I've been camping with all kinds of shitty mats for 30 years now. About 3 years ago I bought this exact Exped mat from Snowy's for a 6 week trip to Cape York and I couldn't be happier. I'm a heavy guy and It was comfy and easy to pack up as we pretty much moved camp daily. I have since also purchased this exact Zempire mat for the Mrs (she didn't come to the Cape) but haven't actually used It yet but I can say that laying on them side by side, I can't feel any huge difference. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these types of mats and I will never use any other type of mattress again for camping, they are that good. (IMHO) Happy camping guys :)

I've had my Zempire Monstamat for over a year, very comfortable and warm when camping however packed down its really quite large, bigger than my 4P tent packed down. I'd still recommend it based on price, reliability and comfort but the pack size may be an issue if you're short on space.

Great review, really helpful! One tip though about the Sea to Summit, you can turn around the middle valve and make it ‘deflate only’. Just so you know 😊
@SnowysOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yep, you can! Important to note, the valve flap isn't supposed to be removed - alot of people try to do it to push it in from the other side instead of twisting the whole plug - result in the centre 'pin' stretching out and the valve flap not sealing properly, or coming loose. You can also just gently push the valve flap for fine tuning firmness aswell - similar to an Exped. Thanks for your comment! ~ Lauren

I plan on using one of these for motorcycle camping where weight is less of an issue than size. I've narrowed my choices down to the Exped or the Sea to Summit but I'm leaning toward the Sea to Summit as it's a bit smaller. I've had enough of the Thermarest X-Lite it's small but brutal to sleep on. One of the best gear reviews ever. They are not paying you enough.

Hi mate. First of all your product videos are outstanding. They’ve really helped me with making decisions on gear. I have had the zempire monstamat for a couple of years and I find that when I wake up the foam under my shoulder has collapsed and I am touching the ground. I find myself constantly adjusting the inflation level through the night and have struggled to get a good night’s sleep. My question is have you had similar feedback on this mat? Or does it sound like I may have a leak in the valve? I would consider upgrading to a the exped megamat if this turns out to be a common problem with the zempire mat specifically. FYI I am certainly not asking for warranty purposes. I actually bought this mat from a different store and it is well past its warranty anyway.

I've got the monstmat king single...ive.had it for about 1.5 to 2yrs....used it maybe 10-12 times I think....I have 2 BTW...in my experience, they aren't full self inflatable, probably to 80% ...you need to manually blow....ours have also become less self inflatable over time...I would estimate its now down to 50%, and it becomes an effort to get it fully inflated (or thereabouts)....one of the mats is also leaking, I suspect via the valve somehow....can't see how, can't see why.....by the time morning comes around your basically sleeping with no cushioning......I paid $200 each for our mats....I couldn't fault them in the first 12 months, but given all of the above, they're not that great for the price.
@SnowysOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
This type of may will generally only self inflate to around the 80% mark, Andy, and then require some extra air to make them firm. As for the Monstamat, we sell loads of these with a lot of positive feedback. It's not unreasonable to think an inflatable product like this can get a puncture too, often the small, slow leaking punctures like you describe are the most annoying and hard to find. You can identify where the leak is by inflating it firmly and spraying with soapy water, you'll see bubbles forming where the leak is and you can repair this with a dab of sealant. ~ Ben

We recently picked up very the similar Wanderer Premium 4x4, I didn’t see any of these other mattresses in our local store but they have been fantastic, we used to sleep on 170mm of mattress, 70mm kings big daddy deluxe foam and then 100mm kings self inflating mattress. I’m around 125kg and the 100mm wanderer is far superior in comfort and size. I think one of the best features of any type of mattress like these is the outer layer is bonded to the foam, but still flexible, so no ballooning at one end of mattress
@SnowysOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
The Wanderer brand is specific to BCF, Delta Window Cleaning. It's a slightly different mat to the ones in this video though, being that it is heavier likely on account of thicker fabrics and possibly doesn't have cored foam. Great video I have a Zempire - do you sell or can you recommend any air pump to 1 - Put extra air in to help with firmness and 2 - to suck air out to make it as flat as possible as I have an iKamper
@SnowysOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
It's not recommended to use an air pump on self inflating mats, johngadget, especially for inflation as it can cause irreparable damage. There is probably less chance of damage for deflation, but I'm not aware of any compact pumps that would have the power to suck the air out of a self-inflating mat. ~ Ben

There are a few options in the sub $200 range, Joop. Zempire mats are good value and their Bomberpad offers 7.5cm of thickness at a good price - www.snowys.com.au/bomberpad-3d-camp-mattress. I use these for my girls - www.snowys.com.au/comfort-plus-self-inflating-wmns-sleeping-mat, but they are not made of a super tough material and kind of balance comfort with lightweight. These - www.snowys.com.au/camp-mat-self-inflating-sleeping-mat are a tougher and really affordable option but are only 3.8cm thick, which may still be adequate for young kids. Their r-value is 4.0 which is suitable for most climates, you may need to add something underneath in the depths of winter. What I find comfortable is likely to be different to the next person though, Egbert. We do sit and lay on the mats when we review each one individually, you can find these video reviews on our website. As for pack size, it's not realistic for most of the population to be able to pack the mats up to the size they are out of the factory so we try and be realistic in our demonstrations. Some people will be able to roll them tighter, others will struggle to roll it at all. We don't want to be elite with the gear we well, we prefer to be all-inclusive. ~ Ben

Can you fold those matts in half length ways ?
@SnowysOutdoors10 ай бұрын
Not on the singles, it doesnt work very well at all and you end up with a huge pack size. It also creates a weak point in the foam down the centre. You can do it with the doubles, it effects them less and the foam crease doesnt really impact comfort as most people sleep on either side. If you do want to fold it for whatever reason I'd say only do it for transport. Store it rolled correctly, or open and flat. ~ Lauren

It depends on how tightly you have the mat inflated, Disillusioned1811. Without the valves in i.e. no pressure, they will fold pretty easily. The All Terrain mattresses from Darche are a little different in their design, Luke, but they still offer a good night of sleep. The All Terrain mattress is made with a heavier PVC exterior and I don't think the foam has been cored so it does not pack down quite as small as the mats in this video. The benefits of this heavier style of mat is that the foam is still supportive in the event of getting a puncture. ~ Ben

@@gregdogg10 I've never actually seen one sorry, they look like a new product and we may not have actually had any in our stores yet. I've followed this up with our purchasing team. I have tried the 15cm Exped mat though, and I think the extra thickness would be good for those needing extra depth in the mat for shoulders to sink in a little. Anyone who sleeps on their back will probably be carrying extra weight and bulk for little benefit over the 10cm mats. Hope that helps. ~ Ben

We don't have the Exped medium sizes sorry, Straight Outta Isolation. The only 1100 self inflating mat we have is the Darche All Terrain Mattress in the 1100 size (www.snowys.com.au/atm-all-terrain-mattress-1100). This isn't really equivalent to the mats in this video though as it is much heavier and bulkier. Sorry we couldn't be of much more help. ~ Ben

How long to fully inflate them. I've heard 5 to 10mins from a different store, but I think the reality is an hour or more on a new mat. I don't know if that will get quicker the longer I have it?
@SnowysOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
It will take a few days when you very first get it @komakaze komakaze, as its been factory compressed for a long time. Having it in a warm room can really help this inital inflate. I would recommed a few hours for the first few uses, but once you've slept your mat in and had a few trips you wouldnt need more than 1/2hr. ~ Lauren

@SnowysOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
It is much the same as the existing mat, you just need to give it time for the air to escape, but you'll likely end up with a more compact swag once it's packed away. I use a self inflating mat in my double swag, pack up is pretty similar to the foam mat that came with it. ~ Ben
@SnowysOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@Master Yoshi any of these will do the job, but you'll have trouble finding something to the exact dimensions. Most of these double mats are about 130cm wide, so you won't fill up the width. You can get a Darche mat that is 1400 wide but they will be much bulkier than the mats in this video - www.snowys.com.au/atm-all-terrain-mattress-1400. ~ Ben

I have never used any self inflating mats and would like to know how bad is it if during camping the mat gets slightly punctured (airbeds are totally ruined after a few days of use outside). Is it still usable, "fixable" or how durable are these? Thanks!
@SnowysOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ronan. A self inflating mat will be better than an airbed should a puncture occur, but comfort will still be lessened. The foam inside will still provide some padding and insulation, but most of the support in the mat will be lost should it go flat. These are durable in the sense that they are not easily punctured if used in line with their intended purpose, but there is always a risk of this with any inflatable product. The best course of action is to make sure you clear the ground beneath the mat prior to setup and make sure you don't walk on the mat too much in the tent, especially with shoes on. Should a puncture occur then they can be repaired, and most mats come with a small repair kit of sorts to do this. Alternatively some repair glue such as Seam Grip will do the job, the tricky part is finding the puncture. ~ Ben

These are great until you realise you have to store these fully inflated and only roll them up when you intend to take them on your next camping trip. Leaving them rolled up for prolonged period will damage the foam inside makings the mattress unable to inflate. Plus you can’t get any moisture inside either as this will also damage the foam… We had two double mattresses storing them inflated in our house was impossible, who has spare space to keep to inflated mattresses for months at a time??
@SnowysOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Storing them deflated doesn't necessarily damage them, HJC, as long as they are stored dry, but it does mean that the foam will take longer to inflate when you go to use them next. Best practice is to store them inflated, but that's not always practical. I store mine semi-deflated and rolled up inside my swag and it's still functional after almost 10 years of use. ~ Ben

Hey Ben, we are looking for a queen mattress and realize that most Exped, Zempire, Sea to Summit and Black Wolf are all in the 130 to 132cm range wide. Recently scrounging the Snowys site we see that Black Wolf also do a queen 3d diamond that is 150w. Struggling to locate much detail on that diamond mattress and it's not on the BW website at all. What's your thoughts on the diamond hexatherm over the standard hexatherm, and why is there such a large cost difference?
@SnowysOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, the Hexatherm and 3D Hexatherm are on par when it comes to quality. Black Wolf introduced the Hexatherm 3D Diamond in larger sizes, in particular a queen sized mat. The cost difference comes down to numerous factors, the 3D Diamond Mats are new and prices on new products can be volatile, it can take years for it to settle down. We offer them at our best everyday price up front though, never at full RRP. ~ Ben

I'm not hiding anything, Hoo Hragh. It would actually be unrealistic of me to lay on the mat and tell everyone whether or not someone else will find them comfortable as I've no idea what the next person prefers in a sleeping mat. Fact is, they are all comparable as they are all a slab of foam encased in fabric with air inside with which you can adjust the pressure for individual comfort. The main comparisons are build quality, weight and packed size, all details you can find in the specifications and reviews section for each product on our website. ~ Ben

Hello, DENMONKEY! :-) Just some info from a fellow consumer, + a Snowy's fan (I have a lot of time on my hands ATM, so I've been weighing in occasionally on these videos, to try to help out fellow campers). The Zempire MonstaMat model in this video is the extra-wide, King Single type version, which is 77cm wide; the original Single model, with that same 10cm thickness, is 69cm, & only $200 (with these guys). Zempire also do have a slimmer product, called the Bomber Pad, which has the same boxed sides but is 63cm wide, + 7.5cm high instead of 10, at $150, which might be a bit kinder to your hip pocket if you're currently looking. Additionally, there is a Coleman High Peak version of this 10cm style (a more recent product than this video, so they gave it its own one, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIfNnmitmLlkoNk ), which is 68cm wide for $190. I'm not affiliated in any way with the store, I just buy a lot of my gear from them as they offer free delivery with no minimum, & I was specifically recently comparison shopping for a new cushy mat (& browsing across BCF, Tentworld, Freddy's and Amazon, too). I hope this helps! :-) [Edit: a measurement.]
