Families with children need to include school fees and auxiliaries school items (books, lunch, trips, school bus fee etc) expected for children which also varies depending on the type / calibre of school they attend. Also it’s worth registering with a hospital for medical care (some private hospitals have pseudo insurance schemes); however, a good idea it to purchase an annual platinum family multi-trip travel insurance in the West to be on the safe side😉.

@@thenigeriannomad What do you estimate the monthly COL would be on the island for a single lady who is part bougie? 🤔
@josephbrown15733 жыл бұрын
Very good analysis. For the people questioning why they are still living in the West , well you need to generate the income. Jobs paying this kind of money in Nigeria are difficult to get .The average Nigerian makes about $100 /month. It is cheap if you make money in the West but can you transfer your job/income? Obviously if you are retired and have pension income that would be ideal. If you can work online , if you have some kind of passive income. To a teacher in America this looks cheap ,but you could not afford this lifestyle working as a teacher in Nigeria !
@thenigeriannomad3 жыл бұрын
The points you make are very valid. The people i see doing well here that come from the WEST are the people who own businesses, have their source of income overseas or have a very well paying job in Nigeria but you are right. those Jobs are not readily available that pays that high, they do exist though and they require special skillset.

You forgot BRT. Some Main landers park their cars and take BRT to work on the Island- average ticket is N300 which is less than a dollar. For those coming from abroad, I'll advise them to live in a service estate on the Island where all services like 24/7 light, clean water, security, cleaning of the estate etc are provided though at extra cost; but it's very convenient and nice. Also some landlords are accepting 6 months rent down payment bcos of COVID 19

I wanted to figure out who could afford this life style working in Nigeria .I used just the mainland as living on the Island is like living in Manhattan! Not where the middle class usually live . Using the Median salary a teacher in Nigeria makes about of 250,000 naira/ month or $656. A doctor in Nigeria makes about 650,000 naira /month or $1706. Also let us assume that these are two income families, so the amount might be larger if the wife is working . You did not include school fees , or medical . I just got these figures off the internet so I dont know how accurate they are . I did work in Nigeria but that was long ago and the exchange rate is so much higher today. The GDP/capita is $2229/ year, which is $185,or 70,770 naira /month.
@thenigeriannomad3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the people who are doing okay and work in Nigeria have multiple sources of income to sustain themselves in Nigeria is my observation to be honest.
@josephbrown15733 жыл бұрын
@@thenigeriannomadActually based on your estimate of $400-$800/ month, both of these professions could live on the mainland, if these salary numbers are correct . Even more so if they are a couple and there is a second income coming in, and Nigerians always have side hustles! It is encouraging to see that the Nigerian middle class can afford to live a relatively good life in Nigeria!

I don’t think banana island is that cheap. A four bedroom apartment in 1004 estates is about five million naira on average for just rent

Nigerians are very positive about their education, why is infrastructure, like water and electricity so poor in the country?

what is the average wage or salary of a Lagosian. The numbers sounds really go for people out of the country but it super expensive for Nigerians.
@thenigeriannomad3 жыл бұрын
The wage is very low in Nigeria. The range is wide but I know some people make $300 - $600 a month. off course some people earn a lot more depending on their role at their job.

Thanks for sharing Bayo this was very helpful. I have a question. As a Nigerian born in the diaspora, what's the deal with National Youth Service? Do we have to complete it in order to get a local job or start a business?
@thenigeriannomad3 жыл бұрын
you are welcome. this is a great question. I have often wondered what the significance of it is. I don't think you need it to get a local job or start a business though

You don’t have to complete NYSC to start a business however, you must complete it to get a job in company in Nigeria whether private or government. You also must have it if you ever intend to be in politics. If you graduated before 30, you must do the NYSC regardless of whatever age you are right now. If you graduated after 30, you can apply for an exemption certificate and get it moving. Now, you can get away with working for a company in Nigeria without doing NYSC however, they can’t hire you as a permanent staff. You would reflect in the records as a contract staff. Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

@@adonye1306 wow, thanks for taking the time to write this. This is so helpful. Blessings to you 🙏🏿. Final question, how long does it take to complete it?
@adonye13063 жыл бұрын
@@otkeeplearning You're welcome. It takes a year. There's a 3 week period where you go to a camp in the state you're posted to. Then after that you're sent to an office or a school in that state for about 11 months.

Hi, I have a boyfriend in Lagos Nigeria for 2 years now. I live in the States and of course I help him out with the expenses monthly. I send him like $1500/ mo. and he still says that it's not enough to live from. It's just him in the house. He says that food prices has increased tremendously.... and he does not drive. He takes Uber everywhere but I am getting tired☹️. He says that the exchange rate are much lower that N380 at times that you talk about. I don't understand all of that, but I know that I can't continue like this. Any advice?☹️
@thenigeriannomad3 жыл бұрын
My Advice is that if you cannot continue like that ? then don't :) He will find a way.

@@thenigeriannomad Thank you very much for replying back to me. When I said I couldn't continue, I didn't mean to not help him, but...that's a lot of money for him to yet complain of him not being able to survive. I have a trip planned for June to be with him, hopefully I will learn for myself how things are there.

Thank you for the responses. I have thought over things very carefully and I have made that decision to leave him. With the amount of money he's receiving from me every month, he should be living like a king (not to offend anyone). He should have a business, a car and everything else that he needs. The hardest thing to accept is TRUTH ☹️. I'm being used most definitely.💔
