I'm done with air mattresses, they are very prone to punctures and after that you are miserable. Bought a lightweight cot and never looked back. Very comfortable

Yes, with mattresses even if nothing goes bad, you still have to add some air almost every night. And if it gets a hike, we'll then that's it

Tip for attaching the cot fabric to the metal base: Attach each end in order of diagonals. For example, attach the top left corner, then the bottom right corner. Next attach the top right corner, then the bottom left corner. The fabric stretches easier that way. This trick also works for fitted sheets on beds at home!

Thank you for your suggestion! I'm going to try it although I have tried everything, even similar things to your suggestion haha. Since then I got another fit, lightweight and is a breeze to put together.

@@Huntress308 I wouldn't do that unless you can't find another way, that cot is going to lose the drum tightness that makes it comfortable to sleep on, well I guess unless you don't care if the cot is tight, but for a man probably not the best since we are normally heavier so we can more easily bottom out on the bars underneath.

That's true, very good point. I definitely use the space underneath to store things. And that itself also serves as insulation

I opted for putting a mattress on an elevated, ultralight cot. The cot is very easy to put together. The mattress is not a pure air mattress, it has some foam in it. The mattress has also its downsides. It is super comfortable, but due to the foam the pack size is ridiculous. Only car camping. For motorcycle, I have to find something else. Advantage is that the mattress does not get punctured, and it adds to the seat height considerably. Also, as cots by themselves are too hard for me, I can adjust the firmness by adding or removing air from the mattress.

Tip when setting up the support bars on each end of the cot. Place the first bar like you always have (it is easy to connect this bar). The last bar slide it through and attach 1 side of it. Stand the cot upright and place your foot on the side of the bar you are connecting last and push down with your foot. Next tilt the cot in the opposite direction and slide it into the hole in the support bar. Standing the cot upright and using your foot gives more leverage and works every time (no tools needed).

I’m older now than when I started camping some 50 years ago. I would go with a cot if you can. I always had a rock or a tree root that I ended up on ,and the mattress was flat or near flat in the morning. Even with my low cot and crawling out the tent backwards is better than a air mattress .

You are very welcome! I was trying to stay neutral in the video because both mattress and cot have their benefits but overall I do prefer a cot. When I first started camping, I used a thin foam pad (not sure how much it helped) and a sleeping bag, and it was definitely uncomfortable. Sleeping in the ground was too hard and cold. A mattress is already an upgrade, but I think a cot is even better. My only problem is that a nice tight cot is too hard for me to put together, so I ended up buying one last year that's not that tight. It's a breeze to open and close (5 seconds), but it's not as good to sleep on. I guess it's a happy medium. You definitely sacrifice comfort for ease of setting up (unless you're a super strong guy, then nothing is a problem 😆)

Thank you! Yes you're right, the mattress is great in the warmer months. I've slept in a mattress for 2 years, well first just on the ground and that was so uncomfortable. So the mattress seemed awesome after that. But after 2 years having a few mattresses give out in the middle of the trip and not. Ring able to level it I switched to the cot and I think it's more comfortable. Just putting it together is a pain in the butt lol

Keep up the great info in the videos. Maybe I didn't hear you right, but I've found in the Winter months, a cot is MUCH colder to sleep on. My Dad said the same thing and quit using a cot in the Winter.

Thank you so much! I never tried a matters in the winter, only spring through the fall and at night I was often cold. I could feel the cold coming up from the ground. So I never tried it in the winter months with the mattress, I could only imagine how cold I would be. Then when I got a cot, I was never cold and eventually tried it even in the snow, even without a tent but by that time I got a 0 degree sleeping bag. So I actually don't know if I would be cold on a mattress in the winter, but the cot was perfect.

3:38 ohh it can happen right away! (And fairly often if you're unlucky.) Lean that air bed on a wooden splinter you hadn't seen, pack it away and a fairly sharp object manages to find its way up against it, etc. Even just putting too much stress on it while folding, especially if cold where the material is more brittle. That's the reason i'm resarching cots at the moment (thanks for the vid).
@Huntress308
@Huntress308 3 жыл бұрын
You are so right! And eventually, mattresses will just give out. Once when I was camping with my daughter, her mattress deflated by the seems just separating. It was a loud pop and a 3-4 inch long hole. That mattress was fairly new. With cots you're not going have anything unexpected like that, so for that reason they're better. More reliable

You probably know this by now, but if you go on KZbin you can find out how to stretch the cot by standing it up vertically, and placing your foot on the end of the pole in order to pop it into place. Push down with your foot while lifting the cot just enough to catch it on the pole, then snap it into place. Works for me.

This video was definitely helpful. I purchased two foldable cots from Amazon that came with a thin, but nice pad. Based on the section of this video that shows how you have to set up your cot, and the room it takes up when in its bag, the one I purchased do not appear to take up any more (or at least much more) room than yours does. These you simply on fold them and they are set up.

Thank you so much. Since the video I kinda fixed the cot so I could set it up and still use it here is the link if you would like to check it out kzbin.info/www/bejne/en6VqnaBZ7KKosk It works pretty well, not as tight as it would be otherwise but at least I'm not struggling 😊 I have another cot, it's very lightweight, folds up into a small package and is pretty comfortable but doesn't seem as sturdy. I'm sure it is, maybe I just need to use it more. It's a bit more narrow, which I'm not crazy about
@brianh.000
@brianh.000 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice! One note with the tight cot--I think I have the exact same one you have shown (others do not have the same problem). It is very tight, and I can't put it together by hand. I braced my feet, and pulled and pulled, and couldn't get it the cross brace in. What worked was a long, straight bar (a strong branch should do). Line the cross piece up, and use the branch/bar as leverage to pull it in. When I bring the cot, I'll definitely bring something to help put it together (a broom, axe, hammer, shovel, etc.)

I have learnt the hard way with a normal cheap airbeds, this was before I was wondering why I was always cold every night. Thought it was just me who gets cold too easily or just had crappy sleeping bags. Until someone says I need to get R value self inflate mats, boy that was a life change for me and I never felt the chill after that! Unsure how long it will last as only brought it. So can't wait to give the cot a try, never slept on one before.

Have you tried the cot since then ? It's nIce if it's very tight. You can also level it if you're on a slope (even if on a slight slope), you can't do that with the mattress. If anything, your head needs to be higher than your body, not lower, I've found that if I'm laying where my head is even slightly lower, I have crazy nightmares. This is on a cot or even a nice bed in an rv. But the problem is, on a mattress you'll be sliding, in any way, sideways, up or down, at least that's happened to me every time. On a cot, no sliding, but like I said you can level it by putting something under the legs. With the mattress, it's impossible

I have tried a few options. A sleeping pad is a third option as some are insulated. with the folding cot unless your very light avoid the aluminion ones they fail go with the 3 legged steel army type. great for storing gear ideal if your sharing a tent with a mate as it keeps it tidy. Another positive is you can sit up and get dressed alot easier than sitting on the floor. packdown/setup is instant. negative they are very bulky and not ideal for motorbikes they also suck if you side sleep.the more expensive multilegged ones about £80 have a tilted head end. im going away next week and everything will fit in a 120L holdall except my cot so now im looking at other options
@Huntress308
@Huntress308 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this information! For me, a sleeping pad probably would t work. I'm a side sleeper but I toss and turn from side to back to other side. And one thing I don't like is that if you're on a bit of a slope, you'll be rolling or sliding and it's not good. I did that on my mattress and my sleeping pad when I first started camping. But now, I know they make better ones, although I don't think they can fix the slope roll / slide

*One of the big benefits of a cot is being able to store your gear under the cot* . I own that exact same cot, it is hard to get it set up, but for me not so much due to how hard it was to pull, but because it was a black bar, with a black nub, trying to fit into a black hole. The easiest way I found to do it is to sit on the ground and use your feet to hold the cot in place and pull with your arms. I am a full grown man though, so IMO that's not going to be easy for a woman. Teton has a cot with a mechanism that makes putting that bar on easy, but the Teton is $100 is heavy, and built like a tank. I have tired the Colman II, Onetigris, and Teton cot. All of them are made very well, just excellent quality cots. Out of all of them the Onetigris is the lightest (just a few lbs), easiest, and smallest cot to put together (23"X6"). It is also the most expensive at about $150, but I think any woman your young boy could put together, but it also takes the longest to set up by a lot. (unless you're not strong enough to put the bar in a Colman, then it might take just as long). The Onetigris also has 16 legs (optional) so you will have to pick your cot up to put your bags under it, if you don't use the legs there is no room at all. The Colman II ($50-60) gives the widest sleeping area but is also the hardest to put the bars in, but also the cheapest, also has plenty of room for storage under the cot. The Teton ($100) is the strongest 400lb weight limit, built like a tank, but also heavy. It is also the tallest off the ground and you can easily put your gear under the cot, and if your taller is the easiest to stand up from.

I'm lookin to get another cot, I'm not in a rough but I'm starting keep my eye open. I want something that's easier to put together but it will be just this sturdy. Seems like the Teton cot could be the one. I don't mind if it's heavy since it's just going from my truck to the campsite but I'll do some research. Thank you so much for all this information, it's very very helpful !!
@Valkaneer
@Valkaneer Жыл бұрын
@@Huntress308 Ya, that Teton is a beast of a cot, thick fabric like a heavy duty canvas, and thicker metal all around.. I think it would last for decades. The Ontigris is super light, and easily the best if you need space, but the side poles are round instead of square, so if your arm is touching the sides it feels a lot better. Also if you need to be lower to the ground you can choose not to put the legs on at all and then it's sitting about 8" off the ground maybe. I think all 3 are good cots, you can't go wrong IMO with one of these 3. The crazy thing is each cot has distinct strong points, so it makes it really hard to decide which I like best.

That's true. That's always true. But I'm n my opinion, even a very expensive mattress will have the same problems. And probably much heavier, which might not be a problem for a lot of people. But cots, of course, if you invest some money, you will have a better experience. I bought a new cot, a little more expensive (still not top of the line, more like mid-level), it's super easy to set up and break down, but it's much heavier. And the bed part is not as tight as the other one, so it's not quite that comfortable, but you often have to sacrifice one thing for another. I'm just glad I don't have to struggle with putting it together.

Well, in my opinion one disadvantage a mattress has that if you're not on a complexity level ground, you can't fix it. And you will have a bad night sleep sliding down or up, or rolling off your mattress and wake up every hour. With a cot, you can compensate. Also there is more insulation with a cot, the mattress is on the ground and it will suck your heat up. Sure, you can buy some expensive sleeping pad but then might as well buy a more expensive cot.

I was using an old beat up sleeping pad, just because I had it lol but just recently threw it away. If I buy a new one, for the cot, I don't think I'll spend a lot of money lol.

Yes! When I would wale up in the middle of the night, feeling the cold air coming from the ground, through the mattress I wasn't happy. I was shivering and everything lol.

Thanks for doing this. New to this and appreciate your video. I was thinking about a cot & mat combo for the (more often than not) wet and cold weather we get here in Scotland. Any thoughts?

Hi. Putting a mattress on a cot is not a bad idea at all, a lot of people do it.

I'll be buying my 1st cot. But I would add a mat or so to add more insulation to keep you warm. Good luck :)

Jens Williamson, III (Deaf) You did a good job about the cot vs. the air bed. I prefer the cot if the camping or in a tent because the bugs will not bother me at all. Good Point! I prefer the air bed at home once (can have sex) because of no bugs. Lol Good? 😂 I am clever.... It is your decision! I can't run your life. I am so good. I respect you all. Thanks for your time. Have a good year in 2022! Respectfully, Jens Williamson, III 😎😷👍🇺🇲 Bexar County 🇨🇱 The camping expert! The Former Boy Scout in Blanco, Texas and Austin, Texas. I agree with you that the cot is better while camping but the mattress is better in the way that it's bigger (and yes it would be hard to have sex on the cot lol) Thank you so much for watching !!

Just a thought. I don't know if it works or not but could you use a cot with a single person air mattress on top tied to the cot to stop it from sliding around. That way you combine both
@Huntress308
@Huntress308 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it would work. I don't even think it would slide around; I guess it depends on the fabric but I don't think you have to tie it down.

Yes. This type of camping, with a cot or mattress is done with the truck parked nearby. When you backpack, no cot, no mattress just a lightweight sleeping bag and a good sleeping pad

I think you're right about that although since I'm usually single, I barely remember haha. But a mattress is very cheap, so it's easily replaceable lol

Not sure what is so hard to understand. 😊 Most people use either a cot or a mattress. Some use both, but most don't. This video was a compare and contrast between the two so people can make a better decision hopefully. Thank you for watching though.

@@Huntress308you definitely helped me decide! I have an air mattress, but I'm planning to camp out for the solar eclipse here in April 8th, and weather might get down to 2C. I definitely don't want to lose heat to the air mattress, so I'm planning on getting an Atorpok cot. Found a new one on a local auction site, so hoping to get it really cheap.

I think one of those strong gorilla tapes could hold up for a while. If the puncture is not big. I one had a complete split at the seam, nothing could help that.

I respectfully disagree. Air mattresses are warmer than cots because there is less air flow. In winter i use a mattress , in summer a cot.
@Huntress308
@Huntress308 3 жыл бұрын
I totally get it. Mattresses and cots might work differently for everyone. All I know is that in the winter when I was laying on my mattress, the cold seeped through. With the cot, it didn't, and when I put things underneath (bags, fire wood, whatever) for insulation, it worked really well. But I did like the size of the mattress, I could really stretch out and have my 3 dogs with me, so choosing one over the other is not easy. It's best to have both, like you're doing. Thank you for watching and for your opinion! I really appreciate it!
