An agreement between Ethiopia and a breakaway part of Somalia is raising tension on the Horn of Africa. Somalia regards Somaliland as part of its territory - and has warned Ethiopia against interfering in its affairs. But Ethiopia is landlocked and wants access to the sea - something Somaliland can provide.
Regional blocs are trying to mediate, but neither side is willing to back down.
So how will this dispute play out?
And is war a possibility?

Mr Aynte merits commendation for articulating a clear and concise argument that manifested intelligence and composure. He displayed respect and professionalism while engaging with the complex and sensitive issues at hand. Conversely, Mr Bryden seemed to belittle the intricacy of the situation, as one would anticipate from someone with covert motives. He was contemptuous and disregarded the valid points raised by Mr Aynte. This is a flagrant breach of international law, as the agreement lacks the approval of the country whose territories are being leased. I implore both my people from Somaliland and Somalia to overcome their emotions and collaborate to resolve this issue, but I am skeptical if that will be attainable, because we have a group of politicians from both sides who have vested interests in the fragmentation of our people. I hope this situation can be settled peacefully and harmoniously for all parties involved.

Consideration of equitable taxation is a must! In the spirit of diplomatic collaboration, it is imperative for Egypt and Somalia to engage in a constructive dialogue concerning the utilization of the Blue Nile and Shebelle-Juba Rivers, vital resources originating from Ethiopia. Mutual cooperation and a fair quid pro quo arrangement are essential to ensure the sustainable use of these shared waters. Consideration of equitable taxation may provide a foundation for a diplomatic resolution, fostering regional harmony and shared prosperity. Tip

Tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, especially in the context of the Red Sea region, could potentially lead to conflicts. Factors such as historical disputes, regional politics, and resource competition may contribute to heightened tensions. However, the complex nature of international relations makes it challenging to definitively predict the likelihood of war.

Amidst the throes of internal discord, it seems a rather unpalatable prospect that these two nations should deign to engage in the perilous dance of international conflict. One would be inclined to posit that the energies of these beleaguered lands might be better employed in seeking a resolution to their domestic tribulations, as opposed to fanning the flames of war and adding further fuel to the tumultuous fires that already rage within their borders.

As a fellow Ethiopian though, let me educate you so you won't ashamed us in a global platform like this in the future. Here is what war vs conflict is all about: 1. Conflict: This is a broader term encompassing any disagreement or opposition between two or more parties, where at least one perceives the other as a threat, and can include from two individuals to armed conflict within (civil war) and outside of a state. 2. War: is an organized conflict involving armed conflict typically between states or nations, but can also occur within a state (civil war). It involves significantly higher levels of violence, often with organized armies, strategic campaigns, and widespread bloodshed. Now based on that the war in Amhara is a conflict between two armed groups, one being led by the State armed force (called EDF) and the other with the Amhara Popular Force (called FANO). It involves large scale weaponry including air attacks using Drones.

@@Freddy-ih4xo What is wrong being Amhara?! I wish I were one. They are the most decent people that I know who are being persecuted and massacred by people intoxicated by Ethiopian ethnic based divisive politics that is all based on hate against Amhara people. I like their culture, use their language Amharic (without it no people group can communicate in Ethiopia) and their political, cultural and economical contribution is emense for Ethiopia. They are the most peaceful people I have ever known and live among us for many many years. But they are also conscious of the need for librity and freedom. If their forefathers didn't stand against outside forces for centuries, you and I today would either be Arabs, Italian speaking small tribes with diluted culture and identity. Unfortunately, thier contribution and desire for unity is not liked by "extremist" ethno nationalist politicians who want to use ethnic politics to gain political power without necessarily benefiting their ethnic group. They use that politics for subjugation, divide and rule. As we all know, unless we luck fear of God, Amhara's human and democratic rights have been severely violated exceptionally in all government systems, particularly intensified during TPLF rule of Ethiopia and that has reached now to its optimal level by the Oromo led rule of Ethiopia. I have heard in my own ears and government officials from Oromia declaring war and seen ethnically cleansing them from the place where they have lived well before ethnic federation was introduced in Ethiopia. This us a well known fact locally and internationally. Today, the Amharas have organized themselves and are fighting what they call it a matter of existential war. According to thier source, they have trained around 5 million youth. But other official sources put that number between 4 to 4.5 million. The Ethiopian government plan to relinquish the war and control the region in "short" has not been successful. In the contrary, the region is not fully under the control of the government and the systems have already been collapsed.

Somaliland trying to destroy themselves in order to get back on Somalia. Most of their citizens were even saying, they don’t agree with this deal and could backfire on us in the future but I’m for whatever that boils the blood of those in souther Somalia. That’s how bad the situation is. Somalia’s government is sleeping. The people are too. The crazy thing is, all of Somalia’s problems could go away if they dropped tribalism. They could actually be global power with complete control of the Red Sea. Also saying Ethiopia spends more money on their military therefore stronger doesn’t make sense when global powers like Turkey, Arab league and Egypt are already siding with Somalia. Also it’s funny how none of them mentioned that majority people in Somaliland don’t want this deal and in fact big cities in Somaliland still claim to be part of Somalia. Somaliland is not break away. It’s the older sister of Somalia that had its worldwide recognition on 26th June 1960. Hence, Somalia was automatically attached to the recognised Somaliland. That unity soon began with inequality marginalised Somaliland regions. We united with a different culture, a weak and incompetent administration system that was not yet recognised prior to early assessment failure. However, Somaliland British educated people were honest to build strong institutions for Somalia in the first two decades as they were the ones that were ahead in expertise at the time. On the other hand, all we benefitted was deprivation to develop and that falling back a century-like and genocide in our people. They are unfortunately in the fourth decade of turmoil and have not yet gotten the mind for peace but rather are negatively glued to Somaliland.

When you really examine this issue, it becomes unclear why Ethiopia will take such an aggressive route to sea access and better trading conditions when the African Continental Free Trade Area is being created. This area will already aide in boosting Ethiopia's trading potential and that of all African countries, hopefully including Somalia. Somalia signed the agreement but has not ratified it yet, while Ethiopia is a ratifying party. The Ethiopian officials should know that there is a peaceful, law-abiding solution to their problem. If they were truly ambitious, they would try to reunite with Eritrea or at least enjoy the benefits of the new trading area in Africa. This gun-ho, criminal approach is not the way to get the country out of their landlocked fix.

I do believe the Ethiopian PM is not a good man but any country would do what Ethiopia did to get their country out of such dilemma. Ethiopia being land locked has had devastating consequences on her economy, like the inflation to overcome this crisis Ethiopia needs to increase her export something she would succeed at if she had a port.

I agree the aggressive approach is not the way, but somewhere somehow Sacrifices have to be made for the greater good of Africans on this continent , and I wish we Africans could agree on that. Everything is connected. There is a reason why Egypt and Ethiopia were accepted into BRICS. There is a reason why South Africa is fighting for the independence of Palestine. Israel aims to occupy and conquer all of Palestine and with time enter Africa through the Red Sea, and start having influence and taking over our continent too. Think in 50 year time frames. If Ethiopia has the port, it will be second port outside of South Africa’s on the continent that can be used to trade with the BRICS countries. Trade with these countries will accelerate our continents growth much more rapidly than if we just trade amongst ourselves. The honest truth is we need a multilateral world and we need allies/partners that will guide us on how to run efficient governments, we simply don’t know how to, it’s just not our thing. And We cannot allow white people to enter the continent. Plans such as the cape to Cairo railway are essential for trade relations between African countries and growth of African countries. Growth of the continent for us Africans by Africans must be the priority!

Aynte . . . True but no economic growth should be slowed when it has such potentials. If we're growing 6% annually on average we want to make that 20% and we need more ports to speed up the trajectory. Not having access to the sea is very limiting. Ethiopia is still developing aiming to become a middle income country by 2030. As any other nation aspiring to be in the list of the most developed, Ethiopia must aim higher. Should not be limited to just 2 ports but must increase that number. Right now the only access is Djibouti and the rent is also growing exponentially($2bn/yr) so Ethiopia also must look for other options. reduce the burden of paying higher amount of money demanded by the government in Djibouti and look for others offering less for the dollar.

Somaliland have there own police, army, parliament, currency etc... so Ethiopia technically didn't create this division. The only way this MOU with somaliland would be illegal is if Ethiopia reiceves a port without recognizing somaliland as a country first. Then at that point somalia has every right to defend her sovereignty. But if Ethiopia gives recognition first then reiceves the port then at that point everything is finished. Because once a sovereign country gives recognition to an entity then that entity automatically becomes legal as stated in the UN charter 14:3. But I don't support Ethiopia decision at all.

That was the result of political sabotage undertaken by rebels ; TPLF and Eritrean Separatists in Ethiopia and Eritrea respectively. Ethiopia with bigger Economy in the region and the second populous country in Africa can’t be denied its natural rights of accessing its fair share from the Red Sea.
