#CostOfLivingInOslo #MoreViews #HowExpensiveIsOslo
I remember when we were deciding about moving to Oslo, we found it hard to get this information easily. We didn't have any friend, family or support system here to guide us through. So, I thought of making a video about this. I have spoken from my experience of living in Oslo and tried to give an overall estimate on how much one might need to spend when living in Oslo, which still is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Hope you find this video helpful.

We are a couple living in Oslo. We we are able to survive on 2000 NOK (food only) per month if being a bargain hunter and avoid restaurants . This requires the following: Only one hot meal a day as Norwegians do, , buy in special discount stores Havaristen and Holdbart (not all items and offer changes from day to say) , avoid alcohol., use, buy cheap brands like First Price whenever possible, make use of 50% discount on items about to expire, be aware of special offers (Kiwi unlike other shops hide good offers) spei eat what is on offer and never be tempted to buy when the price is high. Without bargain hunting a couple will usually end up paying from 4000 to 5000 NOK a month

Two comments; if you are a student in Oslo, you pay only 188 NOK per month at the gym-which is dirt cheap. That is, if you train at any of the centres run by SIO-the Student Union in Oslo. One of the centres has a swimming pool, so you don`t have to pay extra to go to a public swimming pool, which could set you back 100 NOK for one training session. Transport: last time I checked, a 30 day pass for all public transport in Oslo is cheaper if you are a student AND under 30. I pay 814 NOK per month-unlimited travel within the city boundaries. However, students under 30 supposedly pay only 450 . Also, if you are Indian and feeling homesick, there are a few excellent Indian restaurants here in Oslo, check out "Mister India", or "Der Peppern Gror", which serves some really good Indian food. Namaste from Oslo.

So, Is 28k NOK/month after tax is sufficient to live in Oslo for an indian couple and a kid (under 2 years)?
@priyanka_wali
@priyanka_wali 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s sufficient. You’ll be hardly saving anything at all. You’ll HAVE to rent a 2BHK, by law, since you have a kid. Kids need a separate room here. It will cost you at least 12-13k, if you choose a location in outskirts. Add groceries 5-6k. Utilities another 2k. Transportation 1.5k. These will be the bare minimum expenses.

@@priyanka_wali ok. So i forgot to mention that, this salary is of Phd in university of oslo. So, saving won't matter much. And Probably they will offer students housing. Also we are vegetarian and dont drink at all. Will these factors make any difference?
@priyanka_wali
@priyanka_wali 3 жыл бұрын
@@npnatu what I have cited is excluding recreational/leisure expenses like drinking, eating out etc. Groceries are expensive in Norway, irrespective of veg or non-veg preferences. If lodging is being taken care of, seems doable. Else I’m not positive.

So is there any place you recommend to get a comfortable 2 bedroom flat with a decent price?
@priyanka_wali
@priyanka_wali 3 жыл бұрын
East side is cheaper than the west side. However, some people find west side nicer. It depends on your individual preferences and budget. I recommend searching on Finn.no (open it on google chrome) to get a good idea. It has quite a lot search options. You can put filters like size of the apartment, number of rooms, neighborhoods etc and figure out best options at present in the market.

@@priyanka_wali thanks for your reply. Could I perhaps ask you how much do you both spend each month? Like in total ^^ and also I'm really interested in eating outside as well (we are already used to here in Czech Republic), would you say that you can eat well by ordering food/eating outside once or twice a week or do you have to really buy the cheapest foods available? thanks.
@priyanka_wali
@priyanka_wali 3 жыл бұрын
@@AkariLadon2 Norway isn't like most countries. Groceries here are expensive. Once you are here, you'll figure it out. Even ordering food regularly is not possible as minimum charges per dish plus delivery charges again add upto a lot. The maximum expenditure we incur as a couple is mostly on groceries here in Norway. So is the story of most people. I have already mentioned each segment in the video. Everyone mostly cooks their meals in Norway. Eating out is widely restricted to once or twice a week, perhaps over the weekend.
@priyanka_wali
@priyanka_wali 3 жыл бұрын
@@AkariLadon2 as for buying the cheapest groceries, we keep shuffling the brands every now and then, trying to find best food deals and offers in different stores. Not necessarily the cheapest always. Its a personal preference as per a person's budget.
