I am the same! Coughton is unique in that every painting in the collection starts at the earliest one as you enter the building and ends with the family. 600 years of paintings in such fabulous condition. I didn't know the place existed until joining the National Trust! Thanks for your comments and I am so pleased you enjoyed the walk around.

Hello Callie This was a nice tour of Coughton Court,which rekindled memories of our visit back in 2017. When we were here in the spring we had a trip up to the roof and looked all around. Nice walk inside and out gorgeous grounds aswell. Have a good day Beth and Simon ❤️ 👍 🙋

Hi Beth and Simon, thanks for saying hello! The stairs to the roof were closed off when we visited, possibly due to it being 2 days off closing for the season. I bet the view was fantastic! I am hoping to go back in the Spring, so maybe the roof will be open again! Yayyy! Thanks again xx

Thank you for this lovely tour! I’m from West Virginia USA. My father’s ancestors came over in the early 1600s to Virginia. And thank you for showing and telling of their Catholic legacy. 🥰

Hello over the Pond, thank you so much for your kind words, it means everything to know that there's a connection for people. How fantastic to know your family came across as one of the earliest of settlers, did you find all this out online? I love family history. There's lots more I want to do on the Catholics in UK as there's more to tell. Most of the time we only see the "big" information about the reformation, but not much on the personal smaller families and how they suffered! Thank you once again, C xx

@@CalliesDiaries Callie, an older cousin of mine and my own research decades ago (before online) ;-) provided the information on my family. He was Captain Woodlief and they celebrated the first Thanksgiving on this side of the pond in Virginia, years before the pilgrims, but that’s part of history that isn’t in the history books. I would be interested to watch for your Catholic research too! The other side of the narrative. 😊

@@thecorbern4446 oh wow! That's fascinating! I think we tend to forget that many people left the British Isles because of the Catholic persecution, we only see the history of the Pilgrim fathers, who were puritans. When I was in school I lived near where the Pilgrim Fathers came from so we learned about it in History, I then went on to live near Plymouth, Devon where they left from and it's still very much part of the history in that area. My interest is definitely in the families and how it affected them. I can also see if from a non-religious point of view as I am not a practising "anything", although my past is Methodist to Church of England before my 20s. I have a lot of family in the US, most are Presbyterian or Methodist.
@thecorbern44462 жыл бұрын
@@CalliesDiaries my interest is the same. I don’t believe my immigrants were Catholic but may have been sympathetic since our Drury line seemed to remain Catholic post reformation (Woodlief married Drury). I’m Catholic from my mother’s side. 😀 I love history - especially the untold part. Keep up the good work!

@@thecorbern4446 I can understand their empathy, it must have been a scary time for everyone knowing if they didn't attend Anglican services they were fined or even worse; having so much conviction in their faith! Which part of the UK are your family from ?

Hi Patty, thank you for joining me! It's lovely to have you here. I have lots of family across The Pond, which is partly why I started this channel to share place in the UK that they may never get to see! It's raining here again today, we keep having to try and get to film these houses on dry days and before they close. Many of them shut down over winter until the spring as they are manned by volunteers! Thanks once again, see you on the next one and I hope you enjoyed all the other houses too! xx

@@CalliesDiaries Hello Callie, I think the balance you strike in your films is just right (for me, at least). I live in Oxford, 'though I was born and raised in South Wales. I look forward to catching up with your posts (country houses, dogs, and horses), and to watching your new content. Sir John de Throckmorton married Lady Eleanor de la Spine, countess of Coughton in 1409. They founded Coughton Court and are my 16th great grandparents. George is the great grandson of John and Eleanor, and it was he who remodeled Coughton Court in 1500’s.

This weekend , we visited this house and although the house was completely concealed by scaffolding we were really only able to visit two rooms of any significance , that was our lot ! everything else was either a storeage area or out of bounds . I am sorry but I just didnt "Get " the house at all . By that , I mean that my imagination just could not place me in the house when t was in its hey day . Not may places do , although Hartlebury Castle does , and so does the SS Great Britain at Bristol but sadly , far too many of these historical houses are without purpose today and do not educate as well as could do with the symathetic use of technology sensibly applied as in the SS Great Britains case . We wont be visiting again as there is nothing to see to fire any imagination of living at the house either virtual or real . I suggest the curators visit the Great Britain at Bristol or Hartlebury castle and see just what can be done .

That's so sad you had this experience. The house is owned by the National Trust, but the family still live in half of it and also it's closed for 6 months of the year when the family use all the house. It's only open for short periods. As you can see from my vlog when we visited we saw all the open spaces available. Sounds to me as if some large scale work is being done. Most houses close over the winter for curator work! I have never found a house not to educate anyone, because that is what the volunteers are there for in nearly every room to tell the stories of the houses. Having visited many over the years I have never found a house empty of volunteers whose enthusiasm for the house is wonderful. Even the gardeners have stopped to talk to me in the past about their work! It's such a shame Coughton is under scaffolding. Did you speak to anyone at the house about it or at the gate house on entry? Perhaps contact them and leave them feedback.
