Thank you for this video! I'd like to take an old blazer, cut the blazer into the cat pattern I have and sew it onto 100% quilt cotton, quilted bag to use during October. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to go about this and what type of needle and thread do you recommend? Thank you!
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
There are a few ways to do this. I would start by cutting out the pattern a bit larger than the cat, hand tuck the edges in as it is pinned onto your cotton (use lots of pins) . Then hand stitch it down to hold in in place with a zigzag stitch over the edge of the folded fabric so you don't have raw edges. As you go the velvet will want to wiggle around so you may be constantly readjusting it. You may want to consider doing some stitching on top of the cat design to help hold it in place and give it a quilted appearance. If you do that start from the center and work your way to the edges. After you stitch the edges to hold it in place you may want to go over the edges again with a tighter stitch (this could be done by machine) to create a cleaner edge. There will be swearing, but persevere this project will be lovely and super cool when done! Good luck and post photos when you are done, I'd love to see the finished project!

@CostumeTrek thank you much!! I'm so new to sewing (couple months in) so I'm probably getting in way over my head, but I'm determined to have a soft touchy cat vs a boring quilt cotton cat!

Thank you for the wonderful information, Nola, but what is the best way to cut velvet to avoid all the little fuzzy bits?
@CostumeTrek5 жыл бұрын
Well, you will never avoid all the fuzzies, but I would do it the same way one cuts fur. From the back side (with the pile facing down) and try to slide your scissors between the pile, cutting the fabric. I'm working on a short tutorial on doing this with fur- so check back for better detail and visuals! Best of luck with your project! Send us pictures!!!

I am sewing an embroidery velvet blazer. Do you use facings on velvet? I read never to use fusible on velvet, I understand why but what about facings?
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
You could try it on a facing or on a scrap piece and see what you think. Some velvets iron better than others. Otherwise it's sew in interfacing

Hi please can you tell me how to add a gathered velvet frill or tear to a velvet 6 panel skirt. It's stretchy too. I was thinking of using some lace so the gather won't be too thick to put on the skirt. What do you think and can you offer any ideas thanks
@CostumeTrek4 жыл бұрын
The first advice I have when sewing stretch velvet is to sew it with a serger rather than a regular sewing machine, that will save a lot of headaches. Lace is a great idea! Let me know how it goes.

I am making my daughter's homecoming dress from a heavy, thick crushed velvet. How do I iron it?
@CostumeTrek3 жыл бұрын
Some crushed velvet can be ironed. Do a test on a scrap of the fabric and see how it fares. Otherwise steaming it from the back of the fabric works the best. If you don't have a steamer, hanging it the bathroom with a steamy show on can help.

What about when you have to sew it to itself while stretching

Script Screw up! In the video, Nola says that the make up of silk velvet is, the rayon is the base and the silk is the pile, when in fact the opposite is the case. The silk is the base, and the rayon is the pile. Ooooops!

If I'm making a dress with a train, would the polyester velvet work just as okay as Silk Velvet?
@CostumeTrek3 жыл бұрын
Either could work. Silk velvet has a softer drape and polyester is a bit stiffer, but it could work. I might consider putting some drapery weights in the hem to give it more of a draping effect, but that might not be necessary.
@millyshona50074 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great information. One question: How do you hem velvet? Must you use bias tape of another fabric? Can velvet be made into bias tape?
@CostumeTrek4 жыл бұрын
The best way is bias of another fabric, but it is possible to make bias from velvet, you just have to be careful.

How do you sew contour darts on velvet?
@CostumeTrek Жыл бұрын
Essentially the same way as you would with any other fabric, but with more pins...and bad words! Another option is to hand baste it first, then machine sew, skipping the pins. Good luck!
