Good comparison, What you described without saying the word is planned obsolescence. A city is designed to be costly, with inadequate public transport means reliance on car and cabs and all the economy that surrounds it. There are fewer people out walking, manipulation of social behaviour. It is induced by conscious planning. Other reasons are superficial, crime is there as much in other cities. No one talk about it because, if the city become like europe, then other industry will lose out on a lot. Think about it, you cannot do anything in your place, without owning a car.
