Appreciate your work. I would never risk my engine to get another 5,000 miles from a 20 dollar oil change. Saving 20 dollars isn’t worth it.

If only my oil changes cost $20 I would be so happy. I have to stay in manufacturer spec thus $75 DIY (DexosD for baby diesel and VW 508 for Audi).

My engine has oil % indicator and I noticed that the % drop by 10% every 1000 miles or gradually drop by 50% every 6 months whichever comes first. But still I change engine oil and filter every 5000 miles or 6-9 months, but willingly stretch to 9 months if I don't drive much in that period. Had an engine failure experience with a Mercedes that is under warranty given they are recommending the 10k miles / 12 months oil interval; so I am going to stick with 5000 miles Kirkland Synthetic oil on my daily/weekly driver.

Nicely done. Controlled the variables as much as possible for a good comparison. As you likely know Kirkland=Super Tech Syn 10k = Amazon Basics. Good oil and your specific10k mi. oci explanation makes sense. Not for all, but works in your case.

Just one note. The report describes “silicon”, not silicone. Silicon is a natural element, very common, and used in multiple applications. Silicone is a manufactured product comprised of several different elements, primarily oxygen and hydrogen (water). Good video.

Another comprehensive vid. Appreciate your honesty regarding why the long interval works fine in your particular situation and the breakdown of the Blackstone data. I think they should breakdown their data regarding what makes up the additive package etc. as you did for us 👍🏽

The reality is that he could go 20,000 miles between oil changes and the Blackstone oil analysis would still show that the oil is just fine. But that misses the reality of why extended oil changes are a bad idea. What an oil analysis doesn’t show is the internal condition of the engine in terms of varnish and sludge, especially on the low compression piston rings. The oil analysis can come back with wonderful results while the rings are getting gummed up with varnish and sludge because the oil has used up its detergent additives. While it might be possible to restore those detergent additives without changing the oil, no such products are on the market. Kirkland 0W20 and 5W20 routinely go on sale for $30 for 10 quarts, or $3 per quart. You can just install a Fumoto valve in place of the drain plug and have an easy way of doing an oil change at 5000 miles. The oil filter can certainly go 10,000 miles and the 8 ounces or so of oil that remains in the filter is sufficiently diluted by the 136 or so ounces of new oil. It's also troubling the oil analysis results are so strange between 5000 and 10,000 miles. The suggestion that the oil change interval be extended even further is also troubling, since that would void the vehicle's warranty if it is still under warranty.

Have you the seen the video from Automotive Press on "How often should you change your engine oil" with the chief Nissan GTR engineer? Or "Engine Oil Frequency: Engineer explains how often to change your oil and filter"? In your unique highway driving situation, it can work for you to do longer OCIs. Perhaps Blackstone might want to expand and further clarify (or tighten the criteria) in the "Insolubles" section in their data charts. Because, although the oil can still work and function decently, the Nissan Engineer notices other anamolies after taking apart hundreds of engines at very specific mileage intervals. Blackstone is just another business. Not the Delphi Oracle. 😉

Exactly! Oil analysis doesn't tell the whole story. It's leaving sludge and varnish that will eventually overtime cause issues
@hersheyroseman45082 ай бұрын
@@justinlee2642 it will if you look at the right values off the oil test. Lake speed Jr went over where too look at for important details past the wear metals.

A lot of the manufacturers oil change recommendations are for mostly highway driving. Short trips driving is considered ( severe duty) and change intervals should be much shorter.Whenever you hear about a vehicle that the engine lasts 500,000 miles it’s always a long haul vehicle!

Good Job on testing at 5-10K intervals, I will still continue to change at 50-60% on oil Monitor between 4500-6000K miles with Kirkland oil with BG MOA Additive even though I could go longer, this oil is economical and 2 times a year is good enough for me on 4 vehicles

The only way to really know is to open up the engine and see if it's getting sludge, etc. A mountain stream bed has a lot more in it than the water that comes out.

Does changing the oil at 5 or 10k miles cause more carbon buildup in the engine?
@gatorsms3 ай бұрын
Yes. If you see engine teardowns where the owner did 10,000 mile oil changes, the piston rings are so dirty that they no longer function. Modern engines have low-compression piston rings to reduce friction, but they get gummed up when the oil isn't changed frequently enough. A Blackstone oil analysis can show that the oil is still just fine, but it doesn't show what is happening inside the engine. It's very misleading, and unfortunate, for Blackstone to recommend even longer intervals. Not only would this void the warranty (if any) but it would further damage the engine. Spending $45 on oil analysis pays for two DIY oil changes, with filter and drain plug gasket. People get upset with the Car Care Nut recommending 5K oil changes because a Blackstone Oil Analysis shows that their oil is fine, but what they miss is the fact that the Blackstone Oil Analysis doesn't show the internal condition of the engine.

odd results decreasing additives then increasing. I wonder how accurate the test is … ie … what if you sent in 3 samples of the same oil at 5000k? Theoretically they should all be almost identical, but what if they are not?? Maybe the sample from the bottom of the oil pan (as soon as you crack the drain plug) is different than the oil from the top, and totally different if you took a sample after stirring all the drained oil?
