hi finn, i live in angeles city and i spend a little bit more than you, 35k for my rent (nice condo with parking gym and pool), internet/cable 1750, electricity 1500, food (never cook at home, restaurant lunch and diner every day) probably around 25k, gasoline and tolls ( one 400cc scooter+big 900cc Kawasaki bike) around 5k...total of 70k per month on my own...whereas you live with sherlyn! before angeles city i've been living in makati for 4 years and my rent was around 50-55k a month so it's a lot cheaper for me here and very convenient with clark intl airport at 15mns from my place as i commute to europe every 6 weeks via doha with qatar airways or via dubai with emirates, i absolutely love it here! cheers mate.

Finn, great videos. I am living in Dauin (abt 20km outside Dumaguete). I have a fully furnished beach house, with hot water, aircon, 2 washing machines for clothes, free water, free WiFi, free cable all for 13,000php. Electricity (and I run it 24/7) cost about 4000php. There's several different food stores in Dumaguete and my food bill this month is about 10,000php. Fruits and veggies I usually buy from the markets and is very cheap. My wife's parents have a lot of mango trees, coconut trees, and papaya trees so we never have to pay for those. A loaf of bread costs 40pesos, and the Dauin market has really good veggies for low prices. We usually buy fish from Bacong market (they have a great selection). It's very close to us, and I can get enough fish for my wife, and her family for around 300php. We have a shrimp farm in Dauin and can grab 1kg or 2.2lbs of shrimp for 250php. There's plenty of housing for rent in this area. I like being outside the city because it's quiet, less traffic, less pollution, and the temp is much cooler than in Dumaguete. Still close enough to town that I can get there on the scooter in about 20-30mins depending on traffic. Oh, currently fuel is 49peso a liter on average. Where I live we have a clear view of Apo Island, and Siquijor Island. My total expenses (and I live very comfortsbly) for just the necessities is about 40,000php ($800/USD) a month.

Is it expensive to live in the Philippines? Yes and No. It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you chooses to live by. Living a simple life in the province is the cheapest way, the cost of living is cheap, the cost of acquiring your own house and lot is cheaper compared in Manila or the city proper. The food is cheaper too (specially in the local food market). Living in the city like Manila is different, it costs a lot. To have a descent place to stay is expensive. The food is expensive, transportation can be expensive. It's crowded, it's hot, but it is where all the modern world conveniences can be found, lavish life style, branded goods. Work and etc. It's just up to you.

I stay in Manila even though my wife has a home in province. Takes a hour to get real butter in the country. Plus it gets boring . The city is just more convenient. I stay in tondo it has a bad reputation but honestly I don't know why I have not had any more issues here than other places. I actually had more problems with people In Province

And its hard to love it when you are doing it for others. Even a work of charity (for others) must come from the heart, one’s own heart, heart felt. And your videos are among the most exceptional in how you capture the beauty of a place or thing or vent. By the way, my family’s roots are in Mindanao and Dumaguete. My grandmother was one of the first students at Silliman University in Dumaguete, when they only had one building. That building is now a museum and said to be haunted. It is eerie to stand at the bottom of the steps while looking to the upper flloors, which are always dark. We now have many generations of family members that have since attended there. But no, not me. I live in Northern California, where I grew up. And as a rebellious teen with an American mentality, I knew I would only get into trouble in Silliman’s conservative environment.

As most travelers know, it's never really about how much you make, it's about how much you need. Some expats arrive and are flying back a year later because they eat out constantly and spend $$$ for western foods they miss and well...that adds up fast. In addition, while the Philippines is much less taxing on the wallet than the United States, prices have been rising and it's not nearly the bargain it once was unless one really enjoys getting off the grid. Thanks to videos like yours Finn, it gives prospective expats and others a real glimpse into the true cost of living there and to an even greater degree, the VALUE of one's life when living there. I will say this much, for most westerners, you're going to need more patience than money. lol

Like 30 minutes waiting in line at a grocery store to pay, and watching the clerk counting your money four times in front of you (?), waiting in a long line at SM to pay for your items and watching others cut in line in front of you (very common), 30 plus minutes waiting at a bank, the whole day at a government office or 2 hours to travel 5 miles in traffic (yes, it would be faster to walk...I’ve done it in an hour and a half. But the heat). Patience is a valuable asset in the Philippines especially if your from the states.

Our apartment in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental is approximately 11000 pesos per month. Electric bill is around 4000 pesos with aircon running 24/7. The water bill is 250 pesos per month. Grocery bill is another 12000 pesos per month. The cost of living is very reasonable compared to when I lived in Cebu City. Compared to living in the USA it’s very low.

Well thanks for the info from your life around the expenses you have for living in the Philippines making awesome videos! As your subscriber base grow and more views you will get bigger revenues into the future. As you are now still young and the the day of retirement seems a long way off you must save from your earnings now in a pension fond. As while living abroad you will loose out when retirement comes. If you are paying your income taxes to your homeland you will be able to obtain your pension when that time comes. Also as your hobby is your business it's a good idea to get done an accounting of your expenses and investment in filming equipments. By doing this you will get an overview of your hard work and see the results in figures as it all comes down to Pesos or Dollars. You probably have used and invested thousands of Dollars in this activity and at the end of the year you can look back and see if the work has given you an economy that is acceptable. While you are earning Dollars from abroad in the Philippines it seems much more money because of it's value in Pesos. But, if you were living in a western country it wouldn't be the same as the cost of living is many times much higher. Just my 5 cents!

This is pretty accurate for the most part. I have been living in the Philippines for the past three years with my Filipina wife. It is very safe here and immigration is very easy. I live on Mactan Island near Cebu City. I would say I’m living very comfortably but not extravagantly. Here is my monthly budget: Rent for two Bedroom new house : $290 Electric running AC 15hrs a day :$100 Food + Daily Necessities Budget (quality food no alcohol):$300 Entertainment eating out 3 times a week, malls, coffee etc $300 Internet (slowish) $40 Cell phone $20 Immigration visa extension $75 (average and varies) can extend tourist visa up to 3 years the SRRV is not necessary imo. Miscellaneous (medical, short trips, taxis, clothes) $200 Summary: realistic budget is $1000-$1300 a month

Thanks for this info - very interesting. I am a homeowner in Oregon - about $1500 a month for mortgage and property tax. Probably double that for all our food and utility expenses, and car insurance. I would definitely retire in the Philippines - love the water and the people.

I think any countries that has a higher exchange rate will be the best place to retire. $1 is Php 42+++ here. Coz last week I converted $170.00 and I got Php 3,400 and some change. But that was through Paypal. Exchange rate goes up and down. Living in the provinces is cheaper compared to living in Manila or any major cities or business centers. The farther in the city the cheaper the cost of living. The cheaper the land prices or house.

If you buy your fish, beef, pork and vegetables in the public market, you can get them 1/2 to 1/3 cheaper compared to supermarkets. Price of dressed chicken is almost the same except if you buy less branded or supermarket branded chicken which is a lot cheaper. Also if you eat at a local carinderia, you save a lot conpared to restaurants. Here in Makati monthly food expense is around P15,000 to P20,000.

The snow is heavy and freezing in the wintertime. The only thing good here in Canada is the health care system. If you get sick, the doctor and the hospital are free. Some meds are also covered by OHIP. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan. The weather is nice during Spring, Summer, and Fall. But if you love warm weather, the Philippines is good. Yes, Rustan’s is high end. Maybe you can try and check out Metro Ayala Supermarket at the ground floor of Ayala Mall. It is affordable and still within the mall area. They also have imported goods section for your western items needs. 😀

Annette14cdo L Metro isn’t cheap. If you want really cheap goods, Gaisano, La Nueva, Prince and Colonnade supermarkets are the best bets. Metro supermarket in Ayala is only a lil bit cheaper than Rustan’s. Metro price is midrange. Rustan’s and Robinson’s Selection in Galleria Cebu have more product choices than most regular supermarkets. But if Finn really likes to splurge on imported goods from Europe, Australia and USA, membership-only Landers Superstore is the best option. S&R stocks mostly American goods.

Hi Finn, I spent like 50k to 60k a month with 6 people in the house. Well, rent excluded because we have our own house but we do have 1 helper for 7,500/ mo.,electricity 8 to 13k a mo.depending on the usage, WiFi 2k, water 500 to 750(depending on the usage again), Netflix 300, signal 300, fuel variable for 3 cars maybe 6k to 8k (depending on usage again) and the rest is food. Food / groceries really aren’t cheap say 7,500/ week for food. Just look for a cheapest rent but descent and you will save a lot more. Basically, rent close to commercial area are extremely high. Rustan’s is a high end store, go to SM or Robinson’s or Foodarama their prices are reasonable or more likely if you’re a cowboy try wet market, I myself prefer wet market because it’s fresh and cheap no frozen foods but my son likes a comfortable area to shop.( He is hard to please.) By the way, my kids lives in Talamban, cebu city. ( studying yet) Sorry, though this was a year ago and just watch it! I’m here in the US.

In Guam my essential expenses are probably around $2.3k a month... maybe a bit more. I pay $900 a month rent for a studio apartment here (but I do have ocean view :) ) My electric runs about $150-$160 a month. Home Phone/Mobile/Internet is $140. I also have a car payment, groceries, fuel for vehicle, insurance, and miscellaneous stuff. If I ever make it home I need to try and clear out my storage. I pay $190 a month for that! When I was living in the Philippines my costs were very similar to yours. I would usually shoot for no more than about P25-30k a month for a roof over my head when I was looking at where I would go next. Generally I was in a studio apartment or something similar because I never committed more than a month at a time. That was how I could stay 3 months in Subic diving the wrecks, or a month in Malapascua (one of my favorites dive destinations) or 6 weeks in Puerto Galera (another favorite). When I went places that I spent less time than a month I would often opt for a fan room with no a/c to save money. I didn't own a car or a motorbike in the Philippines but I did dive on a regular basis and that was one of my larger expenses where I could easily spend as much on diving as I did on rent :) In Guam I dive practically for free. Almost all my diving is shore diving and when I want to go I just load my gear in the car and 15 or 20 minutes later I'm gearing up :) For the diving at least I do save money here... it's just the diving there is really a lot better :)) Now throw in the occasional trip off island while I still have rent, car payment, insurance, etc.. to pay and is it any wonder I've not been to the US in 2 years :)) For me to fly from Guam to Houston will always be above $1500... from Manila I can find tickets for less than half that! When I lived there I made it home a couple times a year. You know I'd not really compared everything before you asked the question... Now that I'm looking at all the numbers I'm starting to ask myself why I don't move back :))

U can live like a king or queen in the Pi, with $500 a month. Avg pay of a work is $250 a month. If. U x 2 that. U should be ok. Now his place is nice, thats why his $1,000. But if u can budget $500 to $1,000 a month that is fantastic! If u make $400 in the pi thats like having a job in the Usa as a accounting manager. That is good. Now u have to expand how u think. Dont look at that in absolute terms. These are the advantages in the PI. To live here u dont need the following : $3,000 a month mortgage or $1800 a month rent. No property tax of $4000 a year, u save $400 on car payment, since u dont need a car u save car repairs like $1000 a year. And u save car insurance, u dont need it, u save $300 on gasoline a month, u may save $500 at least on food, u save $50 a month on stupid parking passes or tickets, u also save police tickets , u wont get fined in the PI, u probably wont pay federal taxes, and just deal with street potholes time to time. Lol, which i can tolerate. I rather tolerate pot holes over nasty big taxes. Oh, no credit cards, so u save $300 a,month on that. U wont spend on jackets and thick clothes. That prolly $700 a year, u literally and mentally feel light. Not much crazy bills piling up and your in your slippers wearing t shirts and shorts. Talk about paradise. Btw ur prolly be eating organic foods so u be healthier which saves u medical expense. Literally u dont feel like a puppet that been strings up by BIG AUTO, BIG ADs BIG PHARMY, BIG GOVT, Big banks, big everything that u own your life. Now all u have to do is really find a way to use your God given talent to muster a $500 to $1000 a month . Many retirees smarted up and live here on their social security and left the sould crushing rat race that keeps u in circles and imprisoned. GOD BLESS FINN

Our lovely hometown CEBU cost only so cheaper.For us locals we can buy foods from 10 pesos to 25pesos .If needed cook then it cost more but still too affordable for us.Because we are ordinary people living in Cebu.So we enjoy every little things that we have.We have lots of rich resources that everyone can enjoy.So great:-).

Hi Finn, this is big sister lorie. Below, you said, you're curious to know the cost of living abroad - in my case, America. I have title to your video, I called: BUDGETING, FORECASTING and PROJECTION. I went to school in the Philippines and took accounting classes but never paid much attention it's importance until I arrived in America. In America, you need to know how much your gross income, how much your net pay after deductions. Most Filipinos in America work two to three jobs so they can cope with the necessities and essentials. Biggest monthly expenditure is the mortgages if you own your house, monthly payment go by the thousands, monthly car payment - if you borrow money to obtain the car, monthly insurances - both car and house, if you have kids "very expensive" utility bills, food, yearly property taxes - go by the thousands, car maintenance, credit card debt and allocation for unintended expenses - eating out or gift buying. In every household that I know, it needs two earners to cover the projected expenses. With my explanation, you can pretty much get the picture the kind of life we're having in America. If we do not work in America, we do not have roof on our heads and that's the scary part. My sister and niece are renting one bedroom apartment for $1800 a month. They live far from where I live because of their job location. Mother and daughter have to split-up expenses so they can save at least. You have an advantage over us in so many ways because you are not pressured to go to work daily, you can create your own schedules. You are not under micro managed, most of us are. I envy your lifestyle. I wish I can reverse my lifestyle, but I have to be contented to what I've got because it was my choice to come to America. I work in the accounting department and I am responsible for reconciling the money that comes in on a daily bases so management would get an idea if we made money that day or not. Every end of the month, my head spins like crazy because we have to make sure that everything is done properly so the management can come up with solutions if the sales projection was not met. What you need to know is your EXPENSES against Receivables/income on a monthly basis. If your expenses is higher than your receivable/income, you're in trouble and that's where you make your adjustments in lifestyle. If you know how to create Spreadsheet, you can record your daily expenses against your cash in the bank. Based from you explanation, you will be staying in Cebu because of the convenience that serves you - that is your prerogative. I do not go to the gym, I'd rather take a walk everyday and do my Pilates. I just don't understand why people have to pay to exercise - amazed me! Gym is not a clean area, everybody is sweating. I have a little idea how to handle money and I am sharing it with you. If you look for financial planner, those people are expensive. Know your income so you can balance your lifestyle.

You can buy a condo unit Finn. There are lot of units which only costs you Php 10k or less per month. Go look online for condo listings in Cebu. And you can also rent out the unit.
