The average hospital stay is about 4 days. What are the odds and what could possibly cause someone to spend more than two MONTHS in the hospital? It would be interesting to see some statistics that show how many people each year spend more than 60 days in the hospital.

It is not very likely to be hospitalized for that long, but it is a possibility.

Yes. I just wonder if there are any records that one could see to determine how many people spend more than 2 months in the hospital each year? I mean, I live in Florida and I’m sure that I could buy alligator insurance if I wanted to. It’s unlikely that I will be attacked by an alligator but it’s possible, right?

My sister and her husband are in they're 70's. My sister's husband has been ill for 5 years he's been in and out of the hospital and nursing home for rehab. My sister told me that her Medicare has run out. She has to wait a month before she can take him back to hospital before Medicare starts paying. Could you explain why Medicare has run out.

Medicare does not run out. It does not have a maximum benefit. Only maybe skilled nursing care for rehab but not hospital.

Here’s a quick question on the skilled nursing care issue. Let’s say someone is say 69 living alone just fine, but they are going to need say a hip replacement (not a fracture). Much of the time nowadays that is being done on a outpatient surgery basis. So wouldn’t that be saying “okay Mr. Jones here’s your post surgical exercises. We’ll wheel you to the hospital entrance, good luck getting to your car from there.”

You would likely be recommended to have home health, rather than skilled nursing if possible.

Hi I worked in a Skilled Nursing home under reimbursement, am a RN. I would recommend to have the surgeon have you stay in the hospital for minimum of 3 nights to get the benefit of both skilled rehab in skilled nursing facility and home health. Make sure to have your status as hospital admit NOT observation status. Another factor to consider for people who are under a Medicare Replacement plan, if your therapist indicated that you would likely stay more than 30 days in skilled rehab, terminate the replacement plan and convert to the Medicare Part A traditional plan. The HMO are very notorious in sending rehab folks after 14 days. We (nurses and therapist) have to fight them to prove the person requires longer rehab and it is medically necessary. 95% of the HMOs don't extend unfortunately.

I wanted to add to staying in the a Skilled Nursing Facility. It is not true that only rehabilitation is the reason for you to utilize your Part A benefit after a 3-midnight hospital stay. Another requirement is receiving direct Nursing skill services 24/7 that can only be provided by a licensed nurse. I am an RN who manages medicare reimbursement in Skilled nursing facilities. Hope this somehow help others as there are so many misconception. Thank you for the videos. New sub here getting ready for my early retirement in 8 years, wanting to know all the ropes to consider. I will look up the facebook group as well.

I didn't take a supplement. I don't believe I'm on Humana. And I was gonna do the supplement, but it was another extra $300 a year. So I'm not sure if I did the right thing or not. I'm still paying what is at 174 a month for my insurance. Through medicare, no, can I change that? Just a straight medicare, or what do I need to do.

Free is in the top ten most persuasive words in the English language; unfortunately, it does not apply to Medicare.😀
