COULD a Class 60 LOCO have an EMD ENGINE fitted....?

60014 has been moved from Toton TMD to Electromotive Longport for further evaluation - Is it a possibility that class 60 locos could be re-engineered with GM EMD engines like the class 56/69 project..?
Is a ying-ying sounding class 60 a real possibility..??
See the condition of 60014 onsite at Longport, with various other class 56 & 69 locos in differing conditions also. Ground based views of 60014 are currently limited due to it's position behind 66048 so aerial shots are also included.
Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments.
Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

It's very logical. It would sure be more reliable than the Mirrlees. And since whatever engine's installed doesn't have a bearing on tractive effort, which comes from the traction motors, it should be suitable for the heavy haulage jobs that the 60s are used for

Not sure about the any engine thing. Engines have different power and torque profiles. 2 stroke US diesels have less low speed torque compared to a slower revving big 4 stroke. This must make them different.

A hundred percent yes! An EMD 12-710 could be engineered into a class 60 i've been saying it for ages the class 60's at toton have no use so might aswell make them class 69/1's and change the electrical system considering how complicated the 60s are underneath and yet everybody says about my opinion that that wiring for that would be too complicated yet you could start wiring from scratch. Also great video by the way!

Idea works, just for emissions purposes they'd have to either do as they have done with the 56 rebuild and find a stack of redundant 10-710s that the 60 could use with Grandfather rights (assuming it's old enough to qualify), or use a different, newer and more emissions-compliant engine. EG a Caterpillar engine in a 60 would be very interesting!

Does any one remember when the first class 56 came to the UK from Romania, when they hit a certain speed they did the shack rattle and role as for the class 60 it's a shame there's so many sat rotten away when they could be put back to good use , converting them shouldn't be to hard to do, we have the technology to do it,

On the ‘Young Rail Professionals’ channel (2 years ago) there is an interview with Bob Tiller, GBRf’s engineering director. I'm fed up of the 'stick the Paxman back' comments about the 69s (Yingrids as I call them). We didn't get the 'stick the Sulzer back' comments with the Class 57s (Yingduffs); I don't think a 'Yingtug' would get the same reaction as they were always derided by UK railfans for replacing classic BR traction in the 80s-90s, same as with the 66s. Yet the 60s began to attract increased interest as they became the 'classic traction' in a sea of 66s... I passed through Longport on the way to / from the Battle of Nantwich in January but didn't notice EMD / Progress Rail.

I would use the Class 61 number as that was originally planned for the Class 66. The EMU units with 61xxx numbered coaches had largely been withdrawn by the time of the Class 66 introduction... British Rail had designs for a Class 61 / 62 that was a 75mph version of the Class 60; it was never introduced due to privatisation. If BR hadn't been privatised the Class 61 would have been used on the traffic where Freightliner uses its 75mph Class 66/6s.

Interesting. Nice to see more 69s progressing. I can see GBRf trying to refurbish class 60s, especially since they already own a number of them. I suspect if they intend to repower them, they will want to fit whatever the new class 99s will have fitted. (I read something about it being a Cummins, but the numbers didn't match up. My guess is a Caterpillar power unit.) Progress Rail, being owned by Caterpillar offer both EMD and Caterpillar power units. Would this be the start of the Class 63 project? I think this is a great idea and I hope it works out. Although it would likely sound more like an EMD SD70ACe than a Class 66 especially if they use AC traction motors and the possible addition of dynamic braking too. Personally had the Class 60's had the CPU from GE. They would have been more reliable from their days of BR. Exciting times ahead and if this all goes well. Maybe more could be converted.
