I have two 100% wool blankets, got both for under $100 and they're both fairly soft and decent quality considering the price. On their own they keep me warm 3 out of 4 seasons, and in the winter I just layer them up. The smaller ones also make a great supplement for a summer sleeping bag. Sometimes you go camping in late summer and it gets pretty cold at night. I've never regretted taking the extra bulk.

@@newageselfreliance The warmer but coarser one is the Ikea Ravavor wool throw, made in Italy. It was $75 CAD. But I think they might have discontinued it. The less warm but softer one is the Patrick King merino wool throw (made in England), which they've since bumped the price up to about $100. I also just bought a John Hanly 100% wool picnic blanket as a gift (made in Ireland), which is the warmest but coarsest of the three. That one ran me $110. I'm also researching local whole sale wool fabric to make a super warm emergency/camping blanket. Looks like the warmest I can get will run me about $80 but I don't expect the fabric to be too comfortable.

There are a few very glaring issues with the presentation here; 1)that first blanket is NOT an actual surplus blanket but a cheap Swiss blanket knock off. A real Swiss wool blanket is not itchy or pokey. 2)the US army didn't ever issue a queen size blanket. 3)coarse wool should not be an issue in the field as it is intended as the outer layer and Eastern European rough wool sheds water almost as well as canvas. 4)lanolize your wool or it is not nearly as awesome as it is sold to be, but it makes an awesome sponge that never dries if it isn't. 5)most commercial blankets (even $200-500 blankets) have very little lanolin added back after processing and need to be retreated. 6)the blanket is usually your outer most or second most layer and loft isn't nearly as important as it is touted to be. The blanket works with your clothing layer as well to help hold air against your body. 7)there are two ways to make blankets, woven and felted. Dont ignore a felted blanket. I know Im critical, but you do seem to have a good base-keep up the work!

The benefits of wool heavily out weighs most other fabrics. I can see how allergic reactions could cause for an alternative fabric to be sought after but in my mind wool is still king.

There is a place for cheaper blankets. The cheap blanket in this video I use as a dog bed for my German Shepherd. She loves it. I've tried to buy her real dog beds but she just keeps laying on the blanket.

@@newageselfreliance I think I may actually just stick with polyester fleece blankets. I'm not normally a fan of polyester in clothing, but for a blanket it is mold and moisture resistant, so for putting on the ground it could be good for sleeping on.

Excellent video. Very well presented; down to Earth and straight forward. I picked up my first wool blanket yesterday, and ordered my second one last night! I bought a 3lb, and I already love it, but I instantly understood why 5lb is the way to go if you are camping and bushcrafting. This is pretty thin, so I had to order a better blanket. I know pretty much nothing about wool, but it was about -20C last night (or more), and I stood outside with this thing on me...for about 10 minutes. VERY impressive. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! It was this video that convinced me last night that I needed to upgrade immediately, and I am sure I will be glad that I did. Much appreciated.

You’re 100% right. I have 3 wool blankets, 2 are 100% and perfect. I have an Australian Army (1968, it’s older than me) blanket that’s thinner, ideal for warm weather and packs small. My thick, queen size 100% wool is my favourite. I sweat if I layer it too much, it’s a beauty. It’s soft, thick but not too heavy, about the same as a sleeping bag. Two of mine are made by Onkaparinga Australia. The Australian Army blanket is a Norwellan.😊

Unfortunately trying to sell high quality wool blankets is very hard. The average consumer today has that Walmart mentality and will opt for a much cheaper product. Are they soft like fleece or are they pretty pokey and itchy??? I have seen those on Amazon but after that Swiss Knockoff being so bad I'm worried about the quality of the cheaper blankets.

@@newageselfreliance They a very soft for wool blankets. It will never feel like fleece as wool fibers actually have small little barbs on them, for real. They can process it to feel "softer" with a good hand to it but never get it as soft as fleece, not lambswool anyway. They are very nice blankets, as nice of a feel to them as my Hudson's Bay 4 point blanket, but a fraction of the price. There is also the trick of putting the wool blanket into a drier with a tennis ball on warm for about 20 to 30 minutes, which will soften them up and increase the loft too. Put them in dry by the way. All of the Ektos blankets maintain a 4.5-star rating on Amazon with hundreds of reviews. They are legit... Also, just fyi, do not listen to that jerk on the ratings who ran his wool blanket through the washer like 10 times. First, don't wash a wool blanket in a washer with an agitator in it, it will ruin them. Second, don't was the darn thing 10 times in a row in a washer with an agitator in it, it will ruin it. Some people's kids. lol Naw, seriously, they are awesome blankets man, you will not be disappointed.

One suggestion on the "cheap" wool blanket for you. When you wash it, at the final rinse stage where you would add fabric softener, try adding a shot of hair conditioner i. Wool is hair after all and if you can find the stuff with lanolikn (wool grease) in it for dry hair you're giving back the wool what wa processed out. I have a pair of cheap Harbor Freight blankets on my bed right now and did this andthey are quite soft. When you wash wool you willl need to do it on a gentle, knits, or wool setting on your washing machine and do it in cold water. when you dry them it will have to be on "fluff air" or the coolest setting on your dryer, but other than that you should be able to take out a ton of the screatchyness this way. Hope this helps.

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I'm actually using the cheap blanket as a dog bed now. She doesn't mind the feel of it at all. Plus it keeps her nice and warm during the winter months when the floor gets colder in her room. Next time I wash it for her I will try adding conditioner and see if that does help.

The advantage of putting it over a sleeping bag is that it doesn't have to be soft meaning you can get away with a much cheaper wool blanket. Just focus on the thickness of the blanket. The thicker it is the warmer it is going to be. Cost is dependent on thickness and softness. So by not worrying about softness, you can get a thicker blanket for the same money.

Wools alright. I need to get two to place in my vehicle. I like my recon gen 2 -20 sleeping bag. That along with my snugpak fleece liner and my army vortex bivy with my thermaridge mat should be good to go for winter camping or shtf emergency.

That would be a good setup. Funny story, I have two 20 degree sleeping bags and I bought a fleece liner for them and thought I was good to go. One day I decided to test out how much of a pain in the butt it would be to zip up the sleeping bag with the liner in the way. When I went to get inside with the liner I didn't fit. I had gained too much weight and with big me and the liner, I couldn't get the sleeping bag zipper to even touch. I learned real quickly to watch my weight and to test my gear often.

I agree with the loft in a blanket for keeping one warmer compared to a thin blanket where you must layer. My go to blanket is Fleece. Hudson Bay is the top of the line when it comes to wool blankets but they are very expensive. I think the Pathfinder or even the Ektos on top of a more comfortable blanket would work really well.

If you boil a bucket of water mixed with lanolin remove from flame when boil has been reached then soak your wool in the mixture and it will be become soft. It has turned itchy wool to not itchy at all

My dad gave me his old surplus Navy Blanket, and even though it wasn't anything fancy, hunting out in zero degree weather I was very glad to have it. I know one thing for sure is that even if I could afford a Hudson Bay, I wouldn't be taking it out into the field. I got from my father, born in 1890, a Hudson Bay blanket that is double length. Keeps your feet from sticking out. It's heavy, 4 points but oh so nice

@bali song :Good observations. One does need a horse, of course. Most range riders had a pack horse. Imagine taking food and cooking stuff with you also. That solved that unless it ran off lol. The drovers riding with big herds had a wagon that all the riders put their gear into when moving. Pretty much all that was in their bedroll. I got my bedroll from Tip's Western in Winnemucca NV, and some other stuff from J.M. Capriola Elko NV. IMO the best saddlers and most authentic western outfitters in the USA. Advice: Get the best you can afford. I hate freezing my ass of at night.

Is the $200 blanket that you have the Pathfinder blanket? I have an Italian Airforce wool blanket purchased from miliatry surplus store. It's 100% virgin wool, thick and lofty, and the softest wool blanket that I have. It is incredibl warm. I agree that it's the loft and not the density or overall weight of the blanket that creates warmth. For example, I also have the Filson mackinaw blanket--=it is denser and weighs more than the airforce blanket, but it does not have the napped finish and is not as thick and lofty. I think the airforce blanket is warmer. Only bummer about the airforce blanket is that it's not a queen size.

Yes, this is the Pathfinder blanket. I hear some of those 100% military surplus blankets are some of the best blankets ever. I have never been able to find one. The best I have found is the 80% wool blankets that aren't as good as the 100% wool versions. I have heard that the Pathfinder is close but still not as good as the military surplus ones. It is however the best one I have found without spending twice as much if not even more money.

I picked up a US army surplus wool blanket a few weeks ago. Think I paid ~$50 shipped for it. You're right about it being pretty soft. I had used old southwestern style wool blankets and they were scratchy to the point where i didn't like using them. I've looked at those Swiss Army wool blankets on eBay before. They seem to run about the same price as the US surplus ones. A tip I found out (that I believe is true but who really knows since i saw it on the internet) is that an actual US surplus blanket will be 100% wool. But it will be a certain percentage of virgin wool and a percentage of recycled wool but won't contain anything like cotton, polyester, nylon, etc. There are companies out there that make ones in the surplus style but they are retail copies not made to the same specifications.

There are 100% wool Surplus Blankets but they are very rare. I hear they are some of the best blankets available. Lester River uses them to make their Anoraks. That is why the price keeps going up and up and up. The blankets they use are getting harder and harder to find.

As an American, it's hard to get European blankets over here. The ones that do make it over are way out of my budget. The USA Army surplus blankets are only 80% wool, which makes them more comfortable than some other blankets but not as warm. One day I would like to try out a Hudson Bay 100% wool blanket but those are very expensive as well.

The only one I have is 90% wool and was like $40 I think. It's scratchy but warm. I want to get a queen size 100% when I get the extra money. I like the ones that Dave Cantibury has on Self Reliance Outfitters store. You can also use them as cloaks around camp. A Hudson Bay would be nice but I don't see paying $500 for a blanket. Lol!

Yeah, wool blankets can be really spendy the big one on this video is from the Pathfinder Store. It is a queen 100% wool blanket and it is awesome. You have to be careful there are a lot of counterfeit wool blankets out there as well. The Swiss blanket I have is a remake of the original and it is horrible.

The good ones are expensive that is why I only have one. I really like it though on really cold nights I will through it on the bed just for extra warmth. It works really well.

EKTOS 100% virgin wool, 60x90 inches, 5.5lbs, yes.. That's right, 5.5lbs of VIRGIN WOOL. how much? About $50usd. Comapred to a Faribault of the same size, i'd put my money on the EKTOS. Anyone who truly knows wool knows they would choose the EKTOS over any other blanket on the market. There simply is no comparison.

The Hudson Bay Company used to grade their blankets with the colored bands that you see in the movies and stuff and some of them blankets you see on for sale the colors mean certain gradients and more the colors are you there's a color code to it and you don't always get that with military style blankets most modern blankets are Blended to save on wool and the compensate for modern heating systems in buildings you don't need that heavy wool blanket inside a building with a heating system you'd cook yourself to death

The number of points on a blanket represents the overall finished size of the blanket, not its value in terms of beaver pelts as is sometimes believed ie better the pelts better blanket you got

That swiss army wool blanket is so overrated. I bought one and it´s nothing special and I think it is blended with synthetic for strength.

The really old original swiss wool blanket is a great blanket but all of these lower cost copies are junk. I really hate mine and don't use it for anything at all. Thank You so much for watching I really appreciate the support!!!

I love my big thick Pathfinder wool blanket it is 100% wool and is so soft. My military blankets are only 80% wool but doubled up they can be really warm as well.

Bushcraft shit. Any synthetic insulator (but not fleece) is better. cheaper and lighter. I mean buy yourself 2-3 sq. meters of primaloft or any other, then take any nylon or cotton fabric. and sew that together. CHEAPER, LIGHTER, MOISTURE RESISTATANT. You can even use some thin wool fabric(the suit wool fabric will do), if you want that natural feeling of wool.

The other big advantage of wool is that it is fire-resistant. So wrapping up and enjoying a fire is easier not having to worry about embers falling onto your blanket. I usually carry a sleeping bag because it is lighter and warmer than my wool blankets but it's still fun to bring out the wool every once in a while.
