My favorite was experiencing an afternoon by the beach in Coronado. It was mesmerizing. Now I live in NYC, but I still aim to one day settle down in San Diego.

I'm actually from San Diego myself and the truth is that we keep building these unaffordable homes which killed my childhood dream of living in the downtown area. That is indeed why most San Diegans including myself don't live anywhere near the beach. At this point in time, I still live in a mediocre apartment with my family in Paradise Hills since 1999 when I was five years old. At least the rent was cheaper back then.

I have an opportunity to relocate to SD for work from Houston, TX. I just moved to Houston from Chicago less than a year ago so income tax and a high sales tax aren't anything new but what would you say is a comfortable salary for a family of 3? We plan on renting a 2br initially. Obviously, gas, rent and state income tax will be the major increases but the rest seemed reasonable.
@BernMcGovern5 жыл бұрын
Hi Arman - Rent for a 2br condo/apartment will most likely cost you anywhere from $1500-$2000 in a decent area with good schools (if thats important) There's less expensive areas and more expensive areas but I think that's kind of the middle ground. It's hard for me to say exactly how much salary is enough to live comfortably but I know people that make around $60k-70k year and make it work. Feel free to give me a call or email and I can break down the areas for you. Hope that helps a little.

If you can afford to live close to the coast, close enough that you feel like you live there, it's great, too long of a drive then it's not really your life and you're an inland creature who sees the coast now and then. The sweet spot in San Diego is on the coast from Carlsbad south to La Jolla, with homes as high as 20 million, but along this stretch of beach within 3 to 4 miles of the ocean the cheapest 1 bdrm condo is 350,000 and the cheapest house is 750,000. If you're from Oklahoma this is probably shocking. After living in Encinitas for 40 years I can tell you I love it, but if I needed to move inland to save money I'd probably just go to Colorado or New Mexico, the real estate is more affordable and its more more beautiful than inland San Diego, which can get very hot and dry and is still a little pricey. If your not going to see the ocean, honestly, Southern California is not worth it, especially places like Riverside or San Bernardino which are basically armpits, there are better places that don't have the ocean, that are beautiful, and you can have a decent house for 250,000. I have a lot of retired friends who left to save money.
