I’d never want to move to London. I was born and raised in south London in my early years. You have highlighted the main issues I have with it. Exorbitant rents, young people priced out of buying property. A lot of London outside of central London is run down too. To put into context, I live in Brighton and paying slightly more than the £800 a month for your room in Southwark, I am renting a one bed flat in a central location (I think Brighton property prices are too high as well btw).

I used to live in North London close to the Archway Tube Station and found a great deal for a room costing £700 with all bills included. The room was TINY but still I had a small garden at the back of the house that made up for the extra space you need (especially in Summer). Also in London unless you have a really high wage just forget about buying your own house. Just check the cost of a three bedroom with a small garden and see how much you need to earn each month. Council tax is a pain - some boroughs are double a neighbouring borough. I live in Westminster but if I was in Camden a few streets away I would pay almost double. It is a pain to figure out as rent might be cheaper in one area but the council tax pushes it over budget. You do know that a TV license is needed for watching live TV and the BBC. If you only use a TV for Netflix/ Amazon/ other streaming service or watching catch up on ITV or Chanel 4 ect - not including the BBC - you can cancel the licence. Saves you a bit of money each year. STAHP! Everyone can SAVE £160 a year: You DON'T have to have a TV license just because you have a TV. The license permits you to watch LIVE tv and BBC channels on **any** device. I dont have a TV license. I dont watch the BBC channels nor any live TV at my address. So, if you're not using the service on any device, don't pay the licence fee. Some people fear they will be "inspected" and harassed for not having a license. Untrue. Ive not needed one for 3 yrs, and Ive had just one annual letter reminding me I cant watch/stream BBC or live programmes. I have a TV, laptop, PS4 and mobile that I **could** use for this purpose, but it's NOT policed. That would be quite impossible! TV licensing enforcers can ask to see your setup, but having a TV or other devices doesn't automatically prove you're viewing BBC shows, so they really don't bother to police it. They can't prove you're watching BBC or live TV unless they're looking through your window as you do it. If they do that by sneaking onto your property, it's illegal trespass and voyeurism. There is no magical radar that can detect live TV or BBC streaming in your home. That was just a 90s advertising trick to scare people into compliance. They cant enter your home if you refuse, and more to the point, they cant prove you're watching BBC unless you're dumb enough to have it on right there, or streaming a live match and throwing a party they walked in on. Rediculous scenarios. So don't pay for a license if you're not using BBC or live programmes. Also, the license doesnt cover the TV or the individual, it covers the address. So you can still go watch live sports at a friend's house who has a license. Now go decide what to spend that £160 on. Enjoy! 😉

council tax circa £1,200 per year and rising year on year obviously varies by bands not £39. Single occupancy 25% discount. Gas and electric have standing charges as compulsory cost, VAT5%, then usage. For gas ft3 converted in kWh. Gas is cheaper than electricity per kWh. Winter bills are higher. Water either measured in litres or has a rateable value if they can’t install meter. You don’t need monthly pass because you don’t travel every single day in a month i.e. you loose that paid day as void. Use £4.5 bus valid 24 hrs only pay for day you need. Works cheaper. Hello, lovely video! I loved the details used, they give a good idea of the cost of life. I have visited London in the past as a tourist and I loved it. I currently live in Toronto, and it seems to be much more expensive here, even if the Canadian dollar is weaker. Grocery for 2 people in Toronto can add up to $500-600 a month, cellphone bill $80-90, rent is obsolete...$2000-2350 for 1 bedroom apartment. Transit around $156, an average meal for 2 people with 1 drink each is $75-100 I think Toronto avarege salary is around $65k before taxes. So I don't really know how to compare given the difference in currency. But I would love one day to move permanently to London.

This expenses are not realistic. A girl would spend more than 960 pounds per year for cosmetics, perfumes, makeup, hairdresser, clothing, shoes and accessories. Significantly more if you need to suit up for work in the office. Cost of laptop or phone and other gadgets is not included just basic line rental. Monthly travel card for all London zones is 260. Other expenses weren't included - house items, cookware, cutlery, vacuum cleaner. There is literally no money included for going out - museums galleries, cinemas theatre. Drinking in pubs and bars is extremely expensive - 6 pounds for a beer to 20 pounds per cocktail. All these expenses listed were in case you share a house so you live with strangers, have to queue to the bathroom in the morning etc. Realistic expenses for a small house are 250 pounds council tax, 80 pounds electricity, 100 gas, 40 water per month. I estimate about 300 per adult on groceries at tesco, sainsbury or morrison if you don't want to eat just plain basics or have no washing up liquid soap and shampoo or house cleaning stuff. Also 40k may be the average but that includes Russian and Arab multi billionaires that reside in Mayfair as well as tens of thousands bankers on eye-watering salaries and bonuses. 40k is a realistic salary for a manager with 10-15 years of experience, but entry jobs for young people are often not even full time and I suspect 18-25k per year gross being more realistic. Unless you are in IT or other well paid field. London is hugely expensive! As a family of 2+2 small kids living a modest life in a 3 bedroom house on the outskirts of London, our total cost of living is 50-55k per year. Single 20-30 years old sharing in central London and enjoying reasonably social life - that's more like min 20k per year. You spend much less now because of lock downs and covid, once this is over your costs will go significantly up plus the brexit and covid inflation...

We stayed in an AirBnb a few weeks ago by Russel Square, so pretty much as central as it gets. It was tiny, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and a kitchen in the space of our back room in our house in Manchester. The owner said they pay £1200 a month for it. The area was nice, the connections were great (being right next to Russel Square tube station) but for that much for such a tiny place is crazy! Travel in London however is incredibly cheap compared to much of the rest of the UK. It's the only thing that's cheap there, even by non-London standards!
@jamesphoenix18502 жыл бұрын
There are two major points that aren’t considered in this, firstly, even split between 4, £10 for gas and electricity is ridiculously low and simply not realistic, even a year ago. Secondly, looking at the London average salary is very misleading, particularly given that is across all age groups and using a straight average will be significantly inflated by the people in London making huge salaries, it makes more sense to look at the median salary by age group which for 18-35 year olds is about £31,000.

The UK economy is too heavily centralised in London. That is the root cause of the high cost of living in London. Demand for both housing and commercial premises in London is too high, and the only way to bring it down to more manageable levels is if we decentralise the UK economy, increasing the economic significance of cities such as Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Swansea, Glasgow and Belfast. Look at Germany, for instance. Germany's economy is very decentralised. Cities such as Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Munich, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Hamburg are very significant to the country's economy, and Berlin is significantly cheaper than London.

What isn't mentioned is that those flats you showed that were in the 400-800 pound range were probably in a very un-aesthetic building on a very un-aesthetic street, and maybe also were in an area with just an overground or poor tube access. It’s just inside the M25, the motorway that surrounds “Greater” London and is part of the commuter belt. Part of my company was relocated from Hull (in the North, with admittedly some of the cheapest housing in the country) to Watford and although I didn’t have to move, I looked into the costs of moving to a similar sized home. I live in an end of block, 3 bed terraced house about 3 miles from the city centre, and my house is worth around £110k. A similar house in Watford would cost at least £350k. Well, let's be realistic, people who will be working on minimum wage will not choose an 800 pound rent. You can probably find even cheaper rent than what you showed, a bit further from the center of the city. Even around 400 pounds. Also subtracting a few of the luxury subscriptions you had, and probably eating out less, you could end up with maybe more than 500 pounds left at the end of the month if you work on minimum wage. You can set something aside, and maybe even afford some "small luxuries" yourself. Thanks for this video, you showed us it is really not that impossible to live in London. Even on a minimum wage.
