dulls the hair, so the shine is the trick to make the blue in black to show through; check it in natural light, you will see it. Another option will be to add blue highlights; lighten streaks of hair and add blue toner.

Your roots got lighter because the haircolor processes faster with body heat from the scalp. If you want to find out what haircolor will be best for you, and if the black is the right color for your skin, go to a wig store and try some wigs with different hair colors, you will immediately know what color will be best for you. If you don't have a wig store around you, go to a Halloween store, since it is halloween time, they offer wigs, see if the colors work for you. Hope this helps.

Yes, Green additive will work to darken the hair and neutralize the red. When you lighten the hair, it will turn orange based light color, try Shades EQ (Redken demi permanent) 09V 1 and a half ounces and 09NB half once mixed with 2 ounces of Redken processing solution or 10V developer. The violet should soften the orange, but don't expect it to completely get rid of it, hence you will get the desired honey gold highlights. Let me know how it came out.

Use a violet base toner; you can use 1 1/2 oz of 9V from Redken Shades EQ mixed with 1/2 oz of 9NB and 2 oz of Shades EQ Processing Solution (or 10V peroxide). Hope this helps.

It is hard to tell without analyzing your hair, but if you have black hair and want to go to medium brown, you need to use ash blond or 12A or even 12N to cancel the warm tones in your hair and lighten your hair to medium brown. Keep away from the roots a little bit, and once you finish applying to your entire hair, go back and do the roots. This only works if your hair is virgin (uncolored), otherwise you need to do bleach highlights; you said you have color on, then do some highlights, then.

Pigment means the coloring matter in the haircolor. For example: red haircolor 6R has a lot of red pigment. The natural color that we are born with, can also have a lot of red pigment. A lady born with auburn hair has a lot of visible red pigment, but, a dark haired lady could have red pigment in her hair, but it might not show until it is bleached. Red, yellow and blue combination make brown, so any dark brown or black color (natural) has red in it, otherwise it cannot be brown or black.

You can mix your colors together as long as you mix it with the right amount of peroxide. For example: you can mix 1 oz of 611 (level 6 ash) with 1 oz of 6W (level 6 warm gold) and 4 oz of peroxide for Wella Color Charm haircolor since the mixing ration is 1:2. 2oz color and 4oz peroxide. You can even mix 3 haircolors together if you wish, for example 1 oz 611 (6N ash)+1/2oz of 5RV+1/2oz of 6RV(red-violet) for gray hair to go red (total of 2oz haircolor) and mix it with 4oz of peroxide.

Do highlights. You can use bleach, but you will definitely get gold to orange undertones; to tone it down, I will recommend to use 05G of shades EQ from Redken for caramel color, or, if you want to try to cool the yellow/orange tone, try mixing 09V and 9NB from Redken shades EQ demi-permanent color. What do you reccommend for someone who is multiracial and have natural jet black hair courtesy of their Asian and Native American ancestery trying to lighten to a warm blond? I have dark brown eyes, dominate yellow undertones with hints of pink. My hair would be consider virgin, I dont have any dyes in it and is in its natural state. Also my outer skintone turns a golden bronze in the summertime.

Hi, I want to dye my own hair using schwartzcoff color. My hair stylist always mixed a 6 with a 3 but I'm not sure on the proportions he used. I Iike to achieve the darkest natural brown possible. Also he used a shampoo toner to give it a glossy look. any recommendations on how to mix those colors and the developer to use, to achieve that color? I asked and showed a stylist pictures of rose gold on brunettes and asked for babylights/ombre-highlights. He bleached it and it looks red-orange (looks like 633 on your book) and then he put on hot pink but now my hair looks very fiery instead of the nice peachy-pink golden sheen I expected. +Ujala Baqi Use gray magic: couple of drops of this product into the color mix will help it to penetrate and cover your hair better if it is a lighter color, or use a level darker color, like if you are using level 7or 8, use level 6; a little darker, but it will cover your gray hair better.

I have to tell you that the easiest way to neutralize it is to use blue based haircolor (not blue color: blue-based haircolor) which will neutralize the orange. For better result do a strand test first before applying it all around the hair. Hope it words :)

If the hair is artificially colored and you want to make it lighter, you need to use a color remover or lightener.

You need to use a lightener or bleach cap it; a little bleach + 20V developer and a little shampoo; make it liquid. Apply it all over like a shampoo cap; mush it around and remove; don't keep it long; watch the color development. Note: lighter hair color will not lighten your hair; color over color makes it darker; even when you apply a lighter color. Another choice would be to add some highlights. I would not recumbent to lighten the whole hair; the result is not always predictable and could be uneven. Do a strand test first; it helps you to determine if your mixture will work and how much time is needed; will show the results without jeopardizing the whole hair. Hope this helps!
