The problem with overt DEI hires is that it is arguable that they are not mentally diverse in reality. By that I mean, rather than bringing people from actually different walks of life and perspectives, they by & large just bring in monolithic psuedo-activists with the same set of intersectionality gripes (even if they check different boxes), unhinged disdain for ALL White people (even if the hire is White themselves), and hyper-partisan affiliation to the point of actively trying to get their seniors fired if ever discovered they don't share the exact same political values under the cries of "safe spaces". The louder a company speaks on DEI, the worse you can expect that company's toxic culture to be.

If it’s just outreach to try to find qualified workers who might not know that they have an opportunity at Costco that is great. If it’s de facto quotas, even if not stated quotas, and it includes coercion of its employees to behave in a way that is counter to their beliefs, or it prevents promotions of those who do not go along with the program then it is obviously wrong. While I generally agree with the underlying goals of DEI initiatives, I oppose the quota-based-check-the-box insulting implementation of it. I have been going to Costco for the better part of my life and have always noticed the diversity in the stores, and over the years, product offerings. They appear to have been doing this long before the DEI fad. I don’t think I’m alone in that assessment and will conclude that their version of DEI is not the same as the version that hires grifters to conduct struggle sessions to hate on white people.
@sgv37506 сағат бұрын
As Robbie mentioned, I think a lot of people conflate an outreach process to "DEI." That outreach still requires the people they ultimately hire to be the most qualified. Then extending that it kind of exacerbates the misjudgement of if someone who falls in that category makes a mistake, it can only be because they were an unqualified "DEI" hire, not because they're human, none of whom ever get anything 100% right. Nobody ever looks at someone who's background wouldn't put them in a DEI category (but which maybe afforded them some opportunities that others wouldn't have), as not being qualified and thus that privilege being the cause of their mistakes. They get more leeway to make mistakes without this kind of judgement. This makes this term's meaning extremely opaque at this point and the way in which people use it extremely hypocritical.

People love to conflate DEI. DEI just means trying to hire people who are underrepresented. People love to make it about race because it was mostly voiced by racial minorities, but people who have benefitted most from things like affirmative action were white woken and rural people (who were mostly white, too). Ironically, after affirmative action was removed, the % of minorities has not changed. I️ think Costco should do whatever it wants. It’s a private entity.
