Martinez was over the hill, bad knees and at the end of his career for sure. You have to give him respect because he was beaten from the first round and fought with a warrior’s heart and great courage. Cotto has excellent boxing skills and fought a brilliant fight. He took command and landed good punches when the opportunity was there, defended well when it wasn’t, and showed great patience when he had Martinez hurt…never got excited and reckless. Cotto gave us some great fights.

Wow, I've never seen a boxer with a knee brace on both legs and didn't even know that was permitted within the rules! I think it hampered Martinez rather than helped him in the end. It looked like he couldn't get the full extension on his legs and, as such, couldn't get away quickly enough or square himself to deliver power to his shots, although he did have some good rounds in the fight, his best being 3 and 6. Even so, an absolute clinic by Cotto! Thank you Top Rank for archiving his legacy here! PS, as a Playstation gamer exclusively since '07, I dug the PS4 loading bar as the round indicator!

@@javiersalazar713 Well, had it been common knowledge that his knee surgery wasn't a 100% success, and that he needed to wear knee braces when doing any sort of movements. Well, the odds would not have been in Sergio's side. The healthy Martinez that dismantled Kelly Pavlik would have defeated Cotto, however, we got a shadow of his former self. It was clear from the opening bell that he did not have the same foot work. Not Cotto's fault, and he took care of business like he was supposed to against a lame duck. It is not one of Cotto's greatest accomplishments, I think beating Margarito in the second fight (despite his style being tailor made for Margarito) was one of his greatest accomplishments. This win is no different than his win against Yuri Foreman, another boxer that relied on movement, yet went into the ring with bad knees (FYI- Yuri can still fight, even with the limited mobility).

About the most you bad you can say about Martinez in this fight is that he shouldn't have been in their knowing damn well he ruined his knees in the Julio Cesar Chavez jr fight. HardworkandDedication simple i disagree. Martinez wouldn’t have been able to get away from cotto to begin with. @@rodsaunders8832 Cotto is my 2nd favorite fight behind Mayweather from that era. But Cotto would have got chopped by Martinez late from Rd 6 on. Cotto is great cutting off the ring but he sacrifices defense to do it and confuses himself when strong fire is returned. Martinez can fight of the back foot when he has a good knee so Martinez right hook would have set Cotto up down the line for the left hand. Cotto gets confused in the middle of ring when he can't find a way in and the tell that he is confused is he start doing extra foot flourishes for no fucking reason. Finally Cotto best work is to the body leave him open to counters from the longer Martinez. This fight Martinez, a guy who keeps his hands low had no effective head movement. Martinez a soccer player, had no real foot work in this fight. Cotto did the right thing throwing the hook and getting to safe angle cause Martinez a person with a bad knee couldn't even match that simple movement. To disagree is to ignore reality of the situation. Martinez was wounded animal in there. This wasn't a top shelf win for Cotto say like his win over Zab Judah a slick, south paw whom he did put on a great performance against.
