Here are some frequently asked questions from the comments-- Question: Does the dusk/dawn sensor still work after this modification? _Answer_ Yes, it did for me, as it was a separate module. However, a different model light with a monolithic module might exist (as mentioned by some commenters) in which case it would not. Feel free to read the comments to learn more. Question: How exactly do you to wire it up to include the dusk/dawn sensor? _Answer_ I can tell you what worked for me, but I am not an electrician, so consider this "for entertainment purposes" only. What worked for me was hot (black) wire from the wall to black on the sensor, output from the sensor (red) to black of the new Harbor Breeze socket, and white wires tied together. Here's a photo: imgur.com/a/L9NjpSE Question: If I make this conversion, do I still need to purchase the LED driver module? _Answer_ No. This is a conversion from an LED light back to a simpler standard socket. However, with a standard socket an LED bulb is still an option...

Thanks for the tip. All 3 of mine went out over the last 2 months. Just replaced with socket lights today. For those asking about how to wire - the black goes to gold and white goes to silver

Thankyou for taking the time and energy to present a solution to the failing Costco wall lights.We have 2 lights and one started flashing at about the 4 to 5 yr timeline.I had seen a video on replacing the driver but as I have a lot of experience with electrical I thought what if you replace the driver and then the LED lights fail.So instead was looking at replacing both with the new Costco wall lights that have done away with the circuitry and gone back to a socket with a 3000k Led bulb included which I just installed one yesterday on the back side of the house.So your solution is simple and brilliant as it mirrors the new Costco wall lights.I agree why throw away a perfectly good looking wall light when you can resolve the problem simply and cost effective.I do not understand nor agrree with the thumbs down.There should be an option for a thumbs down on the thumbs down.Thanks keep it up.

I'll echo what others have written. Thank You SO much for posting this. When one of my lights began flickering (after being installed about 8 years ago) my knee-jerk response was to start looking for replacement lights, even though we love the cracked-glass appearance of the light fixture. Once I saw the price for new lights, I thought I'd take a look at KZbin and I found your video. The conversion to a regular light socket worked exactly as you depicted in the video and as you described in your comments. I'm not a home handyman, and there was something very satisfying when I flipped the switch, covered up the photo-sensor, and the light came on! I'll convert the other one this weekend. Thx again!

Moved into a house that had these lights and they both started flashing within a few weeks of each other. I almost spent extra money on redoing the LED box per other videos, then I came across this. It could not have been any easier. Even drilling the metal plates for each new bulb mount was effortless. It took me 20 minutes for each, no more. Thank you for posting this video and saving all of us a lot of extra hassle. Only warning for those attempting this......the crackle glass lamp cover is extremely fragile. When you take them off, hold them by the metal frame and not by the glass cover. Unfortunately, I cracked my first one......but when I remounted it, put that part to the back and it is unnoticeable.

Greetings! I like the video. Please note that all LED light bulbs have a micro version of the constant current driver built in. That also means that not all LED bulbs can operate for outdoor temperature ranges. I recently bought outdoor LED bulbs and its recommended minimum starting temperature is -25C (-13F). (In Colorado, we recently got down to -20F (-28.9C).) I couldn't find a maximum temperature on the packaging. So be sure to check this for your outdoor lanterns.

Thanks for this video. I have 5 of these Costco lights and they did only last 5 years before 2 of them went out. I went with your suggestion to just convert to a socket. Super easy and they all work perfect. I went with a Dusk to Dawn Edison LED and it functions the same except looks way better. My wife thinks I’m a genius 😂. Cost about $20 plus a tube of caulk.

Man, I cant thank you enough! I opened a KZbin account just to say thanks! I have 10 of these things, and they only lasted about 5 1/2 years before the flicker started, and became darkness later on. Thought it was just the LED, but then realized after watching your video it was most likely the driver/ballast. Then realizing the costly repair headache that would be. Followed your idea of just replacing it with a socket and LED screw bulb. I bought the sockets in packs from Amazon and they were only about $1 each and did them at my leisure while on Zoom calls. I used the 'Edison' yellow type LED's and they look even better than before. (Coach lantern never went well with stark white light anyway IMO). Anyway, great job and Thank you!

I watched a few Costco porch light videos, and yours is the best. It's a great idea to replace the LED with a regular light socket. It's less expensive than the Constant LED Driver and will not fail for 6 years. It's more work, but a great idea. Thank you for the great idea.

I completed my two front lights last night. Only one had gone out. I isolated the problem to the led lights. I changed out both front lights thinking it only a matter of time for the other light to have issues. I cut out the LED driver circuit pack and used the same wires to splice the new outlet, as you probably did. Thank you very much for sharing this fix.

For those that are coming here but have a later model, be aware that lanterns after this version have an LED driver with built-in switch (so 3 pairs of wires) rather than a the driver and separate switch as shown here. You'll need to purchase a separate photo switch OR if you don't care about the day/night sensor aspect...just leave the sensor disconnected.

I replaced the broken one with the one from the garage. Then I followed your video and changed out the innards of the broken one and installed it at the garage. I went ahead and bought enough sockets to retrofit the other two and I'm just waiting for the lights to go out. 😉 Oh and I'm a new subscriber!

@ACBMemphis
@ACBMemphis Жыл бұрын
You could try taking one apart and seeing what's inside, since it's broken anyway. Just Googling that model, it really would depend on what is behind that plastic disc. Would probably be possible to remove the "guts" and mount the socket in the disc itself, but that might look bad or have heat issues...

Yes I kept the dusk to dawn sensor, it's possible you are having a different problem or maybe using a different model as this video is 3 years old. I'd try temporarily removing the sensor and see if it works with just the bulb. If it flickers with nothing but a wire connected directly to the bulb, seems likely a bulb/switch/wire problem. Thanks. In this model I was able to keep the sensor, however, according to some of the comments there is a newer model where the sensor is combined with the power supply.

With the screw in bulb retrofit....did you keep the dusk to dawn sensor? It's not clear on the video if that part of the circuitry was still in place?
@ACBMemphis
@ACBMemphis Жыл бұрын
Yes, I was able to keep the sensor as it was separate. However, other people have commented here that there's a newer version of this lamp without a separate sensor... Just did a quick search on lowes.com for "dusk dawn sensor" - they have wire-in and socket models for $14 or less, depending on how much time you wanted to invest you might still come out ahead financially.

Yes, the sensor is a separate module and I was able to keep it.. What worked for me was to power the sensor with the hot (black) wire and output the red to the black of the new harbor breeze socket. Here's a photo: imgur.com/a/L9NjpSE Good luck thanks for watching.

From a little research on replacing mine that died, did you have a different constant current on the LED drivers? Depending on the amount the drivers put out it seems this can affect the Lumens and the color intensity of the LED. Mine originally had a 750mA driver. I've purchased a 900mA driver and some replacement LEDS to get a little brighter and match the color temperature of some other lights I have. Waiting for them to come in and I'm hoping for good results.

If you're replacing the LEDs and the power supplies you should get consistent results. In the first part of the video, I tried 2 new identical power supplies, but I think the LEDs must have had a problems as well... Thanks for watching!

I would like to replace my LED with a regular 60W socket like in this video. I'm assuming that I remove all of the wiring except the white and black wires that come from the base of the fixture. Is this correct? I'm really not concerned with the light coming on when it gets dark, i would prefer to turn light on and off as needed. Thanks!
@ACBMemphis

Yes, that is what I would attempt to do...* The red wire was part of the photocell, so I think bypassing that would make it a standard fixture. Thanks for watching! (As I said in the video, I'm not an electrician, so take any advice here with appropriate skepticism and use safety procedures.*)

With the standard light bulb, what did you do for ground? Is it still grounded to the first but on the fixture ?
@ACBMemphis
@ACBMemphis 2 жыл бұрын
I did not change any grounding. In other words, the original fixture only had internal white/black wires, so I simply replaced the LED "box" with the Harbor Breeze socket, otherwise keeping the original wiring intact. I don't remember exactly, but the copper ground wire probably attaches to the fixture itself where it mounts to the box. As I mentioned in the video, I'm not a licensed electrician, so if you are unsure please consider this video entertainment not professional advice. Thanks for watching! Do you just wore the socket straight to the ground and hot hire to the house?
@ACBMemphis
@ACBMemphis 2 жыл бұрын
I used the photo sensor, so at my house what that means is all the white wires went together, but the black (hot) wire went to the black on the photo sensor, then the output of the photo sensor (red) went to black on the socket. Here's a picture, but remember I am not an electrician so use at your own risk: imgur.com/a/L9NjpSE

Adding the harbor breeze swap kit does that eliminate the LED driver inside? Would you be able to show us the inside after you hook that all up before you put it all back together?
@ACBMemphis
@ACBMemphis 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. I purposely did not show a bunch of wiring in the video, because as I said at 1:54 I am not an electrician and want to encourage people to be very careful. If you search the Lowe's Web site for "photocell button" that is what is left inside after you remove the LED driver. The way I understand it, white wire is neutral - I connected all 3 of those together. The black power wire went to the black wire on the photocell button, and the red wire went to the black wire on the socket.

I put in a regular light bulb fixture and will double check it tonight, but when I covered the sensor… in the daytime after reinstalling…the bulb started flickering…😢 Nope this did not fix the problem, the light bulb flickers off and on just like the old LED did. GRRRRRRRRR…. NEED NETTER OPTION.

@@ACBMemphis Thanks for the link to the picture showing how to rewire it keeping the original photocell operational. Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. On these lights, yes, I was able to still use the automatic sensor. However, other commenters have stated that there is a "new version" of the light, in which the LED and sensor are in the same box and not separate modules. If you have those, it would not work. No way to really know until you open it up.
