Do you still have this gin? Cotton acres no longer sells these. I'd be interested in buying it from you if you no longer use it

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that Cotton Acres no longer sells these. I do still use mine, but if I ever decide to sell it I'll let you know.

That is the sweetest Turkish style spindle I have ever seen, thanks for the video, I know cotton is difficult to spin because of the short fibres.

Is the the diameter of the cotton exactly the same or is it all close to the same ? If I used a micrometer how much variation would there be ?

I'm really struggling to spin cotton. My singles keep pulling apart, but when I up the twist, everything seems overspun (I get the little hard spirals). Also I can't get my drafting consistently very even. I'm really blown away by how much of a step backwards trying out cotton feels like. Do you have any tips (other than patience, which I'm working on)?
@experimentno.18103 жыл бұрын
Hmm, It's hard without knowing what type of tools you're using. If the singles are pulling apart then there's not enough twist in them. If you're using a wheel, have you adjusted the uptake? I find it really hard to spin cotton with either too much or too little uptake as it tries to pull the single either too fast (leading to not enough twist) or too slowly (leading to too much twist).

I don't believe I'll ever harvest or spin cotton, but now I know how processing to spinning works, so that's cool.

I'm so glad it was helpful! I got my wrist distaff from Maine Fiber Tools who is no longer in business, but there are a couple of makers on Etsy who have similar ones I think.

Fascinating! This is the first time I’ve seen how a cotton gin works. It seems so simple, but I can only imagine how it revolutionized cotton production. Thanks!
@experimentno.18103 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! This gin is actually different from the one that revolutionized cotton production. The gin that is used in most processing relies on blades that grab the cotton fiber where this one uses rollers and pressure. 😊

I found you again! I first saw this video months ago, before I had any cotton to card, and I remembered that you go through the steps in great detail. But I didn't save the link, and I just spent way too long watching a dozen other videos about carding cotton, and they're all too brief and sloppy, compared to your explanation and demonstration. Thanks!

cool to see these traditional tools. I wouldn't want to have to crank that all day!
@experimentno.18104 жыл бұрын
I think the original gins were a little different design with blades instead of rollers, but yes, it is exhausting to crank the gin for an extended period of time.
@mcRydes4 жыл бұрын
@@experimentno.1810 yeah that's how they've done it in the USA for generations. But if you go back, WAAAY back, the first gins used rollers like this. It was how they first processed cotton in India. You can see an old gin from a museum collection demonstrated in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKurdWqVmbx4n80

Mine is just smashing seeds and winding the fibers around the metal roller. What am I doing wrong?
@experimentno.18105 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to know without seeing your gin, but it sounds like the seeds might be getting pulled between the rollers. I know mine does that if the rollers are a bit too far apart. I tighten mine until I get a bit of resistance when turning (but not so much that I can’t turn the handle). I hope that helps, but if not, let me know and I’ll try to think of other things that might cause it.

Are the top and bottom rollers connected by a set of gears on the left side or does the hand crank turn the top roller and flywheel just by friction?
@experimentno.18105 жыл бұрын
Hi! The hand crank actually turns the bottom (wooden) roller which turns the top (metal) roller by friction. The large wheel on the opposite side of the gin is attached to the metal roller though should I want to turn it by hand as well. Hope this helps!
