By far, the strongest supporting evidence of the "Black Thought is the GOAT" claim is his legendary Funk Flex Hot 97 freestyle. Almost uncontestedly the greatest radio freestyle of all time, it is dense, literary, allusion-heavy, and flawlessly, thrillingly delivered. To truly understand why people clamour in support of Black Thought and his excellence, drop everything and watch that on KZbin, if you haven't already. His mastery of the rap fundamentals, which he demonstrates over those 10 minutes, cannot be overstated. Seriously

Saw The Roots at a jazz fest for free this summer, and Black Thought is the best MC that I've seen rock the stage, his concert ability is even wider than his recorded verses had led me to believe. He's a monster in every facet. Loaded Lux's freestyle is something to behold as well.
@behtashbahador6588
@behtashbahador6588 2 жыл бұрын
Agree the freestyle solidified the argument, but don't think one can say it's "by far" the strongest evidence. It absolutely is an encapsulation of many of the myriad of GOAT criteria BT is either at the top or in the argument of top ex. live performance, breathe control, cadence, vocal quality, social commentary, references, metaphors, composition, braggadocio, etc. But these are centered on the rapping itself, whereas other career-centered criteria like longevity, popularity, record sales, peer endorsements, collaborations w/ other elites, etc. are crucial to the GOAT claim. For example, wouldn't say locksmith and mysone are GOATs based on the strength of their FUNK freestyles even though those are also incredible on many of the same criteria as BTs). The freestyle is the greatest documented 10mins of rap ever; it is definitely a cornerstone but there are many other cornerstones and many other important rocks in the wall of BTs status as GOAT

DOOM is a rabbit hole that could be fun diving down at a slow pace, just because there's so much. He's a big piece of underground hip hop history and almost all of his albums are growers. That being said: I'll say what most DOOM fans say. Listen to Madvillainy. It flows easily and never gets old. As for posse cuts: I'm not hugely informed either but I like Scenario from Low End Theory and Really Doe by Danny Brown, Kendrick, Earl Sweatshirt, and Ab-Soul
@cactusesforyou2202

That Danny brown album was awesome. Really doe was a fantastic posse cut for that album. Each verse felt like a new spicy ingredient to the soup. But the posse cut from cheat codes brings a whole other element to the table. The beat itself sounds so formidable. It’s like the only way the rappers kept up with it was through their combined efforts. Real edge of your seat shit.

The first 4 minutes of this video is the biggest roller coaster of emotion I've ever had on a Prof Skye video. 0:00 - 0:50 Prof Skye defending what is denigrated as 'low-class' Hip Hop is why I love this channel. Shout outs to Megan Thee Stallion! 1:15 Don't worry, the title isn't provocative. I thought it was from the preview in the side bar, but then I clicked, because I know you'd never lie to or mislead me and the full title had Black Thought in it. "Perfect Rap" and "Black Thought" go together like Harry and Ron, like Ash and Pikachu, like Fantano and Hating on Nav. It's just meant to be 1:33 "-my long history of being insanely disappointed with Black Thought" ... You've never seen a human being's face transform from happy to "....What did you just say?" as quickly as mine did. I really thought about unsubscribing for a microsecond. But he saved it with the explanation.

DOOM and Danger Mouse have an entire Adult Swim album which is why those references you spoke about are on that song. It's not (just) because he's "getting high". Danger Mouse and DOOM have worked together before on an album called The Mouse and the Mask. This was made in collaboration with Adult Swim, with many lyrics referencing popular shows, hence the references on the DOOM verse here. P.S. Rahzel has a pretty wild career himself. He was involved with Ultramagnetic MCs in their early days, became a member of the Roots for a few years (although mostly just for live shows), and eventually found himself on a Björk album! Funny how those dominoes fall. (Thanks for reading these way too long paragraphs!)

this was my first experience with Black Thought and it couldn't have gone better. From first listen it's clear that he's a rapper that's refined his craft to a point of faultlessness, making it easy to look past the technicality and just get lost in how amazing it sounds. RZA was the unifying creative force behind the Wu-Tang. There were discussions where RZA put together songs that the members did not know they were on. They ended up hearing them for the first time after they were complete. RZA’s disciples never really rose to the challenge, RZA focused on movies, and a general lack of discipline due to times not being as hard led to them not producing anything great in a while.

14:35 I don't think it's so much that we're letting rappers age and moreso that Hip Hop is now a 50 year old genre, so of course it would become more open to having older artists excel. It's just my hypothesis that young art forms will force older artists out and prefer the young, but the older it gets the more accepting it becomes of age. I'm open to being disproven, but I'm excited to hear other people's perspective on it.

Awesome thumbnail. Awesome video. Cool to hear you talking about the roots and stuff. Phrenology has some super interesting tracks, by the way. Anyway thanks. This got me through the last 40 minutes of work today, pulling weeds.

You should really do yourself a favor and check out Madvilliany at least to get the DOOM importance, not only because it's a great album, but it will put DOOM's impact on hip-hop as a whole into perspective for you.

Wait, Jimmy Fallon is "smart?" I've heard a lot of adjectives hurled toward him, "smart" isn't one of them. Doesn't he play games with celebrities after fumbling through his monologue? I Highly recommend Danger Mouse & Jemini The Gifted One's criminally slept on "Ghetto Pop Life". I think the production on "Cheat Codes" is phenomenal, but DM leaves Black Thought a bit in the background. The vocals are fuzzed out, echoed and a bit murky, like a scuff on a poorly pressed record. Lost in the woodwork. On "The Darkest Park" Tarik sounds like he is rapping from a flooded basement. Compared to DM's work with Jemini, or The Gorillaz, or Gnarls Barkley, or The Shins, or Beck, or The Black Keys, it feels unfinished. Maybe that was the point. I've only listened to the album four or five times, but I am surprised to say I think this album could actually use some tweaks behind the boards. When you said "compressed" I think you were right on the money. Could be due to the nature Thought was recording his vocals--hotels, multiple studios, etc. I suppose we'll never know. I mean, is Thought spitting fire in a wet paper bag on "No Gold Teeth"? In the end it's a minor complaint to an otherwise amazing project. "Because" is worth the price of admission. Keep em' coming Prof. EDIT: There are so many great posse tracks! One of the best posse cuts of all time is "The Last Huzzah (Remix)" Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P. But umm... "Scenario" by Tribe, "Live at the BBQ" by Main Source, or "C.I.A. (Criminals In Action)" by KRS-One, Zack de la Rocha and The Last Emperor, or even "Oldie" by Odd Future.

You’re the first person I’ve seen mention this! I agree %100. The mixing leaves Thought in a similar space as The Roots albums. He sounds like another accessory to the track as opposed to the front and center
