One of my two comments appears to have vanished, but I forgot to ask if the cost of living stats was pre or post hurricane Beryl because Beryl appears to become the new Covid, as an explanation for astronomical increases in the cost of all things.

Would be interesting to see comparisons with other countries with more similar demographics… like some other Caricom nations. NY and Canada are in the middle of historic immigrant surges, which will skew the housing availability and costs. There are also safety nets in place in the first world countries, that I am not aware of in Jamaica. There is a very robust welfare system in first world that provides food and shelter to those in need and are sober enough to request assistance. To present Jamaica as an overall more affordable society to live in, would make it illogical for so many residents to be jumping at the opportunity to migrate out of Ja. Would also like to see some data on the prevalence and impact of praedial larceny on the cost of food and agricultural products in Jamaica. Planting a garden in a gated community or upper income enclave is different from most of the regions inhabited by average people.

@faithm2535 Thanks for engage; some brilliant points raised! We will definitely add the Caricom nations suggestion to our list. 💎 It would be great if Jamaica had a more built out social welfare service. However, it has a few programmes in place that are making some impact on varying circumstances. The data was statistical analysis. Nevertheless, Jamaicans migrate for a range of reasons. There is the factor of family filing for them, going to study, going for marital reasons, going for employment. Although the unemployment in Jamaica is reducing and civil servants wages are significantly better than 5 years ago, there are always people looking for ways to improve their lives and many see migration as the quickest and easiest option. For several persons who took that path, they have expressed their experiences; many of which realise that the grass isn't really greener on the other side. Praedial larceny, weather, pests, irrigation, demand and supply, transportation to market, many middle persons between farmers and consumers are only some of the factors that impact on the price index of ground provision. Please explain your perspective for why there would be a difference of gardening in gated communities, suburbs and other communities. 🤔🧐

@ exactly what ‘lane’ did you relegate her to? What other qualifications aside from education, interest, and perhaps YOUR permission, do you believe is required to analyze or engage in a discussion of some statistical data?

@@LifewiddiJamFams I’m definitely not advocating for Jamaica to become a welfare state for able bodied individuals. There is plenty of unskilled to minimally skill work, such as cleaning up the ubiquitous garbage and poorly maintained sidewalks/water drainage that could be done under workfare programs. Most of the agricultural lands that could be producing enough foods to impact inflation, but is being intentionally left unused due to issues surrounding uncontrolled praedial larceny, are in more rural communities, not the more secure and well protected upscale or gated communities.
