Incredibly informative!! Its really interesting to hear how other people budget and how much education costs at different schools, being open about it definitely helps inform other people's decisions! Thank you for sharing!

Oh my god, thank you for this video! It is too often said that you "shouldn't pay for a Masters" or that "you should be able to do a Masters for free!" And that isn't always the case, like at all.
@KaelynGraceApple4 жыл бұрын
Emily Rasch if you can manage to get it funded, do! It unfortunately wasn’t an option for me and I don’t regret it 💕 it got me where I needed to go
@JamesJoyce123 жыл бұрын
no shade to this presenter but you should not be paying for your Masters or for Your PhD - top programs for top students are fully funded - and these are the folks that get TT positions when they graduate - otherwise - if you want do it for fun and almost no chance of getting hired somewhere - then go ahead

I love that you are sharing your student loan debt with confidence. Loans and debt scare me, but I am transferring to UCLA for undergrad this fall. After I plan to continue my education with graduate school. So loans are in my future! Thank you for showing me (us) the possibility of thriving even with debt.

Taking on loans is a daunting and scary prospect but so long as you go in with your eyes open, I think it becomes another hurdle rather than a mountain

I did PhD in Hong Kong, and it is basically free! In Hong Kong, we have a tuition fee of $42,100 HKD ($5432 USD) per year. As PhD fellowship provide an allowance of $30,760 per year, most students would have enough to cover tuition fee, rent, and daily expenditure.

That’s wonderful that they have programming and financing for PhD students! I feel very lucky to have a similar opportunity at Yale!

Your investment did pay off. Oxford paved the way for Yale! Many 'is a graduate degree worth it?' videos focus too much on the cost and debt. While this is justified, the abstraction of turning this into leverage for an Ivy League PhD is almost never touched on. Kudos for your far sightedness, future Dr. Kaylean!

I'm going to Oxford for my masters this fall and this was immensely helpful because nothing is transparent on their website(s)!!! Also so frustrating because the university, the college, and your course all have information in different places. Thank you!

Thank you for being so open about your finances. I think many people go into PhD programmes not knowing what they're getting into. The academic job market is absolutely terrible, and anyone who hasn't had a tough conversation with themselves about money should not be doing a PhD. All the best to you, cheers from Singapore!

Glenn Ong I 100% agree! I hope to make more videos like this in order to make what it takes to go to grad school more transparent

Many PHD programs are fully funded.
@MrZepharus4 жыл бұрын
@@thalblankson4002 Indeed! Unfortunately, this is mostly true only for the US/Canada. Many others go to the UK and Australia for self- or partially-funded programs, not to mention many others who pursue PhDs in less common destinations. There are way too many PhD candidates/grads than there are job openings. In my field of history, there are even grads with Ivy League PhDs and book contracts that still don't have secure employment. Getting into a funded program is just a first step in an increasingly uphill battle :/

@@MrZepharus Not true the whole Europe is the same except the UK. UK is different. Germany I know provide full funded PHD programs as well.

Great video! This is more of a random question, but do you happen to be a member of any Associations? For example, there is the National Women’s Studies Association and the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP) among many others. I’ve been wondering if I should become an official member of one of these organizations and start paying dues. However, I want to be sure that it would be worth it in the long run and I also wonder if membership to one in your chosen field looks good on a PhD application.
@KaelynGraceApple4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! I am part of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic and the American Historical Association. I plan on joining several more as a PhD student. I don’t think they are ‘necessary’ or ‘helpful’ for your applications but being a member and attending the conferences is! I attended a SHEAR conference last summer before applying and several faculty members I interviewed with for my PhD were there so I got to meet them in person before reaching out via email! I love conferences and highly recommend joining organizations so you can attend their programming and apply to become a speaker!

Thanks a lot for this informative video! I am going to Oxford in the fall for my masters and I am also an international student (Canada). I wanted to know regarding banks in the UK to transfer your money from USD to pounds (in my case CAD to pounds). Did you open a bank account there or managed to pay directly from your american account and was charged the current exchange rate? If you did move your money to the UK which one did you chose?
