Bronco's one of my favorites! The "pre-A 10!" Listening to the game plane for this mission... Our boys are in trouble! Who will yell at Cap, for all the friendlies he gets!? lol No... The engines are the same. It's the reduction gear boxes, that control rotation of the props. You can get more speed, if you adjust your props in level flight. You still have the props set for takeoff! Giving the propeller blades more or less pitch, allows them to add or remove speed. without adjusting the throttle. "Most, but not all," propeller driven aircraft, since pre-WWII, have had "Constant speed propellers." Meaning that you can adjust the angle of attack, for the propeller blades, not just use the throttle. I don't know about these DCS mods, but in most simulations, you can find the technical charts that show you the best speed and best fuel economy, by adjusting the throttle and propeller pitch.

This mission is optimum for an AH-1Z Cobra or Longbow. As I remember the Broncos firing on impact areas in Camp Pendleton, CA, their attack angles were acute, and as you pointed out, they set up miles away from the target. It looked like some of your attack angles were too flat, which limited the amount of bursts on the targets; and you ate a couple of buildings.

I first encountered the OV-10 Bronco pulling guard duty in the approach area at Eielson AFB in Alaska while serving in the Army. Encountered it a second time as a mod for Operation Flashpoint: Resistance where I found that I could dump so much ordnance in a single strafing run while throttled down. Only learned recently that it could carry paratroopers.
@Istandby6662 жыл бұрын
My biological father designed the A.T.O.P. (Advanced Technology Observation Platform) to replace the Bronco. The ATOP is a forward swept wing design with twin booms and a contra rotating prop. It was armed with 2 sidewinder's on the wing tips and 3 Phoenix missiles on each pylon under each wing. It was accidentally thought to be a Northrop Black Project. I found the ATOP in a book of Northrop Black Project patches. They described the ATOP as a Star Trek enemy ship....lol They thought it had clocking abilities. Nice.... it's still on Google. They even show the model we built hanging off the wing of our Cessna 150. I want to build an rc of the ATOP.
@tonyroberts48072 жыл бұрын
I bet if you did this again without all the extra weight you'd preform much better. Ditch the sidewinders, the paratrooper, and only take a single pod of smoke rockets(if available) to mark the baddies more accurately. Otherwise, great video, love the bronco. Another challenge to try is landing them on the LHD. If I remember correctly, they could actually be operated from them and due to their great STOL performance didn't require arresting gear and could get airborne within the length of the fight deck.

I love the OV-10 Bronco. I read that the Marines were performing exercises, they tried to lock on to it with even the latest Stingers, they couldn't because of the prop wash.
@terryboyer13422 жыл бұрын
American Andrew Dutton I love the Bronc too. But I strongly question the idea they can't be "locked on" by Stingers or other IR missiles. MANPADS have locked on to Cessnas, drones and other piston engine aircraft which are smaller in IR signature and have prop wash. AC-130s are very vulnerable to IR SAMs and they are turbo prop powered like the Bronc. Also helicopters have huge rotor wash yet are vulnerable. Lastly an OV-10 was shot down by an Iraqi SAM in the first Gulf War. By an IR MANPAD I believe.
@TheWhoamaters2 жыл бұрын
@@terryboyer1342 some helis do use their prop wash to disperse the heat signature, but without the system being used they are still quite vulnerable true

Outside my area of expertise but I thought modern MANPADs were sensitive enough to detect the differential temperature between air and fuselage, hence there all-aspect status today. It has selectable fire rates of either 700 rpm or 1,500 rpm. They could have also made the Mk 4 Mod 0 Gun pod available. This pod is fitted with the MK11 Mod 5 20 mm cannon, along with 750 rounds of ammunition. Those were MH-60s.. The differences are worth mentioning. Same as the 160th Chinooks are MH-47s. btw, I knew a lot of the guys at VMO-2 out of MCAS Camp Pendleton that flew the OV-10D, the up-engined and upgraded Bronco. It was an EXCELLENT FAC platform. You can also go look up the huge issue that spawned as as result of the shootdown of the CO and a CW3 (at the time) during GW1: LtCol Cliff Acree and CWO Guy Hunter. They were taken POW, but the shit-show of the shootdown was the CO took more than the number of days "ciphers" he was supposed to. Because those comms ciphers would have resulted in anyone that had access to them being able to listen in on secure communications, a worldwide emergency destruction message was sent out and everyone, EVERYONE had to destroy 30 days of ciphers and re-key every bit of secure comm kit they had - from STU-III SECTELs to PRC aviation radios to HF/UHF/VHF tactical radios for air to air, air to ground, ground to ground, and even ship to shore/ship to ship comms were re-keyed within a day. I can not impress upon you fine folks what an undertaking this was at that time - the automation did not exist as it does today to do these things and there were several generations of comms gear (some of which was even from Vietnam ere tech) in circulation. Huge huge deal. The two USMC Aviation POWs were eventually released, but they not only sustained injuries on ejection they were also beaten up pretty badly. You can see CWO Hunter's eyes were both Racoon'd black and blue. From what I see this is an excellent module, and it brings back the memories of the way those things sounded, flew, and brought the aviation assets in the AO to bear on enemy positions. btw, the reason the thing is not "fast" despite the large amount of torque/power, is because of that big hershey bar wing. It made it an EXCELLENT short-field asset (it IS VSTOL after all) but inhibited its speed potential as a result. The D model btw could carry more than one paratrooper, I do not recall how many but I have seen and remember myself seeing at least 4 Marine paratroopers coming out of the back of them at Pendleton. They would climb up, about 50* AOA, and the guys would gently tumble out while it basically hung on the props. The guys that jumped said it was a GREAT plane to jump from, if you can fit in the back.

Now all we need is the F-4 to get some good prairie fire missions. But in the meantime, I recall in TG2 Maverick said the hornet was "tailor made" for the strike on the uranium enrichment plant. Personally, I believe the aircraft best suited to the mission would have made the movie an Iron Eagle sequel. What would've done the mission better- the F-16 or F-18?
@doemacmonkey2 жыл бұрын
Well…..the F16 would have done a poor job from a carrier, but that’s not your question - personally I think an F35 would have done a better job but the line in the movie about the GPS lock was included because they wanted to film the actors in the actual planes, and there are no 2 seater F35s. Of course in the real world, they would not have sent 4 planes for a high value target like that, they would have sent a multi lobed attack including suppression, jamming, etc and swamped the target and airfield together.
