Have you ever done a mystery quilt before? I participated in one many years ago and it was a disaster! So, for the first time in 25+ years, I am trying it again! Cotton Cuts asked me to be one of the ambassador for the Fall 2023 Puzzle Mystery Series Carnival! How exciting!
Here's how it works if you choose to sign up for it:

Kris. I just watched your blog about cotton cuts. Ive ordered the ring toss. Ive watched quite a few of the content creaters that have done other bom's from cotton cuts. One thing i like about them is they are all cut and all u have to do is put the block together. I cant wait to get the first one. Good luck and hope you'll enjoy it.

You have me interested. I have never heard of a mystery quilt before. Yes, I know, where have I been? haha I am looking forward to seeing how this all comes together. I definitely like the idea of all the fabrics being coordinated. I am hopeless at that.

You can't know everything, right? LOL! Seriously though, I think they were really popular in the mid-90s and are making a comeback in the last five years or so. Not that they weren't around between then, but they didn't seem to be as popular. I am excited, nervous, hopeful, all of it!

I am sorry to hear of your bad experience with mystery quilts to begin with, My first few times they didn't cost anything, they were offered through my quilt guild. I love the idea of the fabrics already selected (and cut) I might actually get it done. 🙂

Thank you! Avoiding mystery quilts because of my one bad experience has stopped me for far too long. Time to break this! LOL! I am still waiting on my first kit. I think you are a bad influence - just kidding! I had so much fun with you and the Missouri Star Advent calendar that I just have to do this. Of course, like most of us, the last thing I need is another project. I have done 1 mystery quilt and it was from a Quilt Magazine. Since they are only published every 2 months, there was only 6 installments. The instructions were very clear and went into great detail about the value needed to get a good end result. One used their own fabric so I was able to pull it all from stash. It was a lot of fun.

I did (started!) a murder mystery quilt last year. I am an VERY confident beginner to intermediate quilter, I quilted for years and then didn't for 10 years and restarted. I felt very drawn to this BOM idea that came with a new chapter to the book and was soooo excited. The clues to the murder were "in the quilt squares" The website said "beginner friendly" so I paid my fee and bought fabric in the color suggestions listed. First month was ok-ish with directions and the chapter was ... LIGHT to say the least. 9 pages large print and double spaced. Then after a cpl months the directions started getting more vague and the chapters less well written and almost rushed. The blocks were getting VERY difficult with foundation paper piecing the tiniest pieces imaginable.... like smaller than my pinky nail tiny. And then came the HUGE! star that would later be the focal point. I cut my fabric according to directions the day it came out then there was an update to the size of strips the next day. Wasted all my fabrics and couldn't find same ones in some cases. More tiny foundation piecing followed. I DID improvise on the huge (32-33 inch maybe bigger)focal star and on another one of the foundation pieced blocks but got them finished. Refusing to read the chapters that were so far ahead of me by this point as a reward for getting them done. So I now am in July with all these pieces and still dont know who did it. Of course the last cpl chapters were down to 5 or 6 pages so at this point why even read it? lol

Oh my goodness! This sounds just awful! You would think they would have had the entire things planned prior to offering this experience! I am so sorry about this. I really is difficult to recover from an experience like this. Hugs! 🥰

I have done some mysteries but never lived the results or I have made 2 because of fabric selection. I found that I collect the clues until the revel then I know what I am dealing with and can make better fabric choices. I also take note of tips and tricks as the weeks progress. I even do this with QAL so that I better understand each weeks or months new tip or trick.

I have heard from so many people that they have enjoyed going out of their comfort zone with our PMQs. Maybe because the color is new but the coordinated fabric is already chosen??? We are excited you are joining us! Which colorway did you select?

The same thing happened to me. I had to take a day off from work to make the class each month. On three different class days the owner of the shop (who was the teacher) did not show. Her husband told us that she forgot about the class (and was in another town). The last time was the last straw. I demanded the rest of the instruction sheets and the fabric kits to finish the quilt. It took me a while; but, I finished the quilt and won 2 blue ribbons for it. I was shorted fabric and other items in the last kits; however, her shop was not the only shop to carry 1930's prints.

@@SewtheDistance I stopped shopping at that quilt shop. I learned more from KZbin. I can always watch a teaching video as many times as I need (to understand.) Plus, I don't have to take a day off from work to attend a class.

The Village Green PMQ is my first one and I have signed up for the Carnival PMQ, I will be doing the Large Bombpop as I was going to do the Flannel Cake but beign on the west coast by the time I woke up it was sold out. oh well.

I purchased 2 mystery quilts in prior years. One is still in all the packages because they didn't have any videos and it was definitely beyond my abilities. I finished the second one but it is the only quilt I have made that got no response from my husband. I don't do scant 1/4" so I had to do a lot of fudging to get it done.

I just can't bring myself to do a mystery quilt. What if I don't like it, is my fear. Kris, a question about material. Do you always buy from quilt stores ($)? I was taught they are best, because they have more than 1 or 2 processes that other sources may have, but it's so expensive.

I’m so nervous, too! What if I hate it? I am hoping it is a good move. We will see! As for fabric, this is such a hot topic! I love quilt shop fabric and buy it often. I love the feel of it, the new lines that come out, all of it! That said, I’ve been using more and more less expensive fabrics (Joann’s, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, etc.) and have had a lot of success. I think for me it comes down to what I am making, who I am making it for, and all those other things we consider. It’s definitely a personal choice for sure. I say use whatever you are comfortable with it. I hope this helps! ❤️

I’ve had disappointing experiences with mystery quilts. I’m an experienced quilter, but I struggled with unclear instructions, requirements for specific rulers that I would not have needed had instructions been clear, and unsatisfactory fabric placement and choices. I’m guessing that if it were a kit it would be much more satisfying.

Discovered that I HATE mystery quilts also. I am a visual learner, if I can see what I'm doing...it's a mess. Both I attended, quit the project 25% of the way in. I'm more interested in UFO retreats.

I am a new sewer, and participating in the PMQ Village Green is one of my very first projects. I am actually gaining a lot of confidence sewing this together. I love that I didn't have to choose and cut my own pieces. And they are coming together beautifully. I am excited to see it come together, as the final layout is a complete mystery until the end.
