I joined the USN in 1986 and the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier. It was just commissioned and my first real cruise was Shock Trials. There are 4 detonations, each one closer to simulate how the ship reacts to a near miss. They detonated 40,000 lbs of HBX and brother, let me tell you what Hell sounds like. When they did the first one and knew it was the furthest I was thinking holy SHIT we're not gonna survive the last one! I am an 18 year old punk kid thinking I was all that and when faced with the power of underwater shock waves, you get a real life lesson on what power really is. Water transfers energy so much more efficiently than air. That hydrostatic wave that hit the ship lifted me off my feet. The last and closest detonation really tore up the ship. Lots of pipes that were not welded properly came apart. I remember going into a berthing compartment and seeing bare metal bulkheads because the steam pipe let go and blistered the paint off the steel. But that's why they did it. Better to discover those problems early and not in real battle. We went straight back to Newport News where she was built and stayed over a month repairing the "deficiency list" as they called it.

My mind is being rocked by the idea of how many U.S. Marines, Japanese Army, and Naval members from both sides would have been spared had the Japanese naval carriers been taken down in one fell swoop like this. Ironically it probably would have made things worse for Europe. The United States could have said, "We have the wherewithal to defend our oceans, so we don't need to directly get involved" and England likely would have been caught in a brutal stalemate for more years than before having to wrestle the logistics of its Army and Navy coming in from all corners of the world to defend the island. Ironically, since Australia would have less need to concentrate their forces in Southeast Asia, it probably would have been the Aussies coming in clutch for the British if such a scenario took place.

To give the Brits credit, they probably could have taken Germany and bent them over pretty badly on their own. The Empire's industrial base was just that much more than Germany's.
@imapopo2924

@@taemien9219 Yes, but it would have taken years and have been _extremely_ costly in both men and materials. Britain was already in dire economic straits after WW2 with US help. Without it, Britain would be even worse off in pretty much every way. The Allies would no doubt still win the war, but at much greater cost.

Has anyone sketched out a bolt on booster rocket for standard bomb cases? I'm thinking something where you lob toss the bomb and a rocket kicks for a few seconds in on the way up to give it more standoff. If it could be combined with existing precision terminal guidance packages the even a cheap dumb booster might be worth something.

@@missingdogmusic A quick look at the AASM wiki pages makes it look close, definitely very close to the same idea. But at a first glance, it's at least 10x the price point I'm thinking about. For one thing, it mentions that the guidance package is part of the kit; why not plan on using any guidance package already in deployment? For another, it sounds like the rocket is way more complex than the sheet metal tail sections used on dumb bombs. I'm thinking of something more like a Q class solid rocket, which _amateurs_ occasionally build, one at a time, for something like $3000 and could give a 1 ton payload a 3G kick for 3-6 seconds. An existing Paveway II nose section plus $5k in rocket and sheet metal for the tail and you are still around 10x cheaper.

Of course, GPS targeting wouldn't be necessary as the US spy satellite network would've caught the fleet before formation. Communications monitoring and pattern maneuvers would've given them away long before they could even make a move. Assuming that our F15E is in 1941 and our satellites don't exist, to be fair, you should redo this model without satellite GPS assist if possible.

uhhhh...that method doesn't actually work all that great on larger ships? like, to the point where we've tried it with _nukes_ and it didn't work reliably? even if you're using a large enough charge to actually succeed in breaking the keel damage compartmentalization is a HELL of a thing for keeping ships afloat, it'll cripple their ability to function but even literally cutting the ship in half wouldn't "sink it within a matter of seconds". it's certainly economically viable though: broken keel on a ship means it is almost certainly going to be cheaper to build an entirely new one than to even attempt to repair it, it probably isn't sunk and might not even be mission-killed but it is _definitely_ budget-killed and that's most of what they care about.
