How I process home grown cotton on my small hand-crank gin. Gin from here: www.cottonacre.... Though be warned, mine arrived 6 months late and broken.

Fascinating! This is the first time I’ve seen how a cotton gin works. It seems so simple, but I can only imagine how it revolutionized cotton production. Thanks!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! This gin is actually different from the one that revolutionized cotton production. The gin that is used in most processing relies on blades that grab the cotton fiber where this one uses rollers and pressure. 😊

cool to see these traditional tools. I wouldn't want to have to crank that all day!
@experimentno.18105 жыл бұрын
I think the original gins were a little different design with blades instead of rollers, but yes, it is exhausting to crank the gin for an extended period of time.

@@experimentno.1810 yeah that's how they've done it in the USA for generations. But if you go back, WAAAY back, the first gins used rollers like this. It was how they first processed cotton in India. You can see an old gin from a museum collection demonstrated in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKurdWqVmbx4n80

Do you still have this gin? Cotton acres no longer sells these. I'd be interested in buying it from you if you no longer use it

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that Cotton Acres no longer sells these. I do still use mine, but if I ever decide to sell it I'll let you know.

I actually bought it from Cotton Acres, though it arrived broken and I had to fix it so I wouldn't recommend them.

Mine is just smashing seeds and winding the fibers around the metal roller. What am I doing wrong?
@experimentno.18105 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to know without seeing your gin, but it sounds like the seeds might be getting pulled between the rollers. I know mine does that if the rollers are a bit too far apart. I tighten mine until I get a bit of resistance when turning (but not so much that I can’t turn the handle). I hope that helps, but if not, let me know and I’ll try to think of other things that might cause it.

Might be using the wrong breed of cotton.

Are the top and bottom rollers connected by a set of gears on the left side or does the hand crank turn the top roller and flywheel just by friction?
@experimentno.18105 жыл бұрын
Hi! The hand crank actually turns the bottom (wooden) roller which turns the top (metal) roller by friction. The large wheel on the opposite side of the gin is attached to the metal roller though should I want to turn it by hand as well. Hope this helps!

Hi! I got the gin from Cotton Acres, though it arrived 6 months late and broken so do know that that is a possibility if you order from them.
