Finland does not need to outgun Russia, we outsmart them, we out-excel them in motivation and in our systematic approach to logistics and tactics, taking pride in being disciplined in executing operations with high accuracy. Finland is a land of engineers, Nokia and Linux came from Finland. We are friendly and overly polite, even seeming docile, to a point, to avoid unnecessary and harmful conflict with crazy people. However if threatened, we don't take shti from anyone, and do what needs to be done. The Russian army looks to be currently a disordered band of looters and mercenaries with low motivation and numbers-based tactics, literally mercilessly pushing convoy after convoy of their poor men and tanks as cannon fodder forward to take bits of ground. I don't think the current leadership model in Russia, with the pervading property of corruption inherent, can produce a better-organized army, neither better-equipped, with all the sanctions now. Perhaps that is better for us.

Finland is an extremely hard land to attack, given our geography. For example, if any of the fighting takes place during the winter period, one small mistake will cost your life through freezing to death. I found out that myself during my Finnish army basic training period, when I froze solid to the ground while sleeping in a unit tent during an exercise, with one lung filling with fluids as a result. And that was with a lifetime of living in these conditions already.

I still think he doesn't understand Russia though. Even Finns, who share a border and centuries of trade with Russia, don't grasp the Russian culture and mindset unless they go live there. Most Russians barely know where Finland is, and practically none of them have heard about the Winter War. The very few Russians who happen to study military history between the 2 nations only learn that the fascist Finns invaded Russia. I saw this personally on their map in The Central Red Army Museum in Moscow. They show a huge blue arrow coming from Finland towards Saint Petersburg during the "Great Patriotic War against Fascism". There is zero discussion about Stalin attacking and invading Finland in 1939. Russia is portrayed as the victim, who constantly needs to be on their guard against everyone along their borders. They are culturally isolated from reality of the past, and are now being told that as their valiant boys are fighting the Nazis in Ukraine, those crazy Finns are activating militarily against them up in their Northwest flank with NATO, to encircle poor Russia. They don't see anything remotely how we do in the West. Finns are largely ignorant of how drastic the difference is in how information is portrayed. Putin will not be portrayed as an adventurist dictator, but a type of savior who protects them from Ukronazis and fascist Finns joining NATO. They literally are still in a 1940s peasant mentality.

@@hasse102 That’s strange because I have lived in Russia and Finland, as my mom is from Finland. I was going to qualify my statement with “You have to get away from academic or diplomatic circles in Moscow to see the real countryside and other cities in Russia.” I see the same problem with US and other Western diplomats. They spend most of their time in touristy areas and don’t see the real Russia, then form their opinion on that set of experiences. He also doesn’t want to come across as being remotely sympathetic to Russia, especially now. One thing I noticed about the Russians is that they have a very unified, infantile, peasant mindset where they see themselves both as victims and victors, low self image and extreme pride, a contrast of schizoid personality types when it comes to international relations.

After a battle or attack, the Ukrainian military reflects on its combat operations and works to learn from these moments so that they become more and more effective with each battle. In addition, they've spent years learning from Western military advisors, and now the Ukrainian military is also receiving tons of modern Western military vehicles and equipment. This is a winning strategy, that will see the Ukrainian military become stronger and stronger as time goes on, despite whatever losses and damage the Russian military inflicts. What does Russia do after a battle? They deny anything bad happened and say that everything is going to plan. Then they "exercise" in front of a camera to show to the world. They practice every day for marching in Red Square and argue over which of one of their coolest, newest, high-tech prototype weapons they'll threaten the world with. What did they learn? Nobody knows. Are they gonna be better prepared for the next battle? Doubtful. What did they accomplish? They really showed all those Western teens with a Soviet flag on their wall how badass the Russian military *appears* to be. It's gonna be a rude awakening when in the future, many Russians realize that they killed Ukrainians for nothing and that thousands of dead Russian fathers, brothers, sons and cousins only managed to accelerate the decline of Russia's population and economy.

It would be wonderful if the journalists covering the story would consider the complicated history of Finland and Russia. It must be very difficult for Finland, given that it was a Duchy within Russia until the Revolution, that it was invaded by Russia during the 2nd World War, that it had to consider its position as an immediate neighbour of the USSR. As a student of history, I find it annoying that journalists appear to treat a development like this as if it occurred in a vacuum.
@esmenhamaire6398

Also, how the Finns were treated within that Duchy relied entirely on the whims of the current Tsar. Some were laissez-faire, but others actively tried to Russify Finland, banning the Finnish language, etc. Unsurprisingly, this didn't sit well with the Finns.

You are right. However I doubt it's due to lack of knowledge - rather the span of time and the perceived lack of attention span from the viewers to take things so far back. The development has been gradual, of course, as someone who chose civil service instead of conscription in the late 1990s I made my choice according to the information available to me at the time. Now having been forced into a situation where another choice has to be made separate from the one I made 25 years ago, with the empiric evidence I have now, I agree with NATO. That's for just 5,5 million people. And that's not even all: 900k plus received some military training ... It is as if the US had an active force of 1.3 million soldiers but could activate enough reserves in days to grow to 16.7 million soldiers. And 53 million received at least some military training. Then: the specifically trained to "hunt" Russians in the vast forests of the north with anti-platform weapons and snipers. I think attacking Finland is the dumbest thing Russia could do. Much much love, best regards..... and the very best wishes to the country and people of Finland. As for the opposition of the leader Turkey to Finland joining NATO, the practical effect (s) of any such opposition IS moot....as Finland now has the ability to establish bilateral military relations with practically each and every other member of NATO....in the very same manner that it has already done with England, and even accomplish same in less time than it would take NATO to come to a final decision on its application for membership. As to a potential attack or invasion by Russian forces, at this time, it would not only fail, the fact is that its military would be reduced to such an extent that it would no longer be a threat to any other nation, large or small. And, finally, as to Putin's repeated threats regarding the use of Nuclear weapons, the actual use of any such weapons would give his opponents the right to make Moscow and most of Russia unlivable for a very very very long time. And on a more personal level, my response to Vladimir Putin would be the same as that of my Ukrainian friends on Snake Island, ie;. ......F... You.! Once again, to my brothers and sisters from Finland I say...much love, best regards and best wishes from yours truly. Tony St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Swedes if they joined would add the best navy in the Baltic, the Baltic would become a NATO lake, and, prevent any Russian naval force from being effective. I wonder if not would be time for Finland to occupy the Scandinavian peninsula. I think they would be able to do it, and snap Kola and Karjala out of Russian hands. That would make Russia actually louse what it cares about: territory, and it would be a very valuable lesson to learn for Russia: aggression is risky, you can lose territory, so, maybe, do not do that in the future. thousand years of constant, non stop, aggression, is what defines Russia, without much loss (other then manpower, but, Russia does not care about such things, it never has). Here is a unique opportunity to reverse that, which could be historic, and for the first time in thousand years snap away what Russian dictator/czar cares about.

@@gregharwho62 What I have heard and read, is that about 0,6 of the population wants to join NATO. NATO, per definition, is a defensive alliance, so far, so good. However, even if you do not know everything about NATO, one simple rule should be mandatory knowledge in Europe: attack on one, is an attack on all. That, per definition, means, that any NATO-country that gets attacked, drags every other country into war. If Finnish people do only, and under no other theoretical thinkable circumstance ever in the lifespan of the Universe (which is what you are suggesting) wants to come to any other nations defense what so ever ("Only reason we have an army is to defend ourselves", that is what you write, so, it is your statement, not mine), then there are two possibilities. Either, you are wrong, or, 0,6 percent, which is the majority, of the Finnish population, has no Idea what NATO is about, and are therefore porly informed, only act with emotions and are unable to draw logical conclusions. Its definitely not better funded than the Uk military! No idea where you got that from. Finland defence budget €5.8 billion (2022) UK Defense , defense budget £42.4 billion 2020/21 Really nowhere near each other. Also the "larger army" is a red herring. In terms of active personnel i.e professionals. Finland 23,000 UK 194,000 Finland has a larger reserve force at almost a million, but these are not working professionals, and the UK with its larger population could quickly ramp up, train it's forces if required. Uk tends to rank in the top 10 out of roughly 140nations on conventional forces alone. Finland doesn't even make the top 50 in similar rankings. And that's before you take into account nuclear weapons, which the UK has but the Fins do not. I know that the narrative is Russia is useless , Finland are better trained and could repell them, but I really doubt they could. The UK couldn't prevent Russian forces doing massive damage to the UK either. Russia has an incredible number of missiles. Lets just be serious realistic and not get excited and emotional. Number matter. Russia has take huge amounts of territory in the Ukraine and almost landlocked the country, it owns most of the coast now. Sure thier capibilties are poor in some contexts but their overwhelming numbers mean that they have bitten off the most important parts of Ukraine and will never give them back, all of Ukraine oil and gas belongs to Putin, and also Russia will own all of the coastline also, so all food exports will be controlled by Russia. People don't seem to get it. Russia is winning and has massive massive numbers of personal and weapons.

In principle I'd agree but in Finland the consensus is beyond crystal clear. According to the latest polls at least 76% support NATO membership and of the remaining about half are undecided which means that if it came to a vote the numbers would be even higher for joining. In Finland according to the latest polls about 70% are against a referendum and think the parliament should decide on it. I can't talk for Sweden because I don't really know their numbers but a referendum would be completely pointless in Finland because unless if there is a truly insanely, impossibly vast change in opinion a referendum would be pointless and just give Russia a chance for hybrid attacks.
