This is fascinating! I love hearing from the authors/scientists who did the research. I learned something new...didn't know there are viruses that attack bacteria in the gut. Wow. I knew things were complex but WOW! 🤯 I can't wait to see what else is discovered! Thank you Nick.

The brazen confidence of conventional pharma based medicine in the face of the unimaginable complexity of metabolism and disease processes is just amazing! You are doing great service in spreading this learning.

Great video Nick! Thanks. I was just listening to a conversation with Dr. Emily Leeming. She mentioned that "conversation" taking place between the gut and brain is really quite skewed. Apparently the gut does most of the talking and the brain does most of the listening, somwhere in the range of like a 90/10 split. So this research is kind of a big deal.

WOW!!! This is amazing!!! I can see the implications of this potentially going beyond just food addiction and getting into mental health, namely an effective treatment for depression.

Been a member of a 12 step group for food addiction for 20 yrs. I have a list of foods that trigger overeating, that I cannot eat in moderation. We need to eat but we don't need to eat the foods that trigger addiction.

I am an adoptee and have learned I am not alone with my addition tendencies. I dealt with addition to cigarettes and food. Addition centers have a high percentage of adoptees they treat. Perhaps since we were never allowed to nurse this is how this virus got in our guts causing the additions.

Food addiction can only be discussed in a context of sugar addiction. Remove all food items which could be considered as sugars in its different forms and food assumes a proper niche in the human hierarchy of needs. “Needs” is a key word.

Everything you listed from the DSM describes my love of all food. I self-described as a food addict over 40 years ago. But still one must eat. What else turned up 40 years ago? The Food Pyramid. Insert curse words of choice. My only strategy was to tell myself, “my gut is a liar.” Hungry all the time. No satiety. And no food allergies. Learning about nutrition and becoming just a little militant toward myself digestively speaking has been my salvation.

Have you tried the Carnivore diet? It's hard to overeat on Carnivore.
@mariehughey539056 минут бұрын
@ I’m basically ketovore and eating properly. The backlash from friends who say stupid/caring stuff like “people around the world eat fruits/vegetables” or “you need your whole grains” is endless. Hence my militant stance. I have committed to eating mostly fatty meat and occasionally high fiber/low glycemic vegetables. I’ve decided to be quiet about unless someone asks. I made the mistake of sharing what I’ve learned.

I am far from an expert on this, and am still fighting this battle, but _from my own -and still relatively naive understanding-_ the biggest _food_ factors are to increase consumption of fermented foods*, fiber, and protein. *From my own n=1 experience, most fermented foods have clearly been helpful, however kombucha completely and absolutely messed up my gut biome! As alluded to by Nick, there are also fecal transplants, but I don't have personal experience with these, nor do I think they're likely to be a go-to solution, hence the focus on food factors.

Think my comment was deleted, why I have no idea. Dr Robert Kiltz is about to go live with a young guy that had his large intestine removed and is now on a carnivore diet. I personally cured my horrible gut on the same diet, fortunately before removal.

Wonderful video, and I love having the scientist guest spot. I struggled to relate the comment by tDr. Trueta that the virus are very specific to the individual with the experimental element you mentioned where they moved them from humans to mice? Also, were there any indications of person-to-person or mice-to-mice transmittal?
@KellyRyan-r2lСағат бұрын
This is exciting news. As a carb addict, I would love to have a treatment to overcome this addiction. Since the dopamine and seratonin neurotransmitters are deeply involved in mood and other addictions, do you see other implications for this research?

I don't know if you remember this but a few months ago i mentioned that I didn't think I was ever addicted to sugar, alcohol or nicotine despite using them fairly heavily at one time or another. Could this be because I don't have these viruses in my gut?

According to Wikipedia 'Anthranilic acid was once thought to be a vitamin and was referred to as vitamin L1 in that context, but it is now known to be non-essential in human nutrition.' 🤔 Maybe not so non-essential after all. Wikipedia has a footnote on that sentence, if anyone wants to find out more. I scored moderately food addicted on the Yale Food Addiction Quiz. I feel like it's really somewhere between mild and moderate, due to the questions all being based on 12 months. I am sometimes able to control myself for a couple months at a time before going off the rails again.

@KZ-pt5qk43 минут бұрын
This is great information but my question is what exactly is a virus? No one really has a concrete definition of it or physical laboratory proof of viruses… they just have computer generated images of what they think they are… now bacteria is real… we definitely have proof of bacteria… so maybe this concept of viruses is misleading? I’m assuming that when the body has a detox reaction to something that we are actually confusing it with virus… all doctors will tell you that antibiotics won’t do anything to help viral infections and you must wait it out… I have six young kids who get colds and such, however my taking care of them in such close proximity doesn’t transfer any kind of sickness to myself… honestly the only time I ever get sick is if I change my diet in an unhealthy way… too much sugar or carbohydrates. From a nutritional perspective it makes sense that someone would get sick when they are eating things that are “toxic” to the body… and that goes for all produce and grains too because of how they are grown and processed with chemicals, at least here in the US… even organic is at risk for this. So what actually is a virus? Is it just what we call a natural reaction in the body to something it’s trying to fix? This is definitely a complex question but I would love more information and research about this topic.
