How to verify Ferlin iron pieces

Great question! There are couple of things to look for: because the jewelry was produced by sand-casting (an item was pressed into damp sand to create the mold. When the sand dried, melted wax was poured into the impression and used to cast the iron) you can look for indications of this type of production - for example, coarseness to the surface; it can be tricky because a black lacquer and linseed oil was usually applied over top. It’s always helpful to have the “Gold gab ich für Eisen” (gold for iron), or a similar phrase and date. Both Neoclassical subjects & gothic revival motifs are also good indicators. I will try and find some more definitive tests 😁

My grandmother had some gold rings she described as costume jewelry. They had big synthetic stones and were only 10k, not 14k gold.

The minimum fineness of gold in order to be considered "gold" (and therefore fall into the 'fine' category) varies between countries, which has contributed to the confusions. Some prefer to simply say anything below 14k is costume... but this is a preference, and not quite technically correct.
