My 92 year old, earth, now Celestial mother passed away two weeks ago coming Monday. She taught me by example not to gossip or over share. That is one of many reasons why neighbors, friends and relations have been coming out of the woodwork to share how much they loved her. She stayed out of the drama and never joined any tribe. A singular precious lady ascended on the 19th of February, 2024. RIP it up Mom.

From watching the movie Doubt I learned the definition of Gossip; Gossip is like cutting a pillow open and spreading the feathers into the wind and expecting to be able to retrieve every feather back, which is impossible. The damage is done! That's why defamation of character lawsuits exist.

Information is power! My resident 411 is a fire starter who sometimes can't keep up with what she told to whom causing chaos all over the place. Yes my resident gossip is messy!!! It's true she does use gossip as currency but she is one of the most miserable people on the planet. I discourage her gossip because she is always in conflict with someone which is why she's so miserable.

At a societal level, gossip is important because it is a huge factor in what makes a group of people a society as oppose to just a group of people. But what Whoopi is getting at, that the others seem to understand, is that gossip can go from non-harmful news about someone's life ("Joe's in a new relationship. Jane and Tom just had a baby. Bob just got a new job. Jennifer just dumped her boyfriend." etc.) to unkind and possibly untrue assumptions that could seriously harm someone's reputation ("Joe's in a new relationship because he couldn't make it work with his last girlfriend. We'll see how long this lasts." "Jane and Tom just had a baby. That baby doesn't look very much like Tom..." "Bob got a new job. With that temper of his, I bet he got fired from the last one." "Jennifer just dumped her boyfriend, but I saw her flirting with a different guy last week...") It could just be that a group of friends are talking about the latest development in another friend's life. They haven't talked to the friend, so they don't know exactly why something happened, so they start throwing around theories. The theories get thrown around enough that people start to take them as fact. A good example I can think of that isn't particularly harmful to anyone is that one summer, my very musical brother, who was in an orchestra, was asked by the local symphony to cue the cannons for Tchiakovsky's 1812 Overture in the park for the Independence Day celebrations. Again, he was in a local professional chamber orchestra, but not the symphony. Well, look how long it took for me to explain all that. When someone is spewing out the gossip of week really quickly at lunch or church or whatever, some key details can get lost. The FACT that my brother was cuing cannons for the symphony got morphed in the grapevine that my brother was in the symphony, and it was mildly embarrassing to my family to have to explain that my brother was merely cuing cannons, not joining the symphony. So we're never going to be able to completely get rid of gossiping. It's too important for social interaction. Honestly, this entire show is a form of gossip. But we just need to be very cognizant of what we're spreading around. What are actually the facts. What are the theories. What got possibly blown out of proportion, etc. And finally, when it comes to the facts, what will cause serious harm if they are spread around? If you find out one person in your friend group is cheating on their spouse, yes, I think you should definitely tell the person who is being cheated on, but I don't think you should spread that around the group because that's just spreading the pain. And if there are kids involved, can you imagine if you found out that one of your parents cheated on the other because someone at school heard it from a gossiping mom? Just be careful with what you spread around.
