I imagine you having this very same conversation with Randy. Did you realize what you were getting yourself into when you took on adventure? Me being city folk down here in Roy wanted to get me a small place out in Corinne with animals but I quickly realized the basic cost. I admire you and other ranchers in general. I live paycheck to paycheck but you have way many more mouths to feed than the average person. Kudos sir, you are my hero.

We are a former 4H family. My wife and now 18 & 20 year old boys were pretty serious into Alpine & Nubian milk goats. We are about to move to our property near Drummond, MT. We have 40 acres at 6000 ft elevation. It's not heavily forested and has pretty good grass when it's not covered with snow. We have been looking at raising something. We thought about Alpine milk goats because that's what we know and we get milk. Never thought about Llamas until I saw you and Randy using them on elk hunts. Kinda peeked my interest. We still have a lot of infrastructure to build but you definitely have given me the Llama bug. Thank you for your informative video.

You put out some awesome videos on llamas!!! I just recently found your channel listening to podcasts with Randy and found it very interesting to pack with llamas and wanted to learn more. I’m from Michigan and love going west for backcountry hunts, I can see myself using llamas to assist me someday. My family and I run about 100 head of beef cow and calf pairs and I found it very interesting on your numbers of just the cost of hay and the waste you have with llamas. Here in Michigan we are fortunate enough to raise our own alfalfa hay but if we were to purchase that it would be around $200 per ton. So I was just running with your numbers as planning for 10 lbs of hay per day per llama but they only consume 6 lbs which that means between barn and llama there is 40% waste! 40% waste at $150 a ton per llama per year is $60 of waste and you guys have 200 or so llamas....that’s $12000a year of waste! I find that to be huge. We had a similar issue with feeding heifers in the winter months and found a solution by building our own stand alone feed bunks out of steel with rebar slats but then “V” down to a catch pan at the bottom with plastic barrels so when the cattle would pull the hay thru the slats on the feed bunk the extra falls in the catch pan and not on the ground so the cattle would then eat it out of the catch pan but they don’t like to eat it off the ground. So I was wondering if you guys have done anything more to reduce your hay waste in those 7 months of feeding the llamas? As a business owner I’m sure you are already aware of the numbers so I would love to hear what you guys have done to improve that part of your operation! I've been watching a lot of your videos and others, learning everything I can and we've been setting up our barn and field for llamas but I seem to be stuck at the purchasing stage. There are a few breeders within a few hours of me that I've contacted and they all seem to dismiss me because I've never had llamas before or because I'm not part of that world. Genuine question, how do you break into the world of llamas if no one is willing to sell to someone who has never owned one before? I've tried to demonstrate that I have other animals and that we can meet the needs of llamas but it just seems like a secret club that I can't get into.

Hello Kelly- That seems like a common answer to be honest. I am not sure why folks tend to be that way? I love it when someone is eager, asking questions, wants to learn and puts in the effort. Google Llama breeders. $1500 for non pedigree show animals to $4500 to $10,000 for pedigreed animals for show and breeding for show. Some pack outfitters are charging $5000 for "special bred packing animals" which is a scam. All Llamas are pack animals.

I think that buying a Llama from you is a win - win for someone like me and my son's! I am currently healing from a leg injury but after watching your videos I am convinced that my wife and I and our two youngest teenage sons may look you up for a summer trip to backpack Idaho. We don't want to go on a cruise or anything like that, so I am going to propose this idea to my family. We live in New Mexico, and it is very similar to Idaho in certain places! I've seen breeders in the Phoenix area keep 20 Llamas in a couple acres without issue. They don't need 1/3 acre each. He wants you to rent his instead of buying and breeding your own.

A person needs to consider impact on the pasture. A small feed ground in the desert isn’t providing any fodder with 20 animals on it for very long before it’s trampled into dust. I’m sure Beau is interested in preserving the feed crop that can be harvested even with animals pastured on it.
