Thank you for posting this. I have been dying for a few years now and the gatekeeping appears to be more male/female based in my opinion. The "select group" you talk about are who I call the "tie dye bros" and they tend to not promote female dyers, no comments on their work, no encouragement or support. It's gross and it's extremely obvious. I have had designs copied that I've made and nobody gives me the same sort of respect these dudes always ask for when it comes to some elite tutorial they've created. Anybody can fold fabric and dye it. It's tie dye and it should be fun and I appreciate people like you sharing bc it keeps the art alive and grows interest and makes sure it will be enjoyed for years to come by -everyone- and not just a certain few. Keep on doing you and know I'm thankful.

Ooff. I feel like you really hit the nail on the head, here. I will say, the negative feedback I got, was from the group you identify. About 3 guys who basically tried to communicate “you should be ashamed of yourself” for sharing this. 😅
@breathelove67799 ай бұрын
@@corkylorenz I'm not surprised at all. Nobody says anything about it but it's so obvious. Lol. There's no preset rules for tie dye except the basic chemistry rules that make it work in the first place. I say share what you want to share. I find it hard to believe anything we create nowadays WAS NEVER created before. There was a whole culture of tie dye before most of these tie dyers were even born. Anyway, you can't make everybody happy but you don't owe anybody anything either. I am respectful of peoples designs to a certain extent but they take it way too far. It's not exactly fair and equal gatekeeping when just the bros have all the secrets.

Corky, I really appreciate your videos and I extra appreciate this one. As a very minor, very local person who does tie dye, I've bumped into the gatekeeping, bs you're talking about. As an old fart, I don't do socials like facebook, but have found the online community, as I've experienced it, far too provincial and stultifying. One of the things I love about your channel is your scientific approach to tie dye and showing what you know. It's very helpful to see the approach and results that you post here, and I've benefited from your approach. I hope that you decide to share this technique for other tie dyers out there like myself. If someone has a new technique and they're making cool stuff, I think you should share it with the world! And if you're so small minded to see the tie dye world as a zero sum game, rather than, what I at least hope it to be, a vibrant community of artists sharing trying to make the world a more colorful place, then you're not 'getting' it. If all you're about is about monetary gain as an artist, then you've already lost what it is to enjoy and produce art. If you have a technique that you've invented or mastered, then those coming after you will only pale in comparison and you should feel no need to gatekeep. If, however, you embrace and collaborate with others, then the entire community benefits and shares that magic with others which will lead to more innovation and exploration. I hope you'll share your new-found technique and apply your unique approach to it! Fantastic shirt and videos!

I just found you and really enjoy your channel. I'm with you and with many others that commented. I'm not a dyer yet, but have been going to KZbin University for years now and have accumulated dyes and supplies. This is the year! If it wasn't for the MANY videos, I wouldn't be interested. The dyers i follow love to share and to get others involved. To me they spend an extraordinary amount of time thinking/designing, filming, editing to promote tie dying. I'm not interested in anyone who is of the 'gatekeeper' mentality. I want to surround myself with people/experiences that are positive and filled with happiness. Tie dye represents that to me. I really love that shirt. The pastels are awesome. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos on this technique. Thank you for being you. Because of that, I'm now a subscriber!!! 🥰🥰🥰

I like to share because everyone puts their own spin on. There are a few tie tires that I have been trying to figure out their methods for a few years. One is Chaka cloth and I love the watercolor sort of look. My favorite tie dye is Mojo Pierce and he just came back. I love his style, and I think he just has this really unique technique that he has come up with.

When I first started dyeing about 12 years ago, I didn't ask questions because there was no support from the experienced. I tried rolling fabric back then, doubt I tied it tightly, and had poor results so dropped the idea. Thank you for your detailed videos and discussion, I will be attempting it when I get my dye season started again next week.

Yeah I remember about seven years ago when I started people were very secretive. And they were very shamey about people who would ask questions. I’m glad that things are changing because it helps everybody to learn, innovate, and experiment more. Since I did this tutorial I’ve seen other people do it without all the tying and they get really great results. So you might not need to do as much tying.

Good things should always be shared. I appreciate your informative videos. I’m a newbie to tie dye and I sit at the feet of people like you, Riah, Lana, Jake, Mr tie dye and belladonna to name a few. So thank you. And it sounds like you came up with your own pattern anyway. Yay!

I also have found the gatekeeping mentality frustrating. I love it when people share tutorials or even descriptions of their processes, and Ive learned so much from those folks, you included, Corky. As for this particular situation- I can understand the thoughts behind not wanting to share a technique you have worked on. I dont think its fair to say that anyone owes anything to other dyers- it does take time to make photos, videos, descriptions, tutorials, explanations, etc. and of course all of the time spent working on the technique. Not everyone is adept at doing all of that extra work, or have time, let alone Want to do it. So I do understand if anyone doesnt want to, but I think its fantastic that there are people who do. I have shared things Ive learned and posted tutorials and explained my results online and in person. As far as expecting OTHER people not to share it, welllll, I think that is a little too far. If someone else figures it out, I think its ok for them to talk about it.

Everything evolves eventually. We all learn from those before us, what ever it is. Thankfully we have people in this world that can reverse engineer things. I am just coming back into this hobby after having to move 400 miles last year and then moving again a few months later. Seeing a few of these in the FB groups but then not seeing any process led me to you. Looking forward to watching your channel. Great work! ✌️🌈

I say share! This explains why there aren't very many video tutorials on this style. I thought for sure you were going to show me!!! You KNOW YOU WANT TO!!!! 😈 I kind of get it... if it's something they made up themselves and they want to profit off of it then of course they would not want to share the process. Maybe it loses a little of it's uniqueness once the secret recipe is out. One thing I noticed and love about the tie dye community is their generosity, when it comes to sharing knowledge on the subject. And I thank you All for those KZbin videos!!! Otherwise, I probably wouldn't be tie dying.

Thank you for your encouragement! The community has come a long way recently, with being open to sharing. When I first started you’d get shamed out of groups for asking how to get clean geode lines. 🤣 Maybe that’s why I’m so relentless about sharing now. I do have a few videos up now for this rolled technique!!

I spent some time as well looking for a tutorial/instructions for the cosmic egg last summer. No luck so far. I do not sell my tie dye. I do give it away to friends and family. I understand some folks feel it is taking some rice out of their bowl. Others like yourself take a lot of time and resources to video tutorials. And for that I am grateful. Thank you.

Well, I have been ostracized from another niche craft community for sharing too much. I think I’m just feeling past anxiety about that. I'm with you, Corky! I've been dyeing a long time, and when I first started, not sharing was the prevailing attitude - before the internet really got going, it was really hard to learn new techniques. I love the groups that are on social media now that encourage sharing of techniques, colors, etc. I love your work and look forward to learning more about the cosmic egg and your geode methods!

I reached out to a couple dyers on instagram about it and they basically told me “the people who have learned it had to spend months to do so and I can’t just tell you how” kinda sad to see the gatekeeping in the community surrounding this pattern considering the fold itself isn’t insanely difficult. It’s just gate keeping for the sake of gate keeping.

I think you’re on the right track. And it’s important to be somewhat analytical while in the throes of a creative endeavor. Also, I agree that it is kind of dumb to be secretive about techniques especially when nothing can be perfectly reproduced when it comes to dyeing. No 2 are alike.

So I just discovered this style, have not tried it yet but am in a Tie dye group that is based on sharing and talking about what we do. In that group they are even keeping this a secret? As I just saw this for the first time today, I haven't had a chance to go down the same rabbit hole that you were on lol. The shirt you made is awesome, great job! Now my personality is....if someone want to keep something a secret to a select group, it's game on to try and figure it out if only just once!
@corkylorenz10 ай бұрын
Game on yes! I feel like that is the only reason I wanted to figure it out, because I usually don’t pay attention to what anyone else is doing. I just do geodes over and over. 😆 It sounds like someone else just spilled the beans, so I bet more info will become available on the different variations soon! I just recorded myself making another and now I’m waiting on the ice to melt. 🥳

Just curious, since you seem to like to experiment, would you be interested in some methods for neon\fluorescent tie dye? I've not ever been able to find good dye for this but figured out how to do it with silkscreen ink that I'd be happy to share if there's interest. Can be combined with regular procion too although that makes it a bit more complicated. Anyway, I too the the gatekeeping and love that you figured this out - I'd never heard of it before. I am part of the group where people share their technics as a part of master class therefore making income. Obviously, they can make money as long as people come to learn. For you it might be a hobby, for them an income. My take, I would consider the group member terms, how close is it, how special is it. If it is rather public then u are not under “legal” terms. You’ve realised it yourself and you are free to do with your knowledge whatever you want. For example, you can grow your audience by sharing new design. And.. tie dye is never the same. Btw the shirt looks awesome, color combination is very special. I personally love the back

Anti-gatekeeper here! Gatekeeping is so pro-capitalist/anti-community and I’m not here for it. I started following you because aside from your beautiful work, you seem to really enjoy sharing your knowledge and process with others and that’s something I enjoy doing myself! Additionally, I checked out the other folks doing things in this style and I easily prefer yours. Imo, it goes to show that the same technique can give different results for different people and that progress is made when we stand on the shoulders of giants. All that said, I also love giving credit where due and promoting the work of our predecessors and teachers. :)

If you did that shirt on your own technique and experimentation, then you can choose to share or not share if you want to. The "original" Creator's process is probably different than what you did, even if similar. They can choose to not share if they want to and that's fair too but they cannot expect others to live by someone else's rules. I remember a show on Fox in the 90s where a masked magician revealed the tricks to some of the most popular illusions and tricks of all time. Their reasoning is that it would drive magicians to create new illusions and tricks and to step their game up. This is the same thing!

I am anti-gatekeeping. That's the basics of it. Gatekeeping is silly. If they had LITERALLY INVENTED tie-dye, then I could see it being a trade secret/copyright infringement, but this? This is collective cultural knowledge. If you come up with an idea and say "Hey everyone: this is how I got these results!" and describe your process, I don't think there's anything they can do about it. They might be grumpy, but that's it. I derive my distaste for gatekeeping from the TikTok creator, Kahn. People post videos of themselves getting amazing thrift shop finds but keep the shop location to themselves, and when Kahn runs across it, she sleuths around and publishes her best guess at the site, which is always correct. It's people who want to have the elite status/inside knowledge/power. That's icky behaviour.
@CWorgen573210 ай бұрын
P.s. your "forbidden fruit" concept is the "strong sense of justice" they describe ;)

I will have to check out Kahn! I think I’m having residual anxiety from when I was booted from the main pad groups because of my sewing pattern shapes. My social media presence is more diverse now, but it was really devastating then. 😅 I share pretty much everything I learn and it always helps me to see what other people do with the information! I can learn from their experiments based on how they tweak what I suggest. P
