Let me tell ya, I love using my metal detector to scan the tree base for metal objects before cutting. Costs a little bit of money, you need to read up on how to use them but I have saved a ton of money on scanning tree bases where I'm cutting. I've found everything from very small nails to huge fencing staples and a few trees on one area in Southern Arizona that was used for target practice with bullets lodged in them. It only takes a few minutes to ensure you are cutting through wood and nothing else.

For my big saws I use a full chisel but you’d be amazed at what a semi chisel will tolerate and still cut. I use that for all my medium saws.

I cut right beside a railroad spike in a large sweet gum. It severely hardened one side of the chain. I tried to save it but it was miserable to file that one side. I forgot and loaned it to a friend of mine who was an old school logger and he tried to sharpen it. We had a big laugh about it.

Just bought a MS400C w/20" b&c last week. Haven't been able to use it much. Too much in the woods right now.

The only time (so far, knocking on wood) I have suffered an injury while chain sawing was due to misreading a stressed limb on a blow-down beech. As the cut neared finish, the limb triggerd toward me cutting the bottom of my right forearm in two places to the bone. It looked exactly like someone had slashed me with Crocodile Dundee's "knife" while I was trying to defend with the arm. I wrapped it with kitchen plastic wrap and black tape, ate dinner and wife drove me to ER for stitches were she was suspected of having slashed me. They finally believed me and sewed me up using the wrong kind of stitches which did not disolve after healing and had to be cut out a year or two later. Even an experienced cutter and misjudge those tensioned limbs!

I hate metal in trees! When I suspect it I use an old chain or box store type chipper chain.. and keep my file handy..

If I were cutting into the brash like that I would use stihl duro chain. I save my regular chain for higher cuts. Good though. Metal and any chain though that's unlucky.

That 362 with that size bar and chain was cutting good. Is it a 20"?
@viperstrike38273 жыл бұрын
I think it is an ms400.
@williamjordan54143 жыл бұрын
@@viperstrike3827 The one he started with was but when he hit the metal he switched to the 500i and the 362 I believe. I'm pretty sure on the largest pecan tree he was using the 500i to fell it and the 362 to trim it. I might be wrong though.

362 has a 20” bar on it. I hit metal with 400 and 25” bar. Then did rest of cut down with the 500.
