Thank you for the info. For Texas another item to consider is insurance for house, auto and an umbrella policy. The cost has more than doubled. Insurance companies are not insuring houses here with an asphalt roof that is 20 years old or older. Right now we are at $9600 a year. Best of luck, Cindy

Great video. What about comparing the health system. I live in California but would like to know more about the health systems. Not just the cost

Thanks for watching. Our experience has been here but we’ve really only had routine appointments. But the health care system in Portugal and in the U.S. are ranked as tied for 23rd in the world. Best of luck!

Great video. One observation regarding property taxes in Portugal. I have an apartment that I bought in Jan 2023 for just a little less than 367k The property tax (IMI) for 2023 cost me 399.94 euros because for tax purposes the apartment is valued at 133,311.70 euros. This gap between market value and the value for tax purposes is very common here (I'd say it happens with EVERY property). Another example, a beach apartment with a value of at least 500k is valued at 83,737.50 and pays 334.95 euros per year. So I'd reduce those 1200 USD mentioned in this video to around 400k euros.

Thanks and you are correct. Our actual property tax here in Portugal is about 0.2%. We just couldn’t find any good data on how the spread between market value and assessed value is determined, so we took the more conservative approach. Thanks for watching!

@@TheUnretirees There is no "spread between market value and assessed value" in the sense of there being a logical one with a clear rule. The tax authorities determine the tax value based on some (old) legal rules that bear little relation with present day market value. The older the property, and the higher the valuation a certain area has benefitted from in recent years the bigger the gap.

Does your cost of living figure include fuel, utilties, ? What does it cover. Thank you for doing this.

Thanks for watching! We used expatistan.com and I believe in their calculations they include a wide range of expenses for their cost of living numbers, including utilities, petrol, etc.
