I'm just glad that it's me and my cousin with a couple of friends every year so we don't have to deal with that. Extra hotel room tip: if you're a minor and you are rooming with someone, MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR PARENTS KNOW THEM. As obvious as this sounds, I've been in a situation where me and a friend had our own room and were woken up at 3 AM because one of her friends was raped and they needed somewhere to stay while the cops were brought in. Don't room with people older than you that you've met at other cons and have ONLY seen at cons. Make sure you guys know each other. Also, DO NOT LIE TO YOUR PARENTS. You think you'll get away with saying 'oh, I'm staying with _' when you're actually staying with someone else. They will find out. That's what's happened to multiple people, and it's very unsafe.

Find the one older female at the con who likes to dress up in a cosplay that's as non sexy as it gets, lol. Costumes like Grandma Sophie from Howl's Moving Castsle, Ubaba from Spirited Away.. that's my jam. For those who are on a budget and have to bring your own food to the convention, I recommend bringing a cooler (I usually pick up a disposable styrofoam cooler from Walmart). You can fill the cooler with ice from the hotel ice machines and keep your perishables/drinks cold. Otherwise, instant ramen/oatmeal/etc. works great. Just make sure you bring a water heater (electric kettle) if your room doesn't have a coffee maker.
@HallowqueenCrafting9 жыл бұрын
Michael Sul Even better, save up and spring for an electric cooler. Works just like a fridge, completely portable, and you don't get everything soggy as the ice melts. They're pricey, yes, but they're a one time buy, and they make everything, including road trips a heck of a lot easier, since they have a plug in for your car.

I don't really know if this applies to most conventions/states/countries/whatever, but since I travel a lot, I stick to the same hotel chain all the time. This way, I get discounts (or accumulate points) in that specific chain, which makes the stay wayyy less costly. (even less than the discounts the convention offers!)

My strategy is to find a hotel where you have to walk at max. 500m to get to a bus or train station to the convention; because after the convention, you're gonna be tired as hell and wanna get to your hotel.

I'd say to also be careful of creeps just hanging out in the hotels trying to look for a place to party, hangout, or just trying to get in your room. Had an experience with a random guy who followed my friends and I off the elevator, wanting to party in our room. Yeah no way! Also if you're one of those party rooms, please be respectful of other con goers. Try to keep the noise level to a minimum, mostly around the time people may be sleeping, try not to scream in the halls. Thank you. Great vid MangoSirene! Just a quick tip safety I want to throw out there for everyone who is new to this ~ when finding roomates to room with you at cons, PLEASE choose wisely and find people that you at least know and are good friends with. You want to room with people who you feel comfortable with in that type of area and sleeping arrangements. In the worse case sensario you cant find any of your friends who are going to that one con that you really want to go at and then you meet some new people who are going to that same con that you feel like they would be perfect to room with, before making room arrangements, set up a day to go and meet up with them in person first. Spend a day with them at least getting to know them and see how they act because knowing who they are and how they act will help you see if this is a person you would feel comfortable in sharing a room at a hotel. You want to feel comfortable AND safe in this room with the people sharing it with you. Its a whole different experience of comfort when rooming with friends vs new people you just met/strangers and it will, just like Mangosirene said, will make or break how your weekend will go. Choose to have positve people in your room who will treat you with respect and love and will honor your comfort zone. If you do this your weekend will be so much better and be filled with unforgettable memories that will make that con so specia for you and all your freinds:)

One thing I like to do is after i invite people to my room, I will go through everyone and check to see if anyone has any medical situations in which someone requires a bed, like a bad back or anything, they get a bed first. Then people who are okay sleeping with that person and the person is okay with it, they're sleeping in the same bed. And anyone who wants to bring a friend from the con back to the room, you have to ask everyone else and if they say no, don't complain. I also like to bring snacks. And my room is usually a mix between chill, workshop (in case a costume breaks so I can fix it or con crunch) and sleep /shower.
2:29 i had a friend who told me i was "bogus as fuck" for not letting him stay in my room for free and i was paying 100 a night in that room. He wasn't able to afford it because he was partying during the semester at college and i went and got a job during my semester at college so i could afford the con. Made me so pissed when he said that.

Tip if you're staying for quite a bit (I'll be staying in Denver for five days for my next con), look for short term apartments. You can often find a nice place for cheap. I found a two bedroom apartment that'll cost us about $360, way cheaper than trying to find a hotel room of a similar size, plus we'll have privacy and access to a proper kitchen.

Oh man- as a former homestuck cosplayer I have to say, if your costume requires a lot of body paint, go to the bathroom and wipe it off immediately after arriving back to your room for the night, and wipe down all the surfaces later. It isn't fair to the staff to have to clean up bathtubs and sinks full of gray or blue or what have you just because you were lazy, thats just gross and impolite. Plus, even if you seal it, body paint infects everything. I guarantee you that if you dont take proper measures it will get on more than just easily cleanable porcelain surfaces.

In my con+hotel experience I found it is always good to have small (5-6 bite) non-perishable snacks like granola bars or little fruit cups at cons because there never seems to be enough time to eat a larger meal. Also, always use the buddy system whenever you can, especially at night . Make sure you know where your people are going to be just in case something happens (I was at an event when my bag was stolen and it had my phone, wallet, room key etc. in it.) Even though I didn't have my buddy, we had a designated spot to meet up at in case one of us didn't check in by a certain time so everything ended up ok. Be safe and watch out for each other!

I've ran into problems with people dropping last minute (i had a friend get hospitalized right before a con) or people who had a room but it was canceled (convention time is crazy for a hotel, so there are usually a couple people who don't have a place to stay). This always messes up payments and what people owe. My tip is that you ALWAYS have to follow up and getting your money back. Most of the times, the people you're staying with don't want to cheat you, so if you follow up polity about people owning money, then you'll probably end up paying what you should.

I really like how you "take care" of minors. I think it's very important to be respectful of the law and make sure young people are comfortable. Then again, the moment I remember minors in the US is 21 and not 18 I'm always surprised. It's so weird to remind myself that, if I should ever go to the US this or next year, I'm not allowed to drink even though its normal in Germany to drink light alcohol like beer from the age 16 and up. I share rooms a lot (because of roller derby travel) and the biggest rule we try to follow is just not to be "that person" in the room or the carpool or whatever. As in, put yourself in someone else's shoes and if what you're doing is going to piss them off, either check with them or don't do it. Also, don't invite yourself into a room! I've had this happen a handful of times, where the 4 people on my team who almost always travel together get a room, and we end up with 2 more teammates assuming they can just crash with us! Plan ahead and don't dump yourself on other people (this has been a PSA)

I tend to be the den mother of the room. It's pretty stressful when you worry about money when in Charge of room but that's a great tip. I like to leave the room clean after we are ready to head out at the end of a weekend. And also a note thanking the hotel workers for putting up with everyone that attends.

This video makes me so happy! Yeah, when my three friends and I attended a small con last September we did most of these things-- I'll have to make a list for the next one! ^_^ But there was a room down the hall where people were partying and drinking and they invited us to join. Since we were all minors we all ran straight into our room and locked the door... Yeah, awkward O_O

Whenever I get a hotel room with people, I like to coordinate a sleep schedule with everyone in the room. We all sit down and look at panels some of us want to go to in the morning, and base our schedule off of that. That way, when an alarm goes off in the morning, everyone has to get up, so no one gets disturbed. I also like to stay with my roomies, or at least one of my roomies when walking around the convention, just as a personal, "I don't want to be left out" sort of thing. So far it's worked wonderfully.

I love this video! I work front desk as a supervisor on 2nd shift. A few things that you pointed out are spot on. Also depends on the area most Double bed rooms only allow a maximum of 4 people to the room. Do we check? it depends on how busy the hotel is and if we are receiving complaints. Also for those who attend Anime Central or any cons in the state of Illinois its 21 or older with a credit card. Rollaway beds and adjoining rooms are never promised and usually a first come first serve basis. Also when budgeting for a hotel make note that some hotels will hold an additional amount on your card as a security deposit/incidentals. Ask the hotel their policy on this it will save you a headache at check in. On that note my con group is 16 people. ACen 2014 i had 4 rooms under my name. I made sure i had everyone's payments a month before con (some hotels take a deposit at that time *cough* Hyatt*cough*) and that is the best time to make sure you have your room full. Things do happen always have an emergency fund if someone does need to drop out at the last second.

I've never needed a hotel room in the past because my local con is the largest con in the state and I'm too poor to travel but lately I've been considering getting a hotel room because every year I get shit from everybody who drives me (don't own a car), even if it's just once. It's also irritating having to put on my costume before doing to the con because sitting in a car in full costume can be pretty scary sometimes. My problem is all of my friends that go that con are local residents too and I doubt any of them have the money to help cover the room because none of them have jobs. That and I have a very complicated circle of friends and everyone hates at least one of my other friends (sometimes all of them) so I know drama will not be checked at the door even if I tell them to. I once tried rooming with one friend because I know her mom is pretty generous during the con and I figured she could pay but then she moved and I was left a sitting duck. Struggle too legit.

I would also add my own comment about encouraging people not to over pack. Hotel room space is limited, and when people bring way more than they could possibly use, be it extra luggage or multiple "spare" costumes or food, that room gets taken up pretty quick. It also means it takes longer to pack out of the hotel room, and if you're leaving the same day the convention ends that means either staying up later the night before putting stuff into the car or delaying when you can get to the convention that morning. So yeah, make sure you bring everything you need, but try not to bring too much more than that.

Something I've always wanted to know is how cosplayers transport some big cosplay items! And I'm not talking about tips like "make them where you can take them apart" or, actually, that's a good tip for newer cosplayers, but I mean some items that just can't or are not designed with this in mind. I've seen some crazy things and wonder how people bring them in when they can't be broken apart or if they are still a large thing to lug around even when broken down!

When traveling in the hallways shut the FUDGE up! Have consideration for others when moving though the hotel. Others might not be there for the con. They might be there on business reasons and need to sleep during the day, might be there for medical reasons and are recovering from a surgery and need the hotel staff to assist them as they recover, or just might be a person who suffers from severe migraines trying to rest in a dark room until it subsides. Don't be the person who runs, jumps, yells, slams doors and acts 50 shades the fool in the halls without consideration for the other guests who paid just as much as you did for your room, perhaps more if you're sharing. Behave yourself when moving though the rest of the hotel too. Some hotels have started to boycott con goers and won't take them in during a con because of damages that happened the previous years. All because a small group of people ruined it for everyone. Don't be that person or group of people who act like 10 year old boys without parental supervision and go around wrecking the place. The rule is, leave things as clean as when you found it. The staff is busy enough without having to do extra work. Doesn't take but a second to put your rubbage in the trash. This will be my first con. I'll be paying full price for my room and sharing it only with my husband. Watching KZbin videos like this one I learned what a "Furry" is. For you fur suitors, to each their own, but if I catch you howling at 2:00am outside my door I will be doing my best to have you kicked out of the hotel. Even if that means I have to compensate the hotel for the expense of your room, the money they would loose by having you removed. You want to howl at the moon, great, fine, find a location where you're not disturbing anyone. I like my sleep. I get cranky when I get woken up for dumb reasons. I can't be the only one. I'm shocked at the number of howling in hotel videos are on here. (Hotels with balconies are nearby other rooms so balconies also apply.) Anyone who is old enough to stay in a hotel without a parental supervision shouldn't need to be told these rules. You should be old enough to show consideration for others. Be a little thoughtful. And leave things as clean as you found it.

This is very helpful! I plan on running a club and one thing I plan on doing with the group is going to conventions. I have other rules regarding homework and stuff but I'm glad I found this as well!

What I like to do and let my con roomies know is to try and bring at least one of their own pillows and a blanket if possible. That way if someone forgets there's or doesn't have one then can have the spares or ones from the beds that won't be used! And it's always a little more comfortable with your own pillow

Amy: My friends and I have a rule that everyone has their own laundry hamper so that clothes are not scattered all over the room and we don't have to separate the laundry before we leave. We also have a rule that everyone must shower once a day.

I've been saving for a Doll cosplay from the Book Of Circus ark of Black Butler, which I've found for (has positive reviews) $120.47. You've helped me plan ahead and learn how to budget on buying things that won't come in the set! Not to mention planning for a con that I will be going to in September!

I haven't booked hotels or anything for cons, I always room with friends. But In all honesty, I would say that never have more people in a room than there are beds / people that can share a bed. It is better (and more likely with hotel's policy) to get two rooms, than to get one and cram some people on a bed and others on a floor. Typically, there are two beds and a pull out sofa / couch. So two people per bed, and two on the couch. Also, it helps if it is with friends who don't have an issue sharing the same bed. And if you must do the diddly with your S/O... please do it in the bed that you and your SO share and clean up... please. Either that or hop into the shower / tub. And please do it when your other friends are out of the room... not when they're sleeping, but when they are actually out of the room.

I always hate it when everyone but maybe one or more don't show up for the room and we try to contact them and they ignore us and then that means everyone has to chip in more money. Like this past Katsucon a guy in our room's gf was gonna come but he didn't tell any of us she wasn't coming till the next day so we had to come up with more money and I didn't come with much so always make sure you bring more money then you plan to.

One thin that I like is to have people with the same sleep schedule. Being in the same room as someone who likes to go to sleep super late/super early sucks for everyone including themselves and it leads to grumpiness more often than not

This is just a bed situation that we had when I was on a school trip with a friend a another girl who I had never met before (but became friends with at the airport and stuff), there were three of us and two beds so naturally everybody likes space so every night we would rotate (different hotels almost every day) so one day one person would get a bed to themselves and the other two shared a bed and the opposite happened the next day! :) It was a blast!

Always check the age you need to be for your hotel! Different states have different age caps. For example In New Jersey you must be 21 to book a hotel room, while in Maryland you need to be 18. Also booking a hotel even if you are just REALLY considering going to a con is a also a good step. You can always cancel a hotel up to about 2 days before check in. Some hotels don't even require a deposit when booking the room. It's a much better plan then doing what I did and scrambling to find a hotel room and paying more than anticipated.
@HallowqueenCrafting9 жыл бұрын
Digix Most hotels, especially ones belonging to big chains will have a policies page, which will include the age required for booking, and deposit policies, and yes it does vary sometimes wildly not only from state to state but hotel to hotel - the state may mandate that 18 year old can book rooms, but the hotel doesn't want kids who are not old enough to drink booking their hotel, so they don't allow under 21. Also, WATCH THE CANCELLATION POLICY. Not all hotels you can cancel up to 2 days before check in, and different rates even within the same hotel have different cancellation policies. Some really great rates are really great because they're fully prepaid, non refundable non cancellable, which means if you can't go you're still out the whole amount.

Girl speaking of friends giving you money. One year we had twelve (yes I know) in a room (so three people paid for one day each for the four days). Three of the people we didn't really know except the one girl was the former anime club leader in our old high school. The day of the convention those three hadn't paid yet, but the club leader promised they would have it by Saturday, so we only paid for thurs-sat and the hotel said we could pay for Sunday on Saturday. Come Saturday she still hadn't given us the money so we try to find her. During the morning she kept avoiding us and shooing us away while she volunteered at the con. Come Saturday night we finally get her to admit that she had no intentions of paying because her bf and her were supposed to get money from illegally selling badges (which he got arrested for and was in jail from Thurs-Fri morning) and wanted her money for personal spending. She was basically trying to con us for a free room and leave us without one the last day. We did end up getting the money from her, and the last guy in her trio felt bad because he didn't even know she was trying this (he had apparently given her the money for his share ahead of time).

I was stupid on my first few cons by staying in the room on my own...yeah the financial side of me was asleep clearly. Never stayed in a hotel since but that's down to me only doing 1 day at cons now where it's easy train journey to. But I know what guidelines to follow when I finally get to do my tour of America and its cons.

Do I spy with my little eye an "Art of Transformers" book? :D Which cartoon series is your favorite? :) On a separate note more involved with the video's main topic, I'd also recommend taking advantage of ice that hotels provide to you for free. The reason for this is that I have found in the past that you will guzzle water like a camel at such conventions, especially if it takes place during the Summer in a warm part of the country. These ice cubes can help you save money by waiting until they melt and drinking it, or using it for cooling to help avoid heat exhaustion if your cosplay would allow you to put little ice cubes on your neck, and down your shirt, or socks.

My first hotel for an anime con was where I shared 1 room, with 2 queen beds, and 5 people. We were a group of people cosplaying as black butler characters(I was Mad Hatter-The Undertaker from Ciel In Wonderland). We all pitched in for the hotel costs, and we had a parent with us since I'm only 13!!

Me and my friends go a little overboard but not really. xD We've been screwed over by people before when it comes to transportation, hotel rooms, badges, etc so we've set a few rules. - We set deadlines for payments. We usually plan for the con 8 months out. Just decided if we're gonna go, how much it's gonna be and set up payment plans. The final payment due 2 months before the con. -We have contracts. We make people sign contracts to protect the group as a whole. That way they know that the person who is in charge of the room, buying the badges, distributing gas money etc, isn't using it for drugs or hookers or whatever and the person paying is dedicated to taking the trip and not dropping out a week before we leave. Causing everyone in the group to pay extra. The contract also states not to bring any strangers into the room, whoever broke it will pay for it, if you get arrested, you're on your own etc.
@davidlewis51893 жыл бұрын
Now if I was doing this I would also.. 1. Assuming I am hosting the room/suite and I have 5 other people, I would also book the room, divide the price, and tell everyone that they have until say 2 weeks before to pay their share. I wouldn't hound any of my group members, but if they haven't paid or haven't paid their portion off as it gets cliser to the cutoff date, I will make it a point to contact them and make sure that everything is alright and they are still going. Otherwise they aren't getting in said room and the money they paid will be refunded.. 2. Now assuming everyone in the group has paid their portion and deadline has passed, I as group leader would try to set up a Skype/Zoom Meeting like maybe a week before the actual Con. To introduce ourselves ( if we aren't familiar with each other), try and figure out what exactly is everyone bringing in, and if need be, maybe figure out room arrangements beforehand.

I went to Animethon this year, which was held at a college, and me and my two sisters were staying in one of the dorms. It was supposed to be fun and happy, and we had enough money to pay for the room and enjoy the weekened. WELP, my stupid older sister decided to spend all of the hotel money we had set away. Then she acted entitled to boss us around regarding the room and felt the need to complain the entire weekend. I hated it so much, ruined the entire con for me because I had to use all my money to pay for the room.

Put your stuff away EVERY time you change! Have a dirty garment bag next to your suitcase! Nothing is more frustrating when unpacking and telling your S/O all about the con and finding your roommate's boyfriends underroo's mixed in with your stuff!!! Plus less stress when leaving/checking out if you just have to toss your makeup bag in your suitcase and zip it up!
