Thanks for your tips. I even try to do those things in my own country but with everyone rushing around it gets difficult. The US is an automobile society, such a shame.

Next time I come to Costa Rica I want to do the local stuff. No touristy stuff. Would love to volunteer. ! How about helping kids to learn English. So many other things beside a beach. When we were there in Tambor I was up at 4vevery morning and walked around. Being at the ocean and listening to it was amazing. Like you said the howler monkeys and mcaws. I fell in love. You are so luckyto live there.

We happened across a bull fight in Costa Rica near Uvita and it was awesome. It was like a small town carnival and circus type atmosphere. A totally unique experience we were not expecting.

Depending on where you are staying, you'll probably get up at 5:30am every day anyway. We only had screens on our windows. Every morning started with birds chirping and bugs buzzing. A few days in I was glad I wasn't missing the mornings.

Heck yes! Don't forget the white water rafting!! Lol. Had a amazing time, went to CR by myself did exactly as Mike explains here, and wow had so much of a good time. Oh yeah, and skydiving oh boy! The scenery from that tiny plane over Manuel Antonio park and the Pacific ocean took my breath away.

Returned (12/18/19) from 12 days in Guanacaste, La Cruz. It's far northwest on Pacific side. Was going to rent car really cheaply from Budget. But there is Govt mandatory Ins. you must pay for unless rental co includes in price, ask and be certain. Even the best of the best American auto policies that might cover you for rentals in Costa Rica or any rental car ins. provided as a benefit of your credit card, even if you have a Titanium Platinum Diamond Encrusted Meteoric metal AMEX, it will not be accepted you must pay their mandatory Ins. and it might be more than the daily rate. Regardless if you get in an accident you are not allowqed to move the car(s) until police and Insurance arrives on scene. But cost anxiety left upon losing License at airport. Took public bus from San Jose airport to La Cruz 120+ miles for $8.50 US. It took 5-6 hours in middle of night, don't believe cabs that will tell you 3.5 hours, will tell you about their cost in a moment. La Cruz is on edge of ridge with stunning sunsets every night. One thing I haven't seen in videos, is that at night absolutely walk with a small but powerful lightweight flashlight as there are constant uneven surfaces and levels along with holes and non-covered underground access. You can easily pull muscles, twist ankles, and worse. My flight was on points and $26 Trav Ins +$86 Tax, 36k miles from bank, $150 cash RT. I got the room for 10 nights and paid an extra $6 a day for breakfast. So room, b-fast and 13% VAT was $460! Never ate lunch, dinner ran between 8 and 12 US. Did nothing else than walk around town, walk to beach, cross the street and watch sunset and there were all sorts of surprise activities going on in this tiny little town. Asked cabs how much back to airport. 1st guy said $350! Immediately dropped to $250. Went to hotel and mgr knocks on door, cab wants to know how much I have, said $120 and cabbie said something vulgar. I took bus back and this time it was nice w/AC and assigned seating and cost $7.50 right to departures. When I first arrived one of my biggest non-lodging expenses was cab from the San Jose airport to the "correct" bus terminal to get me where I was going. $30 for that and $7.50 for 120 mile bus! Find out if you can get the bus to your destination right from airport. Only time I felt like I got taken. Beware of overly helpful people around any transportation locations. Also, the way the roads are the cab could not physically have made it faster than bus. The entire trip cost me less than $900 tops, and it was totally immersive. Loved it.

Oh, without a doubt watching dozens of Michaels videos first made all the difference! Otherwise it would have been a complete disaster. And in almost 2 weeks I heard one, but one person say Pura Vida. Maybe in tourist towns but not where I was. And it was the real deal up there.

If the Municipality of San José had the intention of making the city beautiful, it would have already done so, I can understand you, we Ticos don't like it either. San José is a very ugly capital for such a touristic country. If you want to visit San José visit Rohrmoser , La Sabana and Escazú not downtown

Yes! Embrace the "Pura Vida". Get up, and get out, for the dawn one morning; get on a trail; eat at a soda; get rained on; speak Spanish when you can't. Take it in! Thanks, Michael. (had to chuckle, recalling your video on how hard it is to speak and understand Spanish! ... fight the good fight, friend) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHi6Z5ykr5mMhbc&t=180

Why toilet paper? Doesn't Costa Rica have any? 🤔
@My-name-is-MUD5 жыл бұрын
I didn't have issues even though I folded a dozen paper towels and put in back-pack for anything they might come in useful for. And they did. And some bus drivers do not care where they stop especially at night, so if you have to go it's off on side of dark jungle road and you have no idea what's out there. You're taking care of business and the last thing you should have to worry about is TP. Do not try to clean yourself with some random leaf...

There used to be a real issue with public bathrooms not having t-paper. It's usually pretty good now, but like Mark says, some of the bus stop places many not have it, or sometimes there's a t-paper dispenser outside ( you grab it on the way in)...can't tell you how many times I've walked right by that!!
